I'm gradually getting the ability to update regularly again, and it's all thanks to everyone in the reviews and PM who gave me support, constructive criticism and ideas to formulate around. Huge shoutout to VermillionSummers for giving me the idea to finally explain Erza's change. So if you don't mind, I'll be using that for this chapter. I've delayed this moment enough already.

Also to N3RU-SAN who took the time to PM me. Also to everyone else who likes this story, the reason why I work so hard to make this the best version of my imagination as much as possible is for you guys. Again, thank you!

By the way, read my story if you're not doing anything else. Some of my theories require an open and attentive mind. And this chapter is particularly long.

I have decided not to rush the ending because I don't want this to end haphazardly. At the same time tho, I don't want to make this too long (30+ chapters) cos it's unnecessary. Just the right balance to make this both a satisfying and timely read. I also won't be adding OCs as much as possible because I want people to have an idea of the characters already to avoid delays to the story. Just giving a heads-up that this will be a yandere Erza story until the end, so Erza will get more extreme as the remaining chapters progress. You have been warned.

Please enjoy :)

Chapter 18: A Glimpse Into Her Heart

Fairy Hills

The sun crept through the windows and disturbed the slumber of Fairy Hills' scarlet-haired resident.

Slowly squinting her eyes awake, Erza welcomed the new day with her thoughts of Natsu.

"It's so warm, just like himErza thought with a smile. Even when she just woke up, Erza couldn't stop thinking of Natsu.

"Maybe we can take another mission later" she thought to herself with a smirk. "It's not like it's anyone's business anyway. If it was Mira going with Natsu, Gildarts wouldn't have a problem with it, but if it's me…" She remembered the previous day after Natsu and she came back from their mission, with a scowl on her face.

It bothered her slightly that she took that tone with Gildarts (Erza still refers to Gildarts by his name in her mind because after a long time of having Master Makarov as their guild master, she couldn't break out of that habit yet), but she was barely keeping herself in check already. It pissed her off that she couldn't even do jobs with Natsu anymore without people talking behind her back, just because he's with Mira now. It's not like it was a crime.

"Is that how everyone else see it? They're probably just too scared to say it straight to my face. It's not like I'm hurting anyone besides that woman, but she deserves it. This is what she gets for stealing Natsu from me." In Erza's mind, she would've been with Natsu if Mira didn't steal Natsu from her at the time. Erza was so angry that she looked for someone to blame. Her hatred for Mira was deeply rooted by her jealousy. Jealous that she had the heart of Natsu without even trying. Here Erza was, doing everything she can to have Natsu's afection even if it was just for a short while, yet her efforts were all for naught at the behest of Natsu only ever having eyes on MIra. This caused Erza's heart to darken even more.

She would go so far as to make life miserable for Mira as much as she can without being obvious.

She would accidentally "drop" her plate of strawberry cheesecake on the floor after Mira just went to the trouble of making it for her so that Mira would have to clean it up. Erza would look at Mira like a cruel mistress whenever Mira cleans Erza's mess, thinking to herself that Mira deserved it.

She would often intentionally ignore Mira whenever the barmaid tries to engage in a conversation with her. As much as she possibly can, she avoided Mira so she wouldn't be so obvious and arouse suspicion.

She would take Natsu's time away from Mira and use missions as an excuse. The purpose of their missions wasn't just for Erza to find a way to penetrate Natsu's heart. After all, imagining Mira longing for Natsu whenever he was away from her gave Erza a feeling of satisfaction and brought a smile to her face. She was angry that someone was able to call her out on it. She already had enough on her plate trying to ignore Natsu's disregard for her feelings and Mira's annoying happy-go-luck attitude as if trying to mock her for having Natsu. And also the fact that it meant some were already at the point where they were starting to think something more was going on between Natsu and her. If they were to find out, it wouldn't be pretty for her.

*clink*

Putting down her toothbrush, she looked at the mirror, inspecting herself to make sure she looks her best for Natsu.

She checked if she still had any sleep in her eyes, then proceeded to spray herself with her usual strawberry perfume. She combed her hair again, and checked her breath once more. Finishing off, she Requipped her Ataraxia Armor without the sword wings (Google this armor if you forgot it). This outfit replaced her old style of wearing the armor and the skirt, and this became her new look. She figured that this was the best piece to wear so that she could win her battle for Natsu's heart. After all, a lot of people have already complimented how beautiful she looks in it, with her hair fashioned into a pretty ponytail.

