I washed my face in the women's bathroom sink and stared at the mirror. My eyes were a little baggy. What were the odds of Lana and her step mom showing up at the ranch? The last thing I needed was a distraction. As long as i ignored whatever ties I  had with Vic, the kids included, I  would be fine.

Maternal attachment had eluded me years ago. I wasn't a monster. The system did this me.

I was cleaning the tables as Lana and Mark argued in the cafeteria about the supposed school project they were working on. Wendy seemed happier as she left work early.

"Yo, Chloe," Mark called to her.

"What?" I said with a mild annoyance.

"C'mere." He beckoned. I glared at him. He gave her a look that said. If you don't come over, I'll tell my dad where you've been sleeping.

I groaned and walked over. "How can I help you?"

Lana maintained a straight look.

"What's a better topic to work on? Penguin behaviors or horses?" He asked.
