Chapter 37 - A loose cannon

Two weeks later

The Gotti mansion was the location where I was shot, and I spent a week and a half in the hospital after the incident.

When he was not working on his movie, Melvin was frequently seen sitting beside me in bed.

I was able to regain consciousness after passing out from the bullet wound, and I informed him that he needed to go to work.

His reluctance to enter the room accompanied his desire to phone his manager and inform her that he could not participate in the movie because I was in the hospital.

Flashback

Turning my head to the left, I saw Melvin dozing off on the chair. "Melvin," he said as he opened his eyes and stared at me. "You're awake?"

When I say "Yeah," I extend my hand to him, and he takes it instead. You ought to go back to your house and get some rest. It is the morning when you are out working.

The man gave a head shake. "I can't work knowing that you're in here."

I remove my hand from behind his. "If you don't go to work tomorrow, I will leave you."

"You can't." Next to me, he is seated on the bed there. "I can't live without you. This evening, I believed that I had, and if I do end up losing you, I don't think that I will be able to survive.

I want you to go to work and give the finest performance possible. You are going to be relieved to have something to divert your attention. I kiss his cheek. "You are my love. Because of this, I need you to go to work. This is an opportunity that you will regret for the rest of your life if you do not take advantage of it. This project will determine the course of your professional life.

"Alright, I see... You likely find this is significant.

"Yes, don't forget I'll be by for a photo shoot when I leave the hospital."

Flashback ends

******

I was shot, and my family decided to change the plans for the day; they were going to have dinner with Alanie's boyfriend.

As a result, she was adamant about not inviting me to join the family for dinner.

After we informed our parents that someone had ambushed The Gotti house and that I had been shot, they were not pleased with our news.

Even though Alanie does not want our parents to know that she is marrying into the Mafia, my brothers are eager to find out.

The moment they discovered that I had been shot, they faced Paul and Quinn, and the outcome was not a pleasant one.

In addition to putting The Gotti Brothers in the hospital, they informed them that they might have taken additional precautions to safeguard me.

Quinn informed us that he would increase the level of security at the location and direct more than five individuals to patrol the premises.

During our conversation, he expressed his deepest regret for what had transpired, and I assured him that it was not his fault.

He was adamant about it and said he intended to take more measures to safeguard my family.

We have yet to determine who could gain access to the premises.

According to their conversation over the past two weeks, Melvin and Quinn are aware of the person who committed the crime; however, they do not wish to disclose this information to me.

Lydia is also being silent about the matter.

She seems to be aware of something, but she cannot reveal it to me.

I can't say I blame her for not wanting to undermine her husband's confidence. She is the kind of person who would rather shield her friends from things that could harm them.

Nobody is aware of the fact that being kept in the dark is causing me a great deal of pain.

Before Melvin left the house last night, I installed a tracker and a listening device on his personal and professional phones.

Whenever it comes to Melvin, I will never be in the dark about anything.

Even though you might consider me paranoid, you would understand if you were in my position and had to deal with all of the mysteries surrounding Melvin and my brothers.

As soon as I activate the tracker, I notice that he is again at The Gotti Mansion.

"Melvin, what gives you the right to be there? You assured me that you would return home when you finished your shift.

I overhear Melvin saying something as he turns on the listening device. "Did you catch her?"

"No, she broke away from us. This woman is a difficult one.

There is a loud bang on the table, and I hear it. That she can enter and exit the country with such ease is something that I cannot believe. I have no control over the fact that Michelle is going to kill Katherine; there is nothing I can do about it.

Are you sure Michelle's behind this? It was because of her that I was shot. Has she shot me?

The moment Alanie and Paul enter the room, I feel the color drain from my face. She then turns off the instrument. It is inappropriate for you, Katherine, to be aware of that. "Everyone has been making an effort to safeguard you."

I respond by looking at her. "I can look out for myself." I get to my feet. After firing at me, it would appear that she has once again fled the United States."

How did she know I was at The Gotti's? The fact that she would do something as dumb as shooting at me on the grounds of the Mafia suggests that she may be suicidal. It's also possible that she is unaware that they are members of the Mafia.

Despite her evasiveness with everyone up to this point, I am looking forward to seeing her expression when she finds out that small bit of information.

At some point, she will mess up, and everyone will nail her to the wall before she does so.

I am surrounded by a large number of people who love me, and I am aware that they will all be upset if I were to pass away.

When I finally realize that everyone wants me to survive and that they are only doing this for me to be able to, tears start to gather in my eyes.

Alanie approaches me and hugs me as she does so. "It was best for you to remain in the shadows, Kathy. Is there something you can guarantee to me?

I intend to move over so she can join me on the bed. "Sure,"

You promise me that you will not allow this to ruin your life. Carry out all of your normal activities."

"I'll try, Alanie." I touch her on her tummy. "I want to be there when the baby is born."

And she laughs. "You're already giving my child a nickname."

A grin appears on my face as I look at you. "I am, without a doubt. It would help if you, Alanie, guaranteed something else to me.

"Okay,"

"That even if I pass away, you will not give up on life. Do what you love to give my niece or nephew the best possible upbringing.

"I will." As I get out of bed, she assists me. "We should get ready for dinner at Mom's."

I give Paul a look and then say. "Are you ready to meet the rest of the family?"

His expression is serious. "Not really." I can trust what he has to say. "Your brothers will be hard to win over since things went down at the mansion."

I dismiss him with a wave. "They got Quinn, and you beat up to the point of insanity. That indicates that you are on an equal footing with them. There is no doubt that they will have something to say about the fact that you attacked our little sister.

Alanie lets out a chuckle. "Mom and Dad thought that you would be the one to give them a Grandchild first."

I am aware that they were.

As I make my way to my closet, I search through it. I am looking for something to wear to dinner. I find one as I search for black clothing that can conceal the bandage.

Paul enters the bedroom and excuses himself from there.

After removing the sling from my arm, Alanie helped me put on the dress I had been wearing.

Melvin is going to be late for the dinner that is going to be held at my parents' house.

Something like that is not typical of him.

As a result of Michelle becoming a loose cannon, his time will be spent attempting to locate her, while I will be trying to make it through each day while pretending that I have no problem.
