People say that life is fair to everyone, that everyone has an equal chance in life to succeed. Some take this as their life's motto, deciding to give it their all to succeed. Others decide to dismiss this statement, believing that their life had already been decided at the start.
I on the other hand believe that life is unfair, that everyone starts out with a different hand of cards, some being more advantageous than others.
Some are born with one arm; others are born blind. Some are born into wealth, others into poverty.
But that does not mean there is no opportunity to succeed with a bad hand.
Albeit rare, there have been cases in which the disadvantaged have managed to come out victorious.
Due to that, a group of people believing in the prospect of such success story have formed, being called 'the dreamers'
I am one of such people they call a 'dreamer', someone who wishes for the unreachable.
A fool.
"H-hello, my name is Rover"
As those words left my mouth, my body froze up at the stares I received from the others. Instead of the happy sugary dose of sweetness portrayed in the novels of a regular high school life shown through rosy tinted glasses, it is no different from the other years. In the end, it isn't for me.
In the year 2050, Humanity had advanced in many ways, one of the new aspects of life achieved was the development of virtual reality, having developed to the point to which many things can be simulated in the mind through the touch of a button.
This invention sparked many new ways of entertainment, one of them being the addition of the Simulacrum Battlefield, shortened to SimuField, a place in which people fight against each other in virtual reality with weapons and abilities with various maps with differing game modes.
These abilities are said to be based on the person's personality, dreams, and capabilities. It is said that there are an unlimited number of unique player accounts. While being similar at the beginning, they change with time due to their individual differences and different developmental paths.
To enter the Virtual World, a 'Gate' is needed. This device which is used to send a signal to the brain allows the brain to establish a connection to the Virtual World through the frequency sent from the device to the brain, being akin to an access code to the Virtual World. This device is worn on the ear for easy utility.
Even with all these new technological advancements, life had not changed much, rather it had developed in the opposite direction. Instead of a world dominated by technology looking like a city out of cyberpunk, reality is more resemblant of a mix of Europe and rural Japan, with its walkable cities and its wide variety of public transportation, while also maintaining the vintage feel of the buildings.
This style of architecture was adopted after the invention of the 'Gate', wanting to keep some of the historic value that would otherwise be lost of the technological advancement, deciding to separate the higher technological aspects within the Virtual World.
As I exit the simulation, I am greeted by the scent of lavender filling the room, a scent said to be able to ease the mind. The room devoid of any decoration had only the necessities needed. Reminded of the past events leading up to this point, I am reminded of the new school year starting in a week. Noticing the beads of sweat slowly making their way down my face, I had decided to take a shower. Having been born into a family with workaholic parents had caused me to be alone most of the time. Spending most of the time scavenging the house for activities to do, causing me to be enchanted by the beauty of books, being drawn into the fantastic worlds of the literary world, becoming isolated from the outside world. From a young age, making friends had been difficult, having moved many times due to my parents' working conditions, making friends had lost their purpose in my eyes, deciding to keep to myself and keeping my head in the books. That thought process had started changing in middle school, during those 3 years, she had bewitched me, captivating my sight, making me unable to stop thinking about her.
Among the many interpretations of romantic relationships, they say that the most important aspect of a partner is their personality, to which I would have to disagree. In the end, first impressions play a bigger role than one expects. If a person comes off as crazy or unapproachable, people tend to stay away from them, causing the chance to get to know them nonexistent.
As such, I do not agree that personality is all that matters in love. Especially when it came to 'her', she was as bright as the first ray of sunshine that you wake up to in the morning. Her voice was akin to a soft feather, caressing your skin every time she talks. She was as beautiful as an angel, light golden hair as smooth as the finest cloth, hazel eyes that stole my heart without knowing it. She was my first love.
To say that I was in love with 'her' would be an insult to every loving married couple out there, as I only ever loved the 'her' within my fantasies. We never truly had known each other past the surface level. Even so, the chains that tightened themselves around my chest every time we spoke was real. She had me in the palm of her hand, playing to every single one of her whims. She was the only one capable of distracting me from the isolated world of books, drawing me away from my prison built of books.
The reality of the situation was severe, she and I were different down to the tiny details, she was beautiful and bright, on the other hand I wasn't particularly interesting nor handsome. She was interested in the SimuField while I was passionate about books. She was a socialite and very well-mannered, while I was clumsy and introverted.
That did not stop me from falling deeper and deeper into the pit known as love. I had even decided to take part in the SimuField, trying to become better for her. As my clumsy attempts to express my love to 'her' failed, my 3 years of middle school had come to an end. Never even getting the change to confess my love to her as my parents informed me that we would be moving to a different country due to their work, ending up in Germany.
After the discovery of the correlation between the SimuField and the physical condition of the human body in 2045, Germany had been one of the pioneers of the implementation of the SimuField into the high school curriculum, creating a dedicated school for cultivating top SimuField players in the country, being ranked as one of the top 5 in the world.
My parents had enrolled me into this school, being closest to our new residence. Owing to the effort I put into the SimuField during my middle school years, I had barely been able to get into this school. Due to the increasing interaction between the Virtual World and Reality, schools cultivating SimuField players had been a countermeasure to any unexpected results of the ever-growing link between the two worlds.
