Walking towards the kindergarten, I eagerly looked for my friends. I was excited to show off my magic eyes and couldn't wait any longer. I had gotten my Quirk just as the weekend started, and they were busy with other stuff, but now this was my moment. As soon as I spotted them, I started walking over. Then I noticed something strange: Akari was wearing a white hood that covered her entire head except for her face. What's up with that? Well, I was going to ask anyway.
"Hey!" I called out, catching their attention.
"Why do you look so happy?" Bakugo asked, narrowing his eyes.
"Something amazing happened when the week started. Can you guess what it is?"
"Did you break your record of consistent wins in Smash Brothers?" Bakugo guessed.
"No."
"Did you finally convince your parents to get you a pet?" Akari asked with a twinkle in her eyes.
"No," I said with a disappointed tone.
"Did you awaken your Quirk?" Izuku asked.
"YES!" I exclaimed. Immediately, I activated my Quirk and lifted the three of them into the air.
"This is amazing! You just made us fly!" Akari said, her excitement bubbling over.
"Please take me down," Izuku pleaded, looking a bit green around the gills.
I took Izuku down but left the others up because they still wanted to fly.
"So, you have telekinesis?" Bakugo asked.
"Yes, but I call it Magic Eyes because when I use it, my eyes start glowing."
"That's incredible! By the way, I seriously am confused. Why are you wearing a white hoodie?" I asked Akari.
She started trailing off, "Well, it's..."
"If you don't want to talk about it, it's okay," I quickly interjected.
"No, no, I should actually tell you guys. I can't really hide it forever." She took off her hood, and the three of us were surprised. Her previously black hair had turned white, and she had Silver horns.
"Did your Quirk awaken as well?" Izuku asked.
"Well, yes. I don't mind the hair, but the horns—I really didn't want them."
"I think they're cool," I said. "I wish I had horns too."
"You say that because you're a boy. You love this kind of stuff, but I don't."
"Well, I guess you can say that. But your horns are really beautiful. They are shape like a crown, going straight and curving up like a katana."
"Do they really?" she said shyly, a small smile forming. "Really?"
"Can I ask something?" Izuku said. "Is this your Quirk, just horns?"
"Actually, no. Look." Akari lifted her hand, and blades sprouted out. "I can also turn into a dragon. My Quirk is called Blade Dragon. It's allows me to create blades and gives me the strength of a dragon Keep in mind, because I'm still a kid, my dragon form is really small."
"Your Quirk is AMAZING!" Izuku screamed.
"That just leaves you, Izuku," Bakugo said.
"Well, yeah, but I'm pretty sure my Quirk will appear soon," Izuku replied.
A couple of months passed, and many of our classmates' Quirks started appearing. Others showed signs of awakening.
"This is weird," Akari said. "Why hasn't your Quirk appeared yet?"
"Maybe you did awaken it but didn't notice. You need to do something to activate it," Bakugo suggested.
"Well, Mom said she will take me to the doctor tomorrow so we can see," Izuku said with a smile.
"This is it. This is where everything will go wrong for him," I thought.
One day later, the news broke out in our class. The teachers announced that Izuku was Quirkless. I tried to stop them but I failed.
"What the hell are these teachers doing, telling the whole class about this?" I thought angrily. "Now he's going to be an outcast. I won't let this slide."
When I got back from school, I went straight to my parents. They were on the couch, flirting, but I didn't care.
"Mom, Dad!" I called out. They were startled and jumped away from each other.
"What is it, Junpei?" my mother asked, her face red.
"Mom, everyone in our class started bullying Izuku and calling him names."
"Why would they do that?" Mom asked with a worried tone.
"Because the teachers told the entire class that Izuku is Quirkless," I explained.
"WHAT?!" my parents yelled. "Why would they do something like that?" my mom asked, shocked.
"It's a good thing you told us, son. We will take care of it," my father said confidently. "They won't get away with this easily."
The next morning, the teachers were heavily punished for what they did, but the damage was already done. Every kid in the class avoided Izuku, except for the three of us.
"Well, Quirkless or not, you'll still be beneath me," Bakugo said.
Akari hit him on the head. "Stop saying that! He's already crushed."
"I'm just saying the truth," Bakugo retorted.
Seeing this scene, I realized I hadn't managed to change enough to save their relationship. I decided to let it play out until the lake incident, where their relationship truly broke. After that, Bakugo started bullying Izuku, and only Akari and I defended him. We tried to keep their relationship from completely falling apart.
One day, while Akari and I were at Izuku's apartment, his mom called out, "Do you boys want sandwiches?"
"Yes, please," we responded. As she left, we played cards. Suddenly, I heard the sound of tears falling onto the table. When I looked, it was Izuku.
"Junpei, Akari, do you believe that I can become a hero?" he asked with a sad voice.
The three of us stood silent for a while, the silence suffocating us, until I started talking. "Izuku, what do you think a hero is?"
Izuku and Akari were confused. "What do you mean?" Izuku asked.
"Just answer the question," I said.
"A hero is someone who saves people and defeats bad guys."
"Yes, but do you want to hear something I learned from my family? Not every hero is an actual hero."
"What do you mean?" Izuku asked.
"A lot of heroes only care about money and fame. They don't care that much about saving people. So, Izuku, do you want to save people?"
"Yes," he answered.
"Just that fact makes you greater than a lot of heroes out there. If you want to become a hero, you, Akari, and I can train together. It doesn't matter if you have a Quirk or not. Having powers and defeating villains doesn't make someone a hero. The fact that a hero helps people is what makes them a hero. If you help a girl get away from a thug, that makes you a hero because you helped. Do you understand?"
Izuku started crying. "Thank you, Junpei. Thank you."
"Alright then, I will train with you and Akari."
Behind the wall, Izuku's mom was crying, having overheard what I said to her son.
Unknowingly Hearing that speech from Junpei made Izuku's mom feel relieved, knowing her son had friends who would stand by him even though he didn't have any powers. This thought eased a lot of her guilt and stress, and because of that, she never started stress eating and never ended up gaining weight.
