Chereads / My Unrestrained Lives / Chapter 9 - At The Supermarket

Chapter 9 - At The Supermarket

After resting for a bit, I searched the corpse of the giant zombie but found nothing similar to the crystal from the cat. Disappointed, I continued toward the supermarket.

Entering it, I found a considerable part of the shelves was emptied out. Not minding it, I continued inside to see a surprising scene. Finding two grown-up men crouching down at the corner, and not finding it a pleasant sight, I asked.

"What are you doing?" Looking at them stuttering trying to answer, it suddenly came to my mind.

"Wait, were you trying to hide? Like really?" Seeing how silent they became, I was rendered speechless. Like, why are they trying to hide in the first place?

Scrutinizing them from top to bottom again, and noticing their tattoos, the hair and clothing styles they have, I was bewildered again. No matter how much I think about it, they seem to belong to some kind of gang. So why are these rude and arrogant people cowering like this?

"Is it because they saw me killing the zombies outside?" wondering to myself but finding the situation not matching, I asked myself again, "Do they think that I'm some kind of psychopath who would kill anyone he comes across? Me, the perfect good-natured citizen?" While trying to find some answers to my curiosity and seeing them standing up but still trembling, I felt the situation was helpless.

Not being able to be bothered anymore, I ignored them and went the other way inside to find another surprising scene: a woman, maybe in her early thirties, laying down motionless, her still-opened eyes lost of light. With torn and disheveled clothes, bruises deforming her once pale skin, and tangled hair. The fresh wound on her chest still gushing out blood, telling how she must have just died, and her lifeless body and torn-away nails telling of her last struggle against the assault.

"Am I not destined to be able to save those damsels in distress?" Even after seeing this horrific scene, that's all I could say. I wouldn't say that I didn't feel anything, but with the world as it is now, these kinds of situations will be common. So should I help every wronged soul out there? Every time I come across something like this, would I be needed to help, to extend my hand to them? It's not like I'm some hero or justice defender.

But after looking at the corpse more and feeling like shit, I couldn't hold it anymore and went to the likely culprits. Seeing them going silently toward the entrance and most likely trying to escape.

"Haaa." Sighing, I put my spear to the side and ran a little. Catching them and holding one with each hand, I threw them at the wall and stared at them silently, hesitating and not knowing what I should do.

"Ugh." Standing up while groaning, one of them, seeing me just staring at them and not doing anything, summoned the courage and started speaking.

"Actually, she just died, so her corpse is still warm. If you want, you can still, you know, d-o it." But maybe seeing my stare turn more dangerous, he stuttered and said more.

"We had not done anything to her yet, don't worry." Trying to study my face, he continued.

"Actually, she was helpless at first and gave up struggling, but seeing yourself… I mean your esteemed self, maybe she thought she could get help from you. Not knowing her place."

"Because of her aggressive struggle, we ended up killing her by mistake."

"What a pity."

Hearing what he said, the supposed excuses, I was flabbergasted. How the fuck did he think I wouldn't do anything after all he said? Even my heart, which I thought wouldn't move, turned cold, seething with rage and disgust.

"It's a pity indeed, but nevertheless thank you," as I said, I continued. "I'm just curious, did you not think I would turn more enraged because of what you said?" With the most neutral tone, I couldn't help but ask.

And hearing the question, the taller one who said the excuses had his pale face from fear turn even whiter.

"We are not kids anymore, you know. And things like justice and law will not work in this changed world anyway. Everyone is out for themselves." Coming to save his friend and trying to amend the situation, the short one spoke.

"Actually, I was not going to get myself involved. Like you said, it's every man for himself."

"But you made me change my mind."

"I will not go out of my way to punish or help anyone, but if I see some trash along the way, it's not bad to dispose of it." while coldly saying so, I started walking toward them slowly.

"Are you sure of what you are doing? Our boss is a lot stronger than you think. If he knows that you killed one of his men, he won't let you go."

Seeing me nearing and how his cliché threat didn't change anything, he made his resolve, "Fuck, let's come at him together. After his battle with all those zombies, he can't not be exhausted,"

he shouted as he ran toward me and punched out. But holding his hand easily, I stared at him coldly and then started my barrage of punches.

Seeing his face getting deformed and the blood coming from his head and splashing on my hand, I was strangely satisfied. But seeing his friend trying to escape, I threw him down and went to the taller one.

"With the difference in agility between us, it's impossible to run from me." Saying so, I started punching him, feeling my stress lessening with each punch. After feeling enough of it, I took a knife from my waist and stabbed him.

"You, ugh, will regr-rt it." Seeing him glaring at me with his deformed widened eye while saying, I smiled at him and continued my stabs. Finishing him.

Seeing his level and feeling the tiny amount of soul power I was getting, I was nearly disappointed. Like, how could he come here with this level?

"Well, even a mosquito's meat is still meat."

Getting near to the short one again and seeing how he still can't get off from the ground, I wanted to end the mess, but he suddenly said, "Do you think of yourself any different? That you will not become like us?" Hearing his mocking question, I didn't bother answering but stabbed his heart with my knife instead.
