Chapter 15 - Not OK

"Yeah." After placing the final dish on the rack, I approach Melvin, standing there with his arm out for me. I set my foot on his arm. Then I mutter, "Alanie wants to ask you something."

Melvin gives my sister a look before saying something. "What do you want to ask me?"

She walks over to us and looks around the kitchen before walking away. "I would love to cook dinner for Katherine and you one night," she gushes. "I just love this kitchen."

Melvin develops a grin that stretches across his face. "I love it too." His lips are kissing the crown of my head. "Yes, you are welcome to prepare a meal for us any evening. There will be no one else in the kitchen. If you need assistance, someone will be around to provide it for you.

When she sees Melvin, she rushes over to him and shoves me out of the way. "Thank you," she says as she embraces him. "You're the best future brother-in-law in the world."

Melvin lets out a chuckle. "I try to be." I can see him extending his hand to me. "It is imperative that we stop right away. I would need to find a way to keep Seraphina waiting.

I place my little hand in his, then we proceed to the garage, where he takes the keys to the black Audi R8 I love so much.

In front of me, he is holding the key. "You're driving."

I grab the key from him and position myself in the vehicle's driver's seat. "You're trusting me to drive you around?"

As he nods. Indeed, the paparazzi will be aware of the incident if you are the one who caused it. These individuals have been loitering outside the house ever since your siblings arrived.

Why didn't they tell me about them? I'm curious.

Following the exit of the Audi R8 from the garage, I proceed to drive down the driveway.

Jake is standing at the entrance and flashes a grin upon seeing me. "Katherine, good morning to you".

"I'm good, and you?"

"Same." Melvin receives a nod from him. Mr., good morning to you! I was not able to see you there."

Melvin's face looks bewilderful. Jake, that is not a problem at all. I've seen that you have developed a fondness for my newest visitor.

It is a laugh. "We all prefer this one over the rotten supermodel anyway."

Melvin shakes his head. "I could fire you for that comment, but I can tell if I did, Kathy would have a lot to say about it."

Without a doubt, I would.

The entrances are opened, and "Bye, Jake." My vehicle leaves the driveway.

Some photographers are taking pictures of me as I drive by them.

By looking in the rearview mirror, I can observe a few of them getting into their vehicles and following us through the streets of Los Angeles.

I stop at a red stoplight and notice flashes coming from the cameras.

I am the focus of Melvin's attention. "You can go, you know."

I give a head shake. "I am unable to see quite clearly, Melvin. My eyes have been affected by the flashes coming from the cameras.

"I'll drive then." As Melvin removes his seatbelt and prepares to transfer me, a police car pulls up next to us and stops. Melvin is going to move me.

Melvin fastens his seatbelt as the law enforcement officer approaches us.

He is looking at me. "Are you alright?"

In his direction, I turn my head. "I will be fine in a moment, but it would be fantastic if you could convince the photographers to stop following us. Through the use of the flashlights, they blinded me.

I'll talk to them about it," she said. It is time for you to go behind the wheel once more.

I examine the name tag on his police uniform. "Thank you, Officer Raphael."

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out something, then hands me.

When I take it from him, I note it contains his contact information.

"If you have any problems in the future, please call me."

I look back at the stop light and notice it is again painted red. "Thank you," I say.

As soon as the light changes color, my eyes will be ready to leave because they have adjusted to the new light.

When the light turns green, I move away from the intersection.

When I look in the rearview mirror, I notice that the police officer is holding the paparazzi on their shoulder.

Melvin is depicted with a grin on his face. I cannot accept that you successfully got rid of them. I have tried every trick in the book to get them off my tail while I was driving, but despite my best efforts, none of them have been successful.

I bring my hand to his. "You're finally here with me, kid. You're going to pick up all of my ways."

"I'm not a kid." His tongue sticking out at me demonstrates that I am right.

I chuckle to myself. Take a look at yourself. Right now, you are behaving like one. I am going to pull over and kick your behind if you give me those puppy dog eyes. I promise you that.

With a chuckle, Melvin leans his head back and laughs.

That he is laughing naturally and not in an attempt to make himself laugh, as he did while Michelle was there, is a welcome change.

Miller Industries has a parking garage, and I pull the Audi R8 into the garage. In the direction of my parking spot, I head in that direction, and as I am there, I notice a BMW parked next to my place, and there is a nameplate on the wall.

Seraphina should have spent time putting her ex-husband's name on a location. My only hope is that they can make this time around work.

I have observed the glances they exchange with one another, and they will get back together sooner or later. However, I hope it will happen sooner rather than later since I want to be present when she flirts with my brothers.

As soon as Melvin and I enter the building, we proceed to my administrative office. I noticed my computer was turned on as I opened the door.

By opening the CD-ROM on the computer, I can retrieve the disk that I had previously inserted.

Melvin takes a peek at it. "What's that?"

I responded, "Nothing," I slipped the disc into the cover before placing it in my handbag.

"If it's nothing, you wouldn't be trying to hide it from me." He moves forward by taking a step. "Now, tell me what it is."

My brothers bought me a video, but I have not had the opportunity to watch it until now.

To my right, he is seated. "All right, put that in there. Together, let's watch it, shall we?

When I am ready to put it in, Zinnia and Seraphina enter the room.

My superiors protect me. I am not sure I can tolerate Melvin watching what happened to me a few years ago.

The death of my child continues to have an impact on me, but I had to learn how to go about my life without my child.

If my child had been alive then, they would have been six years old.

I feel Melvin snatching me into his arms. "Katherine?"

In his direction, I turn my head. "What?"

"Are you alright?"

What is the reason for him asking me if I am OK?

I immediately became aware that I was crying when I felt a tear fall onto my hand. "No, I'm not," she said. At that moment, I suddenly recalled that my child was due to turn six years old today. I had inserted the DVD into the computer. "I need to find out who's responsible."

While she does so, Seraphina looks at the screen and walks around the desk. "Did you get evidence of who did it?"

"My brothers got it for me, but he couldn't turn it in as the evidence was stolen."

I am the focus of Melvin's attention. "Why would they steal it?"

Before the person who pushed me down the stairs could wipe the computer clean, they had to get it before they could do so. Even though they had already removed one of the cameras, they were unaware of the second video camera my brother was aware of, which could capture the individual.
