It was the morning after when Bia shoved some of her textbooks into her locker, exchanging those for snacks as she also tossed a notebook and hopefully something to write with in her bag. She slammed her locker shut as the bell rang. Yemmi suddenly appeared behind it, leaned up against the lockers with her arms crossed. "So..my parents are acting like nothing happened, like every time I bring it up they just change the subject" Bia rolls her eyes as she props her book bag on her shoulder and leans on her locker, copying Yemmi's pose. "I told you going to them wasn't going to solve anything" Bia replied as she tilted her head at her best friend.
The older girl just sighed and rested her head on the lockers. "Well what are we going to do?" They're parents have been acting weird ever since that night, and neither Bia or Yemmi could get information about what happened to them. Bia shrugged as she leaned off the locker, "Nothing to do I guess, just continue life as normal.." Patting her friend on the shoulder before passing her to go to her next class.
The girls continued their day as normal, going to classes, completing assignments. Everything was going fine, even the girls for a split second forgot about what happened that night. Finally the bell for lunch rang and kids began to quickly pile into the hallways and make their way to the cafeteria.
Bia sat at their usual lunch table and waited for her friend to show up, she got there faster than her most of the time because she actually didn't mind shoving slow walkers out of the way- nevertheless as she waited she pulled out her Chromebook and began working on an assignment from the previous class she was just in. "Okay so apparently we're getting a new kid-" Yemmi said as she took a seat, Bia looked at her sideways before going back to her assignment. "During lunch? Talk about big back-'' she felt Yemmi's elbow collide with her arm before she could finish her sentence.
"Bia Jhene James- Be nice! My lord-" Yemmi sighed before shaking her head, she just shrugged sheepishly and looked around " Do you know when?" Bia asked, leaning back in her chair, but before Yemmi could answer- suddenly there was a potent wave of lavender that flooded Bia's nostrils, along with smells of soft rain and olden days book paper. She quickly shot up in her chair, the rush of scents combined giving her an overwhelming feeling-having forgotten much about her assignment, Bia gave her a forced smile. Her eyes quickly moving from Yemmi's to around the cafeteria, her fists were clenching her ripped jeans.
She looked quite uneasy.
"Um..Are you okay?" Yemmi noticed how uncomfortable her friend looked, Bia just shook her head and tried to take a deep breath to calm her nerves. "Did someone spray some perfume or something?" Yemmi shook her head a bit confused. She didn't think so but how could she know? "I mean, i don't know..maybe?" She shrugged, Bia let out a small breath, closed her eyes and rubbed her nose. Yemmi softly put a hand on her back, "What's wrong? Is it your allergies?" Bia felt Yemmi's hand leave her and no later heard her hand digging through her purse for her medicine she usually took for it.
She could hear the loud rattling of her keys, her earbuds, the extra napkins she always kept on her, the rustle of a pad and tampon, her water bottle, no doubt she heard the few bags of chips she took from her locker, her makeup bag that was probably filled to the brim with products she took from her house. And then the smells of Yemmi's favorite vanilla spray perfume and her cherry lip gloss and then she smelled loud scents of coconut, cocoa butter and cinnamon. She opened her eyes and turned towards Yemmi, the louder the scent was the more it overwhelmed her.
Bia didn't know how she could tell that it was Yemmi but didn't have time to explain, she stood up and grabbed her bag and started speed walking out the lunchroom. As she passed by- person by person, she got more whiffs that overtook her senses. She could feel her stomach twist and turn as if she had to throw up the more people she passed. Yemmi sighed and grabbed her things quickly, "Okay! Wait up!" Yemmi rushed out the lunchroom, her bag hanging from her shoulders as she stumbled a bit trying not to drop her stuff.
She staggered her way out of the lunchroom and, not looking where she was going, accidentally bumped into her. Bia stood at the front of the cafeteria entrance, staring into the main hallway. Yemmi stood at Bia's side, turning her head to witness whatever she was gawking at. "What-" Yemmi begins to say before a girl comes bursting into the main entry doors and stands in the hallway. "Its her" Bia mumbled, her eyebrows scrunched as the overwhelming smells that once flooded her senses now rested at ease with the culprit at sight. Yemmi looked at her friend once more, "her? Who- what the hell are you talking about woman?" She said exasperatedly.
Bia shook her head, "She's the new kid."
Yemmi shook her head, her confusion clear. She pointed at the girl who was standing a few feet away, her black hair pulled back in a messy bun. Yemmi gasped, "That's the new kid?" Bia nodded, her expression unwavering.
The girls sat in library once the principal finally came and took the new girl to what they were assuming to show her around and to get her accustomed to her new schedule. "Okay so what the hell is going on?" Yemmi spoke as they finally got settled. No worries about the next class since they always had a free period after lunch. Bia sighed, "Girl I don't even really know, one minute we were talking and the next- I got this overwhelming rush of smells and I just had to get out of there" She rested her arms on the table before resting her head on top of them. Yemmi stayed silent as she pulled out some of her work materials, her next class being Math and she did not finish her homework from last night.
The first 5 minutes were relatively silent before Bia raised her head up, "It wasn't my allergies." Yemmi locked eyes with her before looking back down at her assignment. "What was it then?" Bia just shook her head and flopped her head back down, "I don't know" She mumbled. She could still smell the scents Yemmi gave off but it calmed down. It wasn't as strong now. "I hope that bite didn't actually give you something-" Bia lifted her head up quickly, her wide eyes already landing onto Yemmi. "And if it did then who's to say it didn't give you anything either?" Yemmi froze, drifting in and out of thought before she looked up at Bia.
A couple minutes later both girls were in the girls bathroom, locked in the same stall with both bandages exposed. They looked at each other nervously before unwrapping them. Both the girls eyes widen in shock, "Yemmi what the fuck-" Bia didn't even finish her sentence before she ripped the rest of bandages from her body. "I-its gone?.." Yemmi mumbled confused, she looked at Bia. "Somethings wrong…." Bia started saying as she began tearing the rest of the bandages off of her best friend. "Or at least something is happening-" she stopped and let out an anxious sigh before throwing them in the small trash that was located in the stall with them.
"Our parents know something Bia-" Yemmi said frustrated, she hadn't experienced anything yet besides this current strange situation and she didn't want to, seeing her best friend act strangely was enough but not knowing what's to come was even more terrifying- especially when people who are supposed to guide you just ends up leaving you in the dark.
"I know!" Bia said as she rubbed a hand through her hair worriedly, before she could get another word out Yemmi placed both hands on her shoulders and looked her in the eyes. "They won't tell us anything-" Bia mumbled sadly from the stress. Her hands came to hold onto Yemmi's arms, "Fuck it" She shrugged, "We'll get the information we seek ourselves then.."