"Yosh! I'm ready."Seeing that she was all good, she raised her arm at the level of her chin and clutched her fist, finishing her morning ritual. "I wonder what the day holds for us, Natsu." She finished as she headed out of Fairy Hills and made her way to the guild, greeting Laki, Wendy and Carla, who she encountered on the way.

"Good morning, Erza-san." Laki, Carla and Wendy greeted.

"Why, good morning to you guys as well." She said, returning their greeting.

"Do you want to head to the guild together?" Wendy asked. Since they were all heading to the same place, they might as well walk to the guild together. The more the merrier, right? At least that's what Wendy thought.

"I'm sorry Wendy, but I have somewhere else to be. You guys can head there first, I'll be in the guild shortly."

"Okay."

Erza and the three of them waved each other goodbye and went their way.

"I wonder where Erza-san is going this early in the morning." Wendy asked.

"Where do you think she could've gone? Only one possibility comes to mind..." Laki said with a mischievous tone and glint in her eyes, "Erza has a new boyfriend!"

"Whaaaat?!" Wendy and Carla reacted.

"Think about it. Heartbroken from her break-up with Jellal, she found herself a new man. The only question here is who is this mystery man? Or woman?" Laki said the last part with a mischievous grin, even more worked up than earlier.

Wendy was blushing and stuttering, the possibility of Erza with a woman coming to mind.

"Stop messing with us! Calm yourself woman!" Carla exclaimed to no avail, as Laki was practically off in her own world while Wendy was still a blushing mess.

"Would you like your eggs fried or scrambled?" Mira asked her pink-haired boyfriend with one hand holding the handle of the pan.

"Whichever is easier" Natsu smiled warmingly, earning him an equal smile in response. "Scrambled it is." Mira decided.

Mira stayed the night at Natsu's. She missed him. While he came back from his jobs with Erza, they almost always take another one sooner than Mira would've liked. Due to her innocence, she brushed this off as Erza wanting to be with her best friend after her breakup with Jellal. She didn't even think of the possibility that something was going on between them. She still remembers what drew Natsu and her together, but she always believed that Natsu and she was already a closed book.

But it's been quite some time already, so Mira was starting to get worried that her boyfriend might become a nomad like Gildarts. She actually planned on talking to Erza about this soon. Her generosity with her lover's time could only go so far. She needs him too.

In Natsu's eyes, they looked like a newlywed couple right now. That thought brought a smile to his face. In all honesty, Natsu already bought a ring for Mira. But with the way things are with Erza, he couldn't muster the courage to pop the question. He had to deal with her first.

Thinking about Erza, he instinctively sighed. Unfortunately, this didn't escape Mira.

"What's wrong?" Mira turned off the stove as their breakfast was just about done.

"Huh? Oh, it's nothing. I'm just thinking about this new mission Erza has planned for us." He lied.

"And that has you this bummed out so early in the morning?" Mira prodded.

"Well, why wouldn't I be? That means I won't get to see you again for days." Natsu playfully pouted.

"You're such a kid." Mira teased, but on the inside, she was feeling the same way. "Tell you what, I'll talk to Erza with you later and see what we can do about it." She suggested, leaning her elbows on the table, putting her face closer to Natsu who was across the table.

"I don't need you to do that for me. I can talk to her on my own."

"Really? If you could, why are you still going along with Erza then?" Mira gave him a teasing smile.

"..." He struggled coming up with an excuse. Hearing her giggle, he realized Mira was teasing him again.

"Hey! Don't treat me like a kid!" he playfully exclaimed. "Calm down, I'm just teasing." Mira playfully waved him off with her hand.

Erza was standing on a branch in one of the nearby trees around Natsu's house. Watching Natsu and Mira through the window, she clicked her tongue in annoyance. "Tch. How irritating."

A beautiful scarlet-haired woman walked into the Fairy Tail guild and caught the attention of its members.

"Whoa! Who's that beauty?"

"She looks intimidating… It reminds me of someone."

"Doesn't she look like Erza?"

"Hey! You're right!"

"Of course she does you idiots, that's Erza's mom."

"Seriously?!"

"Do you guys live under a rock?!"

She was Irene Belserion, known in history as the Queen of the Dragons and was also formerly known as the Scarlet Despair. But now with peace between the continents of Ishgar and Alakitasia, she put her dreadful past behind her and chose to live a life of peace in Fiore, ironically enough since it was the place she previously tried to conquer together with the Alvarez Empire.

