Just as Rosa was about to surrender to a kiss, Kael's abrupt triumphed smile sobered her up.
"There's a right time for everything," he murmured, his tone shifting to a serious one. "Now tell me. Do you have enemies?"
Enemies? The question hit her like a lightning bolt. Her mind hesitated but her body went into survival mode, and blood rushed in her ears as doubts crept in. Just who the hell was the target of that assassination?
She felt Kael read the terror on her face. He released her chin and brushed the back of his armored hand against her cheek time and time again, initially, she resisted the gesture that she perceived as a sign of submission. Yet, with each gentle stroke, she found herself calming, able to draw a steadier breath.
His touch stopped, and his hazel eyes softened. "Forgive my blunt question. The assassins must be fools, mistaking you for the princess."
