Chapter 31 - 15. Ori-Genes (part 1)

*Warning: This chapter will have a lot of brain-whacking science stuff*

Character : Nathan Fiore, Ori-Genes

-----

Angel went out for a bit to grab something from her dorm room, leaving me and Eric just by ourselves with the seniors.

Fortunately, Caitlyn was really kind. She gave us a tour of all the weird machines and mechanical tools that are present in the club room. There are some of the weirdest machines that I've ever seen, but no doubt they are useful for the research regarding origin science.

For example, a much more advanced capacity testing tool with five crystal balls instead of just one. This one not only can stand a much larger energy intensity, but it can also give out a range of numbers that our origin capacity was truly giving. Instead of just giving one number, the tool will give out a number every second of the test. Because our origin energy always changes depending on how much we are giving out, the number that came out will be inconsistent.

Eric gave the big testing tool a try, and the tool did not explode. It showed a range of numbers starting from six thousand nine hundred to eight thousand, which is a massive range considering his original number was only seven thousand one hundred. This shows just how fluctuating our origin energy can be, so much so that the number that came out can have over a thousand points of range.

Then, I gave it a try. Surprise-surprise~, my number is bigger than Eric's.

The number that came out for me ranged from seven thousand one hundred to eight thousand five hundred. That's only a tiny bit more compared to Eric, but it's still larger. Seeing that he had lost, Eric looked really annoyed.

"Then, how did you get two thousand?" He asked after seeing my result, and I just showed him.

When I touched the testing tool, I controlled the output to be as less as possible, but it shouldn't be too small. I tried keeping the output as consistent as possible, and the numbers that came out from the screen showed exactly what truly happened.

The numbers when I kept it ranged from 1990 to 2050, which was a crazy small range. But the most amazing part was how most of the time, the number that came out was exactly two thousand. Because I kept the origin output consistent, the number that came out became consistent as well. Although there will be choke moments where the number falls lower or higher, that only happens once every three to five seconds.

After playing around with the origin testing tool, Angel came back with a massive book. We went back to the large oval table we previously talked at, and this time we sat down alongside the seniors.

"This is the lesson book for the origin science subject. It's a subject that only existed in the third year, but I'm giving you guys a quick look at it since you two were really curious." Angel explained while opening the book and showing us the contents, and she opened the exact page that we are looking for.

It is a page about gene distribution from two parents for their children. It explains everything down to the details, and I was quite shocked at how well the page explains it.

But, Eric seemed to have problems understanding this page.

"Can you… explain to me about how to read this table?" Eric pointed his hand at a table of gene distribution from parents with different origins, and Angel nodded.

"Before I explain, the two of you should know about the three types of origins that existed in Avenor. First is the 'Basic' origins which consisted of Fire, Water, Earth, Lightning, and Wind origins. They are the natural origins which sourced from the world around us, and they are often mentioned as the basic origin type.

Then, the 'Special' origins, which consisted of Light and Darkness origins. They are not natural since light and darkness isn't exactly a chemical or biological object, unlike the five basic origins. Because of this, they are named as the special origin type.

The table that you're seeing right now is made from the gene relation between the basic origins and the special origins. A normal person in Avenor can have three levels of 'Origin Genes' within them. The first level dictates what basic origin that person is more leaning towards."

Angel then pointed a pen at the table we are looking at, and specifically she pointed at a combination between the letter F and L. "What you're seeing here, 'F-f-L', shows the three levels of the gene.

The first and capital 'F' is what I said before, about what basic origin that person is leaning more on. The second and non-capital 'f' is the second level of the gene, and it dictates how pure the basic origin on the first level really was. Truthfully it doesn't hold much importance other than deciding how pure someone's basic origin is. And finally, the letter 'L' decides what special origin that person is leaning more on."

Angel paused the explanation for a bit so that we could process it. She then notices the super confused face we're wearing, and she lets out an annoyed sigh.

"I'll explain it in Dumber terms, then! The big F stands for Fire, which means that person is a fire origin! The small f is useless, and the big L means that person has the blood of a light origin inside of them. Get it!?"

Well, if you explain it like that, then of course we get it. Eric and I nodded out of courtesy at her, and she continued her explanation.

"Then, how do we decide what a person's origin was? And how can we tell if someone has the basic origin or the special origin based on their genes? Well, we use the very front letter first.

If the first letter is 'F', then that means their origin is fire. If the letter is 'W', then their origin is water. 'E' for earth, 'T' for thunder or lightning, and 'A' for air or wind. It's just a language problem because we normalized the term 'Wind' origin and 'Lightning' origin instead of air and thunder.

Then, what if their origin is light or darkness? The answer is the sixth letter that can also be used. The letter 'N', which stands for None.

For light origin, the gene will start with the letter 'N', and end with the letter 'L'. It can be 'N-f-L', or 'N-w-L', and so on. The same goes for darkness origin, but the end letter is 'D'. So it will be 'N-f-D' or 'N-w-D'.

So far, any questions?"

Angel asked us, but our expression looks like we are trying our best to understand everything. Seeing the complexity in our faces, she giggles.

"It's okay if you don't understand it. This subject is for third years anyway. It's still way too early for you to get it--"

"No, I understand it." I cut her off before she goes off on this tangent, and she turned surprised at me.

"R-Really?" Her eyes were wide open, and Eric next to me nodded as well.

"Your explanation is very clear. Please continue." Eric said which surprised Angel even more, and she looked quite happy being praised.

"O-Okay! Man, it's really different teaching geniuses. In any case, that's the basic part that you should know. Now, let's dive into the harder details.

The second letter. It wasn't actually useless. If anything, it is just as important as the first and third letter, just not in a way you might think.

The second letter dictates the purity of the gene. For example, this gene says 'F-f-L', which means the owner is a fire origin and with a light origin inside their blood. And the second letter in this case, the small 'f', means the person has the purity of the fire origin inside them.

Next, the gene below it says 'F-w-L'. Just like the first one, the owner is a fire origin with a light origin inside them. But, their ability to use fire origin will be fundamentally different compared to the first gene.

Why do you think that is?"

This time, Angel throws a question to keep us engaged. I lifted my hand to try answering.

"Because the purity of the first gene… leans more towards fire origin?" I answered a little awkwardly, and Angel nodded firmly.

"Correct. The small 'f' stands for fire, and the small 'w' stands for water. Because the first gene has the purity type of fire origin, it means their origin is much purer and stronger compared to the second gene. They are both fire origin users, but the power that can be unleashed from the first gene is potentially more powerful.

The same goes for the genes 'W-w-L', 'E-e-D', and so on. If the first and second letters of the gene are the same letter, that means their genes are pure and their abilities are much stronger.

So far, is it clear?"

Both Eric and I nodded, and we stared at the table once again. Eric noticed something that wasn't explained yet, and he pointed his finger.

"Then, what about the small 'n'? For the second letter?" Eric asked, and Angel started explaining.