Besides dragon slaying magic, she is also the mother of the queen of the fairies, Titania Erza Scarlet. The reason why she chose to settle down in Fiore was so that she could be nearer to her daughter, which was actually the purpose of her visit today. She was even there for Makarov's birthday celebration.

Every once in a while, she would visit her daughter and try to strengthen her relationship with her. Now that she was free of her duties as a general of the Alvarez Empire and was able to travel with leisure in mind, she was able to mend her spirit and become more in-touch with her emotions. Finally having a mother-daughter relationship with her daughter to the point that they weren't tense around each other anymore and Erza even confiding in her sometimes, she was truly happy that she chose to leave the Alvarez Empire behind. Not that she completely hated it there (behind-the-scenes, they weren't as distant to each other as everyone observed during the Alvarez Arc), but she never realize that her instinct as a mother was so strong. She wanted to be there for Erza, this time as her mother.

She couldn't forgive herself for abandoning her baby and subjecting her to a childhood of torment. If she could, she would go back in time and annihilate the Zeref worshippers who built the R-system and enslaved her little girl. She couldn't bring herself to kill her daughter, so she killed herself instead. It was a miracle that she was brought back to life. She couldn't let her chance at redemption go to waste.

"Is my daughter here?" Irene spotted Wendy sitting with Carla, Happy and Lucy and asked her the whereabouts of her daughter. She also came to be close with Wendy during her visits. During the time her spirit was inside Wendy during the 100 Years Quest, they developed a bond. Now, she somehow became Wendy's mentor and teacher, but also came to see Wendy as a second daughter. After all, she was also the mother of dragon slayer magic.

"Not yet. But earlier this morning, Erza-san said something about going somewhere before she comes to the guild." Wendy recalled her meeting with Erza this morning.

"Oh? Maybe she's gone to visit her boyfriend?" Irene suggested.

"You too?!" Wendy blushed, remembering what Laki was saying earlier.

"Hmm?" Irene had a question mark on top of her head.

"Ah! I just think that isn't the case…" Wendy shyly said.

"What do you mean? Didn't she have a boyfriend?" Irene remembered her conversation with her daughter during Makarov's birthday party.

"They broke up already." Wendy answered.

"I see." Irene responded simply.

"Eh? Did you already know about it, Irene-san?" Wendy asked. She wasn't expecting this lack of a reaction from Irene, so she was just naturally curious if she already knew about it.

"No, I didn't. But quite frankly, to me, it doesn't come as a surprise."

"What do you mean?" It was now Wendy's turn to ask.

"Well, this is just a mother's instincts talking, but when I saw the look in her eyes whenever she was with the blue-haired boy, I didn't feel the eyes of a woman in love. Not that I'm an expert on the subject though." Irene revealed, getting more guild members around them to become invested in their conversation.

"So you're saying that she doesn't really like Jellal?" Wakaba asked.

"That's strange, I could've swore that Erza always liked him." Lucy chipped in, joining their conversation.

"Oh yeah, Lucy! You're one of Erza's best friends, do you know what could've happened happened between them?" Macao asked.

"No, she's almost never around since their break-up. But even if she was, I don't think I can bring it up with her." Lucy paled, imagining how angry Erza will be when pressed about the topic.

"So my daughter's always away? I wonder why that would be?" Irene wondered out loud.

"That was weird to us too, since Erza never lets anything get in her way of keeping the guild in check. But lately, she's always away on missions with Natsu." Lucy looked off into the distance and put a hand in her chin in a thinking pose, actually wondering herself, why Erza keeps on going to missions with only Natsu instead of going with their team or even just taking some time to herself. She understood that Erza probably just wanted the company of her closest friends to get her through this tough time, but why only Natsu? And for some reason, Lucy feels as if Erza wasn't really affected by her break-up with Jellal. But she pushed it to the back of their mind and dismissed it as just her imagination.

"Interesting." Irene thought out.

"What's interesting about that, Irene-san?" Lucy asked, capturing the attention of a crowd now. It seems a lot of people were initially just eavesdropping on their conversation, but eventually grew more curious as it went on.

"The fact that she's going on missions with Natsu." Irene referred to Natsu by name and without using any honorifics because she felt a sense of connection to him, being Zeref's brother and all, and the person who is closest in age to her if you go by his first life with his birth family (he's only a few years younger than his older brother).

"Why?" Lucy continued.

"Because I believe he holds a special place in her heart."

