Chapter 33 - Introduction To Alchemistry

No sooner as the bell had rung, Mrs. Hunton quickly altered her stuff, packed it all up, and bolted from the classroom, still in a classy manner. The students on tbe other hadn't, still sat in their respective seats, too spellbound to actually move. It was only when the next class came that they were forced to move out.

As they shuffled out, quiet gossip could be heard amongst the students. "Hey, what do you think you would end up as? I wanna be a magician, blasting my enemies with nuclear explosions. Everyone would fear the name of Blarkney the awesome, hahaha!"

"Ughh, boys, them and their explosions. I would rather have them do martial arts, they would totally look handsome."

"Yeah, especially their abs. Ahh, just thinking about it makes me..."

"Shut up you all. Flesh is weak, steel is eternal. The path of science is tbe true way to go. Science will calculate everything in the universe, and grant us immortality!"

"U-ummm, w-w-why can't we just fuse everything together, right? That's how we will have the best of both worlds..."

"SHUT UP!" Everyone yelled.

On the other hand, as everyone was gossiping, Jake just wondered to himself, still deep within his thoughts, pondering at the sudden decision at Mrs. Hunton's of telling about the mystic arts now, especially with how she looked at him just before the end, as if she knew something he did not. This kept on bugging him until he reached his next class, alchemistry.

Even though he loved the class, skipping his way in, today was different. It was tbe big day.

Today they will create their first potion.

Everyone greeted Mr. Lauderin, who wore protective clothing, and sat down in their respective seats. They all wore gloves and goggles, as well as having the latest gas meters placed in their tables. Having done all that, they waited patiently waited for Mr. Lauderin to seat his lesson.

Once everyone was quiet, he stood up, coughed to gather attention, before starting the lesson.

"Today, we will do our first ever practical session. Since I believe that most of you had never created a potion, we will all start small. Today's potion will be the relatively simple and quick potion of Slowburn. Despite its name, it's one of the best and cheapest pain killers out there, which bring me to this point: before we start the practical, everyone must sign the non disclosure agreement that the recipe will not be leaked out, or else it will not look good for me, if you know what I mean." Hand hiding his hand, he spoke the last words quietly, yet everyone still clearly heard them, eliciting few chuckles from them.

As soon as the NDA's were signed, Mr. Lauderin clapped both his hands, and brought out a box beneath him. "Now, what we have here are the ingredients for the potion, of which I will write it on the board. And no, you cannot take pictures as well, there is no loopholes for it, so deal with it." A few disappointed voices could be heard, as holophones were heard being snapped back and being put back in their bags.

"Now, here are the ingredients and the required proportions for them. Some leeway can be given, but only a few grams and millilitres." Mr. Lauderin gave a final reminder as he wrote on the light screen.

Ingredients:

1) 50 grams ripe snowfleberries

2) 100 ml distilled dark water

3) 5 grams psychotic willow tree bark

4) 10 grams alumanite

5) 20 ml pixie pollen

Process:

1) First mash the berries smoothly with the pestle, making sure that the seeds are not mashed up as well (to reduce chances of poison catalyses)

2) Strain the resulting mushy pulp with half of the dark water, ensuring that the overall volume ends up around 120 - 125 ml

3) Grind the willow bark finely using the atomiser, sifting with 10 micrometer sieve to ensure no lumps pass through.

4) Over a small Tousten burner, stir the willow bark powder and snowfleberry solution until fully dissolved, indicated by colour changing from dark blue to light cyan.

5) Slowly add the alumanite, ensuring that no spills occur. Once dissolved, there should be a dark brown residue at the bottom of the beaker. Remove it, and filter to the final beaker.

6) While still warm, mix in the pixie dust, to catalyse the final reaction into intended product. Product is complete once small sparkles can be seen emanating from the potion.

"Once the potion is complete, you must cool it down to 10°L, before it can be consumed. This only has a shelf life of 3 months, so it must be consumed pretty quick. Any questions? If not, you may begin." Mr. Lauderin spread out his hands, indicating that the ball was in their court.
