Chapter 10 - Gates Descending

Stabbing his knife into the remaining man's heart and seeing him cough blood, then watching as the light in his eyes slowly faded, was strangely comforting.

Seeing the system messages but not feeling satisfied enough, Ellis started to stab the corpse again.

"Bang" Hearing the sound of the gunshot but not being able to react quickly, Ellis suddenly found himself reclining backward a little, the knife dropping from his hand, then he started feeling the pain in his arm.

"Stop what you are doing immediately, and raise your hands." Hearing this and without having the time to assess the situation, Ellis turned his head toward the direction of the voice. Seeing a man with a huge body wearing a police uniform, he was a little surprised.

"Get away from the corpse, and raise your hands immediately. The next shot will not just be at your arm." Hearing him start to shout again, and registering what the likely policeman said exactly, "If you know you shot me in my arm, how the fuck should I be able to raise both of them exactly?" While cursing in his mind, Ellis started to move away from the corpse, turning his mind on and thinking about what he should do and how he should solve this situation.

"They were the ones who tried to rape my female companion and then killed her, it was self-defense." Seeing how he asked him to move away from the corpse, Ellis lied without batting an eye, feeling like this kind of emotional argument could help. Noticing how the policeman turned silent, and keeping an eye on him, he turned his attention to the wound on his arm. Seeing how the bone was not harmed and the bullet had gone out the other side, he was thankful for his baggy clothes for the first time. Then noticing how there was a lot less blood than there should be and thinking of the vitality attribute in the system, he hurriedly opened the system window and put 20 points on vitality, feeling the difference immediately.

"Even then, there are laws, and you didn't need to kill them. So this is not self-defense; this is just murder."

"What the fuck is he saying?" Thinking to himself and being ready to face him, Ellis decided to drop the act.

"So, what will you do? Try to kill me? In the first place, who do you think you are to judge and impose your opinion on others in this fucked up world?"

"I'm just enforcing the law in place of the government, so what you said doesn't matter. I'm doing what is right, helping society by eliminating evil ones like yourself." Hearing his reply and how he was justifying himself by hiding under some righteous cause, Ellis felt disgusted. But seeing him wanting to shoot with his pistol again, Ellis hurriedly jumped toward the corpse, nearly dodging another bullet.

Holding the corpse in front of him to cover himself from another bullet, then picking up the knife on the ground, he waited for the policeman to stop shooting. Then making sure of his location exactly, he threw his knife. Seeing him try to dodge, Ellis started to run toward him while taking the other knife from under his t-shirt. Throwing the other knife and forcing him to dodge again, he finally arrived in front of him, punching with his injured arm toward his face, and then extending his other hand to hold his arm tightly. Punching him a couple of times and then taking the pistol from him, he put it to his arm and pulled the trigger. Seeing him shout in pain with his bloodied face, Ellis started to ask himself, after awakening, why he hadn't met any normal person?

"It feels like I'm taking myself from one fucked up situation and putting myself in another."

"Have I been cursed? Is my luck not increasing? Why don't I feel its effect?"

Thinking to himself and trying to take some of his anger out on this stupid policeman, he punched him a little in the face, then threw him to the ground and started kicking him, taking some pleasure in his howling.

Seeing him drop dead and still feeling some pain from his injured arm, he first went to find a first-aid kit. But not finding any, Ellis went with the second choice, tearing some clothes, putting some alcohol on them and then on the injury to clean it a little even while enduring the pain. He bandaged his shoulder, feeling that this was enough.

Ellis quickly searched the corpses and then put some canned food and biscuits in his backpack, wanting to return home as soon as possible.

Finally entering his house, he felt some relief. Thankfully there were just some lonely zombies on the way back, so it was a smooth return.

Throwing himself on the sofa and closing his eyes to rest a little, he found himself drifting asleep.

Opening his eyes and shocked that he had slept, he first looked around his surroundings. Not finding anything out of place and checking the watch to notice how it had been just an hour, he was relieved.

Taking his backpack and checking the spoils of this fight, after all he went through, the pistol with 10 remaining bullets and a hunting knife from one of the gangsters, there was nothing of note other than these two things.

Feeling a bit disappointed and thinking of what happened during this trip, Ellis was unsure of what he should do going forward. Taking a look at his injured arm, and finding the wound had closed and started healing, gave him some comfort.

Taking some canned foods and biscuits to fill his stomach, he remembered the gatherings of people his mother talked about, so while eating he started to browse the internet, searching for those gatherings. But finding articles with titles like (Apocalypse Rising), (The Beginning of the End), and (Facing Challenges Hand in Hand), he felt something was wrong and actually lost interest and just continued his meal.

Finishing his meal, and while staring at the wall of the room, thinking maybe he should continue hunting zombies, a gray light suddenly came, starting faint and becoming brighter. It started from a point, then became bigger slowly and changed to a ring, glowing brightly. He was forced to close his eyes, even then feeling its blinding light. Ellis was forced to cover his face with his arm and turn to the other direction.

Finally feeling the blinding light fade, he took his arm away and turned his head. Staring at the huge gray ring glowing, he couldn't think of anything else but gates.
