Chapter 8 - The brewing crisis

Zack leaned on his desk with a absent minded expression.

He was currently thinking about the genetic enhancement process that was about to be implored on every civilian who was less than thirty five years.

Most people would be thrilled upon having this fortunate opportunity of genetic enhancement, but Zack was not like that.

People like Zack, who had a decent level of intelligence knew all well how dreadful this experiment was.

The genetic enhancement process was a detrimental experiment, one that was accompanied by various problematic consequences.

From the documental records of genetic enhancement it was said that, to be able to survive the experiment one had to have at least have the following requirements.

The participant should have compactible genes with the target of enhancement and also have a higher physique higher than the average human physique. The participant also had to have a strong health system, an unshakable will and a very strong mind. Even so, even if the participant met all the recruitments, the chance that they would survive the process was still very low emerging as only forty three percent success rate.

So it was safe to say that this process was no fortunate encounter, instead it was nothing but a suicidal experiment.

Thinking about the irreversible consequences of the genetic enhancement process, Zack couldn't help but shiver against the terrifying possibility.

To make matters worse, his intuition was aligning with these grim possibilities.

According to what Zack knew there were three possible consequences that could unfold if one appeared to be incompatible with the enhancement process.

The first and most likely possibility was certain death of the participant, which was most likely to happen to those who didnt meet the requirements of the enhancement process.

The second possibility was that the participant would have his brains fried out, degrading him to a unresponsive and vegetarian state.

The third possibility was loss of control, where the participant would loose all trace of intelligence, turning into nothing but a savage human with animalistic urges.

The cold indifferent voice of lieutenant Hugo woke Zack from his dazed state.

"Since you all don't have questions regarding the experiment, l will now explain the corresponding procedure of the experiment.

First procedure ;you all will be grouped into different groups, grouped in alphabetical letters A,B,C,D...to Z.

Each letter will represent a hospital or a research facility where the genetic enhancement would take place.

Second procedure ;Due to the reason that the entire world is experiencing the same experiment, the genetic enhancement process will not be held on just one day but instead will be taking place for a full span of seven days.

This means that all the letter groups of each corresponding local center will be given a single number that ranges from one to five thousand.

Third procedures : Each day of the corresponding seven days, the hospital will take a span of five letter groups with a number that ranges from one to two thousand five hundred.

Fourth procedure; Those who survive the process, will immediately begin their survival class at the military academies, that have been placed by the Union army. Again this procedure is also mandatory for everyone.

That's it is all, thank you and l wish you all good luck in surviving the experiment.

After saying those words the lieutenant soldier did not waste any time, he then left the study room, leaving behind the two artificial soldiers and the instructor.

The middle aged instructor, then began to call out the students and their group letters and number.

Zack apparently was called out in group W, with a sub number of 55 which meant that his experiment would be held at the end of the week probably on the last day.

Leon coincidentally was also called on the same group W with the same sub number of 55.

Zack couldn't tell if this was a coincidence or if this was done on purpose, after all he knew too little of the young boy's awakened power.

Speaking of the young awakened, he shouldn't have been experiencing the genetic enhancement process, after all Lieutenant Hugo clearly stated that there was no need for awakened and those who had already survived the genetic enhancement process to proceed in the experiment.

Pondering over this Zack could not help but feel that there was a possibility that the young awakened was planning something by actively joining this suicidal experiment. Ofcourse it could also had be that the brown haired boy was one of those people, who were greedy for power and took unnecessary risk in pursuing it.

Even though his intuition was not aligning with latter possibility, Zack knew that this ability of his was not really powerful, so he chose to be a bit skeptiful about the matter.

'What are the odds that he is scheming something?

Looking at the brown heaired boy, with his messy disheveled brown hair and a dubious face, he didn't look like someone who could be a schemer.

'They are probably low'

After about four hours of listening to the combat instructor calling out names for the letter groups, the scholars were later dismissed. The instructor told them which alphabetical letters represented which hospital or research facility and which numbers represented which day.

Zack's letter represented a physiological research facility center located not so far away from his home.

Once he was told which place he was going, the young spectacled boy silently left the school in the hopes of not attracting the attention of his newly persistant awakened friend.

Once he was outside the academy he took a taxi and went home.

The ride to home was filled with silence, the driver seemed to be a a quiet person, which were the kind of drivers Zack liked.

Within a few minutes he arrived at his destination.

He retrieved a few notes from his pockets and paid up the driver and just before he stepped outside of the car, the quiet driver who had remained impassive the whole journey finally said something, startling Zack in the process.

"Becareful of the Steinfields and don't trust the government"

After saying those words, the driver then pressed on the gas pedal and the car sped up leaving the young boy with dumbfounded expression.

But just before the car had left the, Zack was able to fully see the man's face which was all too familiar to him.

The driver was none other than his own father, the genius scientist who had been reported as missing and was currently part of why the world was in turmoil.

At this point of time, in the middle of the ocean, there was a small island that was covered in a thin veil of dark fog.

On the island there was a large building that stood on top of a small cliff near the east shore of the island.

Inside the building facility, in a grand and spacious hall, a spacial crack could be seen appearing out of nowhere.

Inside the spatial crack there was a billowing darkness of unfathomable origin.

Suddenly at this moment, from the billowing darkness a young boy of average height and size suddenly emerged from the other side with some difficult.

The young boy was a teenage kid with brown disheveled hair and dull looking brown eyes.

He was dressed in a cheap tunic of dark color.

Once the boy was inside the grand hall, the dark spatial crack behind him, suddenly closed off, disappearing completely.

Leon moved towards a long table that was situated on the center point of the room.

On the table there were twelve sitted figures whose facial features were cloaked by the darkness of the room.

Once he was near the table, the brown haired boy kneeled down on the ground with one knee and began to speak.

"Agent number 11 reporting for duty.

l have successfully infiltrated the academy without raising the government's attention. l have also succeeded in making contact with the our targeted figure, Zack Mason.

My relationship with the target is still shallow but it has room for progress and l believe in due time I will succeed.

As from what I have observed the figure is still unaware of his importance and his involvement in the grand scheme of things and only seem to possess shallow knowledge of his connection with the Anomaly.

From what I have speculated the World United Governments has yet to make any move towards the target but have already begun with the procedure in controlling him.

There are also other forces at play, but l did manage to discover their identities"

After the boy was done speaking, a calm majestic voice resounded from the sitted figures,

"Sigh, l see so thats how it is. Well done Alex, you may go back now"

The young did not waste time in responding and acting.

"Yes father".

With those words the boy stepped back, and behind him the earlier spatial crack from before reformed once again, in which he entered and suddenly vanished.

Once he was gone the calm majestic voice resounded once again from the twelve sitted figures.

"Sigh. It seems that, Marlin has already made his move"

From the table another voice then echoed inside the spacious hall. The voice was deep and wise seemingly belonging to a old man.

"Yah so it seems. And as for the other forces that your son couldn't discover, they probably the institute and maybe that group"

The majestic voice boomed once again inside the room.

"If its truly that group, the situation might be more grim than we thought it was"

Another voice sounded from one of the sitted figures, this time, the voice was that of a female.

The soft elegant voice sounded among the grouped figures with confidence.

"Yah, so this means we have to act fast. No matter what we can't let the cursed child fall into the insidious clutches of those factions"
