I found Scott leaning by the corral holding a bottle of beer, his hat bent low over his face, his shoulders hunched. I could tell he had a lot on his mind since the Sheriff left.
"Hey," I said softly, stepping next to him.
"Not now, Chloe." He said in a ragged breath.
"Listen, I know you're hurting," I felt my own voice choke up. "He was just a kid, and probably one of the only people I'd grown fond of."
Scott took a swig of the beer again.
"What did Barker say?"
"They're gonna conduct an investigation, talk his folks about it, I guess." He said. "Couldn't have been DUI, he was smart."
That tree didn't come out of nowhere, I wanted to say. I gave him a light squeeze on the shoulder and left him alone.
Easton and I run into each other in the barn, I had left my cellphone in the attic. He gives me a friendly natured smile.
"Well look who it is, you've been coming in here a lot lately." Easton says.
