It was morning when Bia awoke to the sound of medical machines, she could hear the loud buzzing of the hospital lights throughout the room. She could feel bandages around the upper part of her leg, the girl let out a low groan as she fought to open her eyes. "Bia? I think she's waking up!" Bia heard a woman's voice that sounded identical to her mother. Her parents noticed she was slowly trying to move her hands and Mr Wilson ran to go get the nurse.
"Oh thank the lord! Are you okay? How are you feeling?" Bia almost let out a laugh, she barely opened her eyes and her mother was already asking her questions. She opened her mouth to respond but quickly closed it as she realized how dry her throat was, her mother rushed to pass her daughter some water she had gotten earlier. It was room temperature now but it would still get the job done.
Bia took the short amount of time it took for her mother to bring the water back to look at the hospital room she was in, the plain design and decor not comforting her in any way she glanced at the beeping machines and medical supplies around her. "Here baby, drink this" She took the cup gratefully and gulped down the cup of water in mere seconds, Bia sat the empty cup down before turning towards her mother again. "I feel okay, nothing hurts.." She said as she quickly took notice of the lack of pain she was in, she thought it was just the medicine working.
"That's so good! The doctor said you barely needed any medicine" Her mother cooed at her as she rubbed her head lovingly with relief hanging heavy on her voice. Bia's head tilted in confusion, "Why not?" She thought with as much pain she remembers being in they would've at least given her some medicine. However, Latrice just shrugged and she looked anywhere but into Bia's eyes. "The doctors said you didn't need any-'' But before her daughter could even respond to likely ask another question Latrice changed the subject.
"Yemmi's fine too, the doctors told us she woke up a couple hours ago.." The adult mumbled sheepishly. Bia sighed in relief, she was thankful her friend was alright. She wondered if the same thing happened to her, a doctor suddenly came into the room with her father following behind him. She squinted her eyes to see his name tag, "Hi, nice to see you finally awake Bia" Dr. Carter said with a pleasant smile on his face. The young girl sent a small smile back as he came closer to check her vitals on the monitor, "I just wanted to check to see if everything was alright" He said firmly as he typed one last thing on a keyboard and faced his patient.
A few silent minutes went by of him checking her vitals and giving her a basic check up before he finally said something else to Wilson family. "Good news! Everything looks good, keep the bandages clean and change it as you need to. A nurse will be in here shortly with some supplies and your discharge papers. Have a nice day now.." Dr. Carter said quickly, Bia was convinced it was all in one breath but didn't get to decipher that as the doctor made his rather quick exit.
The doctor's words faded as the door shut behind him. Bia felt a wave of relief wash over her. She took a deep breath and sighed, even though she was going to be alright. She couldn't help that underlying slight feeling of uneasiness She took a deep breath and tried to relax. She reminded herself that the doctor had said she was going to be alright, and that she needed to focus on that. She closed her eyes and tried to ignore the feeling.
It was mid afternoon when the Wilson family finally arrived home and settled down for the day, Yemmi came over to spend the night since her parents had to leave for work. The girls took notice of their parents acting strange, they haven't talked about what happened since they've left the hospital. Every time one of the girls tried to bring it up, one of the adults quickly changed the subject. But after a long semi-awkward dinner and movie night in efforts to cheer the girls up, they decided to just go to bed and start fresh in the morning.
So there they were, lying side by side in Bia's bed staring up at the ceiling as their mind raced with a million things. "Bia?" Yemmi's voice broke her out of her thoughts. "Yeah?" She felt Yemmi turn to face her, "Can I see?" Bia turned her head slightly, their eyes met briefly before Bia turned her head back at the ceiling. "Only if I can see yours.."
And with that both girls got up out of the bed and into the bathroom connected to Bia's bedroom. "Okay you first" Yemmi said excitedly, silently clapping her hands as she waited for Bia to show her. Shrugging she got ready to pull her pants down, her fingers tugging at her waist band before Yemmi grabbed her wrist. "Um what the hell are you doing-" Bia scoffed and pulled herself from Yemmi's grip as she tugged at her waist band once more, "Its my leg, I'm not finna flash you dumb-ass" She rolled her eyes as she tugged her pants down, her boxer shorts covering her enough.
Yemmi could see the bandages wrapped around Bia's thigh, it was a few inches under her hip but it stopped a little higher than just above her knee. She thought it looked fairly clean, it wasn't any blood seeping through. Not bothering to wait for Bia to tell her, Yemmi lifted up her shirt a bit. Her stomach was wrapped in bandages, the soft white material was covering most of her mid body. Bia looked at the bandages, something her mom said to her came to mind. "Did you need any medicine?" Yemmi looked a bit caught off guard by the question but she answered nonetheless. "No … .did you?" Bia's eyebrows furrowed before shaking her head. "What if we take them off?" Yemmi questioned out loud, her hand hovering over where the start of her bandages were. "Eh" Bia shrugged before unwrapping her bandages, it was no longer bleeding but it was deep and..it looked like a bite mark.
"What the actual fuck" Bia whispered with a ridiculous look on her face. She looked up to Yemmi in shock before looking back down at her leg, "Some psycho bite me?!" She said a little loudly before Yemmi shushed her, saying they didn't want to wake Bia's parents. Bia sighed but agreed before motioning to Yemmi's bandage while she wrapped hers, wanting to see hers as well. Yemmi took a deep breath before unwrapping her bandages, and it looked exactly like Bia's. "I hope we don't get rabies" Yemmi mumbled disappointingly as she wrapped her wound back.
Bia was incredibly disturbed and confused, she didn't know why anything would try to bite her but then she suddenly remembered the figure she saw, the one with the glowing red eyes. She didn't know whether or not she could tell Yemmi without her best friend thinking she's crazy, and Yemmi could tell Bia was thinking about something that troubled her. "Spit it out-" Bia looked up just to lock eyes with Yemmi before looking away to the floor, "What-"
"Don't give me that, just spit it out" Yemmi scoffed at her friend before crossing her arms and leaning on the bathroom sink waiting for her to spill whatever was bothering her. Bia sighed before taking a seat on the edge of the bathtub, "The thing I saw watching me…I saw its eyes.." She started, Yemmi shrugged softly before tilting her head at Bia. "They were red.."
Yemmi thought about it, took a few seconds of silence and went into deep thought while staring at the wall in front of her. She let out a short hum before she rubbed a hand over her face and made eye contact with Bia once more. "Are sure it wasn't like contacts or something girl?" Bia shook her head, it was no way the thing she saw was just a person with contacts. Plus the only reason she was able to tell what color they were despite the darkness was because,
"They were glowing.."
