Chapter 18 - The Mundane

Oliver looked down from the skies towards the Capital City of Undine. The city had multiple rivers naturally flowing through it, creating five different spaces of land. Each space of land was labeled a different district of the capital and mainly focused on a different thing, although each had its fair share of variety. The first district, and the one furthest to the north, was the Shopping District, or the Commerce District, as most shops and businesses were based there. The second district was the Residential District and was located in the west. The third district was in the east and faced the ocean, thus it became the Marine District, becoming the focus of the sea's bounty and also the place with the highest tourist activity. The fourth district was the Educational District and housed the various schools and academic institutions of the capital, settling in the south. The district in the middle was given the name Zero District and was the Government District, along with the castle. Each district was vastly different, yet, they all came together to form the single city of Undine.

Oliver stared at the city from above, astonished by the beauty and complexity of the city. With streams of water flowing through the city and the ocean just across the horizon, everything seemed perfect.

"What a nice city," Oliver muttered to himself as he simply enjoyed the beautiful view of the city for the rest of his flight.

Oliver arrived in the capital city of Undine after an entire three days of traveling, from flights to staying at various hotels. The plane he was on arrived in the Commerce District by midday, the busiest time of the day. As he finally left the busy airport, he was met with crowded streets and large crowds. His eyes excitedly scanned the streets as he motioned for a nearby taxi. His destination? The Immortal Institution across the city.

Oliver only arrived at his destination near the evening of the day, but that didn't stop his excitement. The Immortal Institution spanned over multiple mountains, giving it one of the largest areas in the capital. While the actual size of it was large, the main building didn't pale in comparison. It stood haughtily over the other buildings next to it, almost looking down on them. It was a skyscraper that seemed to want to touch the heavens, carefully crafted with lightweight yet durable materials. It had a sleek overhead that pointed towards the north. Glass was meticulously implemented into the skyscraper, giving the design an even more modern appearance. High above, near the clouds, the logo of the school was inscribed.

The logo contained an X that was pierced through the middle by an uppercase I that was larger than it.

With steady steps, Oliver headed inside and found himself in a bustling lobby. The lobby was outfitted with chairs and loungewear, yet Oliver paid no mind to them. Instead, he got in line and waited for his turn with the receptionist.

"Next!"

"Hello."

"Hello to you too, sir. Now, what can I help you with?"

"I'm a new student and—"

"Ah, a new student. Can I have your ID number, please?"

Oliver took a deep breath and gave the person his ID number. The next moment, they were typing on their computer and handed him a slip.

"Take this over to the third floor. I've already let them know you're coming."

Oliver nodded and headed off to the next step in the process. This mundane task happened a few more times until he was finally given his room key and dorm room assignment. While physically he wasn't exhausted, his mind was a different story. Having to sit through lines and go through this annoying process for hours on end would tire anyone's mind. Hell, Oliver felt the people who constantly went to the DMV were less human than him.

"Finally, my room! It seems I've been placed in Sol Hall, a hall named after a legend that was foretold to be the Child of the Sun."

"Huh?"

"Eh?"

A man with skin that had received the sun's bounty stared at Oliver in surprise. His hair was a light amber, yet his eyes were a strong yellow. They were beautiful, yet they seemed to burn with the passion and heat of the sun.

"A roommate? A, a, a, a roommate!!" The man quickly took Oliver's hand and shook it violently. His smile was too pure for this world.

"Hehe! I'm Eman! How about you?"

"I-I'm Oliver. Uh, I'm sorry, but could you release my hand?"

"Oh yeah, sorry. So? Oliver, what are you?"

"Hmm?"

"O-oh w-well, y-you see…."

"You mean the supernatural, correct?"

"Mhm! Yep, that's it!"

"Even if we're crawling around here, you should still be more careful."

"Hehe!"

"I'm human. How about you, Eman?"

"Hehe, don't be too surprised, my friend. I'm a Dark Elf! Ain't that cool? Eh? Eh?"

"Are you an idiot?"

"Huh? Eh? Why!?"

"You know, let's just make a billboard declaring our supernatural origins and world."

"Geh! H-ha-haha! I-I'll be quieter." Eman crouched down, stared at the floor, and started to draw circles in the dirt. Normally, Oliver would just ignore such blatant sulking, especially from another guy, however, he just looked too pitiful.

"J-just try to be careful, okay?"

"Okay!"

"So, are we roommates?"

"Uh, yeah. Actually, you're the only other person, except for me, inside Sol Hall."

"Huh?"

"W-well, you see, this hall is the oldest on the entire campus. However, y-you need special qualifications to be admitted here." Eman mumbled the last part, looking down at the ground. He shook his head and continued,

"Well, anyway, I'll show you around, okay?"

Oliver watched as Eman walked straight into a door, then proceeded to try and laugh it off. He started to genuinely get concerned about his academy life, especially considering his new roommate in all of this.

Sol Hall was located in the mountain behind the skyscraper. The mountain had been molded into the perfect educational environment possible. Each hall serves as both their dormitory and basic class schedules. While Sol Hall was at the base of the mountain, it was a place only available for the elite.

As Oliver was getting familiar with the dormitory, Eman got a notification on his face. A face that could only be described as too pure for this world, a face that could do no wrong. A face that suddenly changed to pure malice and anger, yet even that was only for a brief moment before his pure personality returned.
