Chapter 1 - New Life

Sitting on a rock in the middle of a forest, a beautiful young girl with long violet hair and piercingly cold scarlet eyes had her leg propped over a wolf corpse, many other corpses scattered all around her. She was covered in crimson blood, so her clothes turned red, and her originally white skin was at the moment dripping with blood. It was a gruesome scene, but the young girl didn't seem to care.

The smell of blood was assaulting her nose, and all she could see was blood and guts of wolves, but she was stoically calm and composed, looking like a maniac.

"Uuuuf-" the young girl exhaled slowly, standing up like nothing was wrong. She may have looked calm on the surface, but her mind was in turmoil, but not because of the dead wolves, but because of what happened before she encountered the wolves.

She was originally sitting in her office in the hospital, taking care of some paper work, when a young doctor rushed into her office. "Doctor, we need your help with resuscitation!" the young man shouted and the young girl, doctor Veronik Sarah Everhill, stood up and rushed out of the office, followed by the young man, "Where?" she asked. "Right wing, second hall!"

Veronik entered the right wing and saw a man sprawled on the ground, a few younger doctors and medics tending to him already, but as he was in a strange condition, they couldn't resuscitate him. Veronik instantly kneeled by the man's side and started CPR. After nearly an hour of hard work, the man finally regained consciousness, but his condition was still not stabilized.

Veronik quickly started preparing medicine, but before she could even take it, the man suddenly jumped at her and started punching her. He was a psychiatric patient, suffering from schizophrenia and for some reason, no medicine worked on him, so he often had relapses and attacked people.

The man was a retired MMA fighter, so even as all the other people present tried to stop him from beating Veronik, he kept on raining punches o her head, even cracking her skull. He only stopped when someone injected a strong sedative into his buttocks, but that was already too late for Veronik. While saving the life of a psychiatric patient, she was beaten to death, her brain smashed into a liquid form.

Veronik herself wasn't weak. She was quite a good fighter, but the man took her by surprise, and she had her hands full of medical equipment, so she didn't have the chance to resist as he delivered the first punch at her, and even as she wanted to fight back later, the first punch already did great damage to her skull and she was feeling light-headed, and couldn't protect herself from the rain of punches.

After Veronik lost consciousness from the punches, she was aware that she was dying, but she wasn't really sad or aggrieved, as in her whole life, she saved many lives and felt content with what she achieved. Her consciousness sank into darkness, and she suddenly saw a dim light in the distance. It was only a slight speck of light, but for some reason, she felt drawn to it and wanted to approach it. But floating in the darkness rendered her motionless and helpless.

She gritted her teeth and used all her will to move towards the light. At first, nothing happened, but after a moment, she found out that even though her body wasn't moving, the distance between her and the light was decreasing.

She didn't know how much time passed, but she eventually reached the light and it enveloped her. Suddenly, she found herself standing in a room with a man unfamiliar to her, dressed in clothes similar to clothes from ancient China, standing in front of her with a calm face.

"Who are you?" she asked with a frown.

"Me?" the man snickered slightly. "That doesn't matter for now! What matters is why you are here!"

Veronik's frown deepened. "Why am I here?" she asked warily.

The man had a light sneer on his lips. "I brought you here after you died!"

"Why?" Veronik remained guarded.

Seeing Veronik's reaction, the man's sneer deepened. "Aren't you surprised that you are dead?" he asked playfully.

"I expected it!" Her frown deepened. "Why and how did you bring me here?" she asked.

"Your soul is special!" the man suddenly turned serious, the smirk on his lips replaced by a solemn frown. "Your soul didn't fit into your world and that's why the world eliminated you by killing you!"

Hearing that, Veronik frowned. "And why did you bring me here then?"

"To unleash your potential!" the man said with his gaze sweeping over Veronik, clearly seeing that she was much calmer than anyone in the same situation would be.

Veronik frowned. "I doubt you would do that if it gives you nothing to gain!" she said coldly.

"But that's only natural!" the smirk returned to the man's lips and he spoke. "I'll give you a new chance in life, and you will go through a test. If you pass it, I'll give you a task in the future."

"And if I fail?" Veronik raised a brow in suspicion.

The man shrugged. "Then you can just take it like you've been given a new life, but that is... only if you can survive even after failing the test!" he sneered coldly.

Veronik wanted to ask more, when she felt a strong pull at her soul and started losing consciousness. As her sight was getting hazy, she heard the man say something more. "I'll put some new information into your brain, so use it wisely!"

With that, Veronik fainted and when she woke up again, she found herself wounded in the middle of the woods, and surrounded by wolves. She swiftly kicked away one that was lunging at her, and was surprised that she found a new piece of information in her brain, telling her everything about wolves, their habitats, and habits.

With that, she knew all the weaknesses in wolves' attacks and bodies, and quickly killed off the whole pack, and sat atop the stone, with her leg propped on one of the wolf corpses.
