Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Hidden Pursuit

Wayne gradually realized that his feelings for Hailey had transcended mere colleague friendship. He began to secretly pursue Hailey, hoping to offer more care and warmth to this strong-willed girl. However, Wayne was acutely aware of an invisible barrier between them. Hailey came from a humble background, while he was the CEO of Sangen Corporation, and the gap in their social statuses and backgrounds was vast.

One day, Wayne arranged a team dinner, hoping to give Hailey a chance to relax. The restaurant was a cozy, secluded spot with a warm and laid-back atmosphere, chosen meticulously by Wayne because he knew Hailey preferred such quiet and tasteful environments.

During the dinner, Wayne frequently watched Hailey's every move, filled with admiration for her smiles and gestures. Hailey sensed Wayne's concern but also felt that her feelings for Wayne were becoming increasingly complex. She admired Wayne's strength and wisdom but also felt that they were not from the same world.

After the dinner, Wayne found an opportunity to talk to Hailey alone. They sat on a bench outside the restaurant, the night breeze gently blowing, creating a more intimate atmosphere between them.

"Hailey," Wayne said gently, "working with you over this time, I've come to realize how remarkable you are. It's not just your professional skills but also your strong character and kind heart."

Hailey smiled slightly but with a hint of sadness. "Wayne, thank you for the compliment. But I always feel that we come from different worlds."

Wayne's heart trembled; he knew what Hailey meant but still firmly replied, "Regardless of our backgrounds, we are all individuals. What I admire is your inner self, not your external conditions."

These words deeply moved Hailey, and she softly said, "Thank you, Wayne. I will remember your words."

Meanwhile, at home, Hailey's life was far from smooth. Her parents' expectations and favoritism towards her younger brother made her feel deeply wronged. Her mother always hoped she would give up her dreams to earn money and support the family, while her brother frequently disrespected and teased her.

One night, Hailey worked late at the company and returned home in the dead of night. She tiptoed into her room, not wanting to disturb her family. Just as she was about to rest, her brother John barged in and threw her newly bought books everywhere.

"What are you doing?" Hailey asked angrily.

"What good are these books? Do you think you can change anything by reading?" John sneered.

Hailey felt her anger rising but tried hard to control herself. She knew that arguing with her brother would only bring more pain. Taking a deep breath, she held back her tears and silently picked up the books, placing them back in order.

The next day after work, Hailey wearily entered the house, only to be greeted by her mother's scolding. John hid behind their mother, making faces at Hailey, and she realized he had tattled on her again.

"You are the elder sister; you should speak and act with maturity. How can you still be so childish?" her mother shouted angrily, pointing at her nose. "Girls don't need to study so much. The family finances are tight; you should go out and work to help the family!"

"Mom, why do you always treat me this way?" Hailey couldn't help but ask. "I have my own dreams and want to pursue my own future. Why do you always make me give up?"

Her mother's response was cold, "The family needs money. As the elder sister, you should know to take care of the family. Your brother is still young and needs more care."

Hailey felt as if a knife had been stabbed into her heart. She felt that her efforts and dreams were worthless in this family. Fighting back her tears, she returned to her room, filled with grievances and helplessness.

That night, Hailey lay in bed, silent tears streaming down her face. She thought of Wayne and his care and support, which made her feel slightly better. But she knew she had to be strong and persist, no matter how difficult the road ahead, to have a chance to escape this life.

The next day, Wayne noticed Hailey's weary expression in the office and asked with concern, "Hailey, are you okay? You look very tired."

Hailey forced a smile, "It's nothing, just some family issues."

Wayne was silent for a moment and then gently said, "If there's anything I can do to help, please tell me. You don't have to bear so much pressure alone."

Hailey nodded, feeling a warm sensation in her heart. She knew that no matter how unfair her family was, at least Wayne was there to support her.

At that moment, Hailey's good friend Eva approached. Eva, a close friend from college currently interning at Sangen Corporation, had always been there to support Hailey mentally. Sensing the atmosphere between them, Eva smiled and greeted, "Hi Wayne, hi Hailey, what are you talking about?"

Hailey looked up at Eva, a relaxed smile on her face, "Just talking about some work stuff."

Eva nodded, glanced at Wayne, and then said to Hailey, "Are you free tonight? Let's grab a coffee. I have something to talk to you about."

Knowing Eva wanted to help her relax, Hailey agreed, "Sure, see you tonight."

Wayne watched them, feeling a bit reluctant but understanding that Hailey needed her friend's support and company. He smiled and said, "You two go ahead. Let me know if you need anything."

That evening, Hailey and Eva sat in a café, and Hailey shared her recent troubles with Eva. Eva listened quietly and then comforted her, "Hailey, you are really strong. No matter what difficulties you encounter, I will be here to support you. Also, I can see that Wayne really cares about you."

Hailey whispered, "I can feel his concern too, but the gap between us is too big. I don't know how to face it."

Eva held her hand and said gently, "True love transcends backgrounds. If Wayne truly loves you, he will understand and support everything about you. You must believe in yourself and bravely pursue your happiness."

Hailey looked at Eva with gratitude, feeling her mood lighten. She knew that with friends and Wayne's support, she could persevere through any hardships.

As time passed, Wayne's pursuit of Hailey became more evident. He offered her more guidance at work, took her to relaxing places during breaks, and encouraged and supported her whenever she felt down. Gradually, Hailey opened her heart and began to accept Wayne's care and affection.