"EHHH!" The group erupted, already jumping to their own conclusions.

"You think Erza likes Natsu?" A random guild member asked.

"Maybe she meant Erza seeing Natsu as a friend." Another member interjected.

"I see! That makes sense!" The first member responded.

The outburst of the group attracted attention from the other guild members, particularly those from the bar who was also looking at the commotion and wondering what it was all about.

"What the hell's going on over there?" Gildarts asked Mira from the bar, where he was drinking his beer.

"I have no idea, Master. But I think it has something to do with Erza's mom." Mira noticed Irene's arrival at the guild, but was too preoccupied by her duties as a barmaid that she couldn't welcome her. She also observed that more people flocked to the spot where Irene was in.

"But Natsu already has my big sister! That two-timing bastard!" Elfman angrily said.

"Don't jump to conclusions, you muscle-head! She didn't say anything about Natsu dating Erza." Evergreen smacked Elfman in the back of his head with her blade fan, causing Elfman to growl at her.

"She's right, let Erza's mom finish." Cana hazily said, her face a bit flushed as well, already a little drunk from drinking all day.

"Then, what do you mean by that, Erza's mom?" Elfman asked, forgetting what her name was.

"Like I said, I believe Natsu is special to my daughter. Well, it's just a hunch though. I can't truly say for certain what Erza feels."

"What made you think of that, though?" Gajeel asked her bluntly and to his wife, impolitely (considering Irene was their senior), prompting Levy to elbow him in the side of his stomach. Not that he felt anything though.

"Let's just call it a mother's intuition..." Irene winked at them, "Besides, it only makes sense that Erza would be attracted to a dragon slayer like Natsu. She is my daughter after all."

"Is it because you're also a dragon, Irene-san?" Wendy asked.

"That's right, Wendy. By the time Erza was born, I had already finished the process of dragonification and carried over a part of my dragon blood to her, albeit Erza is actually still more human than she is a dragon. Now, since dragon slayers are still humans, they are free to love whoever they want, be it another dragon slayer or not. However, on the other hand, by instinct, dragons are naturally attracted to their own kind." Irene taught them.

After a few seconds of sinking it in, they continued to ask some more questions.

"Even if that were the case, Natsu isn't a dragon though. Why would Erza be attracted to him, Irene-san?" Levy asked this time, quickly putting together the pieces of information that Irene was leaving and figuring out what she was getting at.

"Because on two occasions, Natsu has already reached the point when he used a dragon's power." Irene revealed, recalling Zeref's story of his first fight with Natsu and recounting Erza's story of her adventure with her team in the 100 Years Quest and how Ignia also lent his power to Natsu. Based on Irene's extensive knowledge of the dragons, this would mean that Natsu should have already been able to reach dragonification twice, but by some miracle, has somehow retained his humanity both times. She was unsure if it was because he also had the demon seed (E.N.D) inside him, but then Natsu already got rid of it when Lucy rewrote his book during his final battle with Zeref (Irene was able to pick up a lot of Team Natsu's stories since she was close to both Erza and Wendy, with Natsu's final battle with Zeref narrated to Erza and Wendy by Lucy and Happy), so he wouldn't have been able to stop the dragonification process the second time with Ignia.

"Now that you think about it, Natsu went berserk and almost turned into a dragon when he ate Ignia's flames." Happy thought. On the other hand, it was no secret that Natsu's fire dragon king mode was directly influenced by the power Igneel left him.

"That's right. Each time he borrows the power of a dragon, he becomes more like one." Irene finished.

"Does that mean Natsu is a dragon?!" Lucy gasped, the others mimicking her. Was Natsu disguising his dragon form this whole time?

"No. He just keeps a little of their essence, but he isn't actually one yet. Like Erza and the 1st and 3rd generation dragon slayers, he would have to undergo dragonification first to become an actual dragon." Irene cleared up.

Everyone just looked confused at this point. Seeing this, Irene simply chuckled. Seems like it was still too early to explain something like this to them.

"I know this is difficult to understand without prior knowledge on the dragons and dragon slayers, but basically, there's no need to worry. Natsu won't become a dragon unless he succumbs to dragonification."

"Hooohh…" They all exclaimed knowingly. But then, Carla thought of something.

"Then if Erza does like Natsu, wouldn't that be a problem? Since he's already dating Mira?" Hearing Carla's observation, the rest of them realized it too and gasped. Just as it looked like Elfman was about to react again, Irene interrupted him and dispelled their worries.

"Is that so..? Well, as I said, it's just a hunch. No need to take my words at face value."

They sighed in relief. They shuddered in fear when they thought about a serious fight between Erza and Mira. The two of them were so much stronger now compared to when they still had their rivalry. It'll get really ugly.

"But what if Erza does like Natsu? Would you support her decision?" Lucy was curious what Irene would think about it as Erza's mom. After all, it wasn't everyday they got to casually chat with and get the opinion of one of the world's strongest mages. The others lightheartedly looked at Irene expectantly, curious what Erza's mom had to say about it.

"If that were the case, then there might be a bit of a problem." Irene's demeanor immediately changed, now she looked slightly troubled, as if thinking about something of serious consequence.

Everyone became silent, not expecting her response. It wasn't her answer that shut them up, it was how serious her tone was and the troubled look on her face.

"Because Natsu-san is already dating Mira-san?" Wendy hesitantly asked, not sure what got Irene so upset all of a sudden.

"No, it's not that. It's what could happen to Erza if she falls in love with Natsu."

"What's wrong with that, Irene-san?" Wendy continued.

"I'm not saying that this is what would happen if that was the case, but if Erza falls in love with Natsu, there's a chance they might both be in danger."

"Danger?! What's gonna happen to them?" Gray interrupted. Hearing that two of his teammates and best friends might be in danger made him worried.

"This is just my theory, but when I gave birth to Erza, I tried enchanting myself onto her body so that I could be human again..." Besides Wendy and her closest friends who already knew about this, the others were shocked, to say the least "...I was unhinged and I wasn't at the right state of mind at the time. So when I tried enchanting myself to Erza, I might've also enchanted a bit of my deranged psyche onto her. My concern is that on a deep subconscious level at least, Erza might've been affected by that. It may not show itself on the surface, but there exists the possibility that Erza would do things even she herself deems unthinkable if she's in love with Natsu."

"Is it because of her dragon blood as well?" Levy asked, catching up to what Irene is trying to say.

"That's precisely it. Not only is Erza partly affected by her instinct to be with another dragon, she might have also been affected by my enchantment spell on her when she was just a newborn child. The longer Erza keeps her feelings for Natsu, the more likely her mind would break. There's no telling what she would do once that happens-to Natsu and to others."

Everyone was stunned into silence.

"G-good thing she doesn't like Natsu, right?" Macao said worriedly.

"Yeah, there's no way. She's seen Natsu as her younger brother since they were kids, no way would she be in love with him." Wakaba also thought.

"Besides, she's loved Jellal this whole time, suddenly getting feelings for Natsu is a bit off the mark." Lucy also uncomfortably said. Everyone agreed with her out of their fear of the worst. Hearing Irene's explanation, they naturally felt worried.

Seeing their reactions, she decided to ease their worries, "Relax. The possibility of something like that actually happening is very slim. I'm just messing with you guys" Irene chuckled. "Erza's friends are so worried. How cute."

They all just looked at her with their jaws on the ground "Erza's mom was making of us?!" They all exclaimed. Their initial shock at Irene actually joking around with them was soon replaced by laughter.

While they were all busy laughing at themselves, from the bar, Gildarts looked serious. His recent interaction with Erza and Irene's wild theory was on his mind.

"Could it be..?" Gildarts thought to himself. Sensing someone outside the guild, he looked at the guild doors expectantly.

"Erza..?"

So I feel like I'm making Erza's break-up with Jellal bigger than it should be, since I reference it a lot and all, but I do think that from an outsider's perspective who is in the dark about what is really happening with Erza, they wouldn't be able to help but chalk up Erza's strange behaviors to the most recent shocking news involving her.

I'm not really good at reading people and characters, so I can't say for sure that I can accurately portray them in my stories. But I do my best to imagine how the FT characters would act in certain situations and write it into my story, and I pray that's enough. That's why I also add the small details of what I think they would do or say at a particular moment. It helps me flush out the characters and integrate them more to the story.

Also again, this is just my own fanfiction story on Fairy Tail, so it's basically just my own take on how I wished the events in the canon unfolded. That's why I'll be supplementing Fairy Tail's lore with grand theories of my own, so it may be far-fetched at times. I am rather peculiar, but please do try to keep an open mind when reading my story. Try to read this unbiasedly and understandingly so you can have a clearer point of view. To those who resonate with my story though, I hope you enjoy this to the fullest. I won't be holding myself back.
