Chapter 18 - Red’s Help

Destiny's POV

"What are you going to do with my father? I don't think we can easily get inside his bedroom." I asked as we were leaving his room.

"Leave everything to me; follow my lead so nothing goes wrong. I want you to stay in one of the guest rooms on the second floor on the north wing while I talk with your dad, assuming he is still awake at this hour." Red responded.

"He has been suffering from insomnia lately, and he hates taking sleeping pills." He added I couldn't stop worrying about my dad even if he disowned me and kicked me out of our own house; I didn't want anything to happen to him.

"How was his health?" I asked with concern.

"You have nothing to worry about; Carmen and Carmie ensured he was always healthy. They didn't know about his sleeping problems; he only confided with me." My ex answered, and my dad really cared about them since he didn't want them to worry about him.

I knew they wanted to keep my dad healthy since they are after our family's wealth, and if something happened to my father, I would be his legal heir unless he already changed his last will and testament.

"It is time for us to go," Red said, and I nodded my head.

I didn't want him to know I felt terrible.

I tiptoed as I followed Red with my head down after we left his room. I was careful not to make a sound since he didn't want his parents to know I was with him. It hurts me, but I have to set aside everything I felt for the sake of my mission.

I needed to stay strong to get a sample of my father's hair. That is what I need to get back everything they stole from me, including the luxury I used to enjoy.

"What the heck, Destiny?" He asked as I slammed into his back when he abruptly stopped walking.

"I am sorry," I replied in more than a whisper.

"You should watch your step. I told you to keep your head down as much as possible, but you can't be clumsy." He answered with disappointment.

"I don't think the maids would tell my dad if they saw me, they all loved me, Red. I am sure they are loyal to me since my father didn't have time to talk to any maids, but I talked to them occasionally. I considered them part of the household and not just maids." I responded, and he looked at me with dismay.

"Destiny, Carmen fired all the old maids and hired new ones." He replied, and I couldn't believe Dad allowed it to happen because my mom chose them with expertise.

"How could she do that? She has no right to fire them; they have family to feed." I proclaimed with anger.

"It was done. The mansion staff were all new and had good credentials." Red answered, and I knew he would side with his girlfriend's mother.

"Carmen said she needed to change all the maids since they reminded Alejandro about your mother's infidelity, and he wanted to forget all about Amalia." He added, and I was curling my fists on my side.

"We need to get going, and no talking," Red continued with finality, and I shut my mouth with obedience, afraid he would change his mind and call it a night.

The evening breeze tickled my skin as we walked towards my father's house. It was a long walk if we hadn't taken the shortcut. As expected, Red brought me through the back door.

My heart was hammering as we got inside. Obscure lighting radiated in the hallways as we navigated inside the house. I felt glad no one was around.

Red suddenly stopped, and I could hear the loud pounding of my heart against my chest as he held my wrist and grabbed me with him as he got inside to the nearest room. It was so dark that we almost stumbled into the wall.

He switched on the light, and I realized we were inside the powder room near the living room.

"What is the matter, Red?" I asked after he gently closed the door, and we stood facing so close to each other that I could hear his calm breathing.

"I think your father is in the living room." He responded in a calm voice.

"You should stay here," he said without moving an inch, and my body suddenly turned so hot as I found his gaze zeroed on my lips, and I hated that I unintentionally bit my lower lip.

"Don't ever come out unless I say so," he added as he turned away and hurriedly left while I slowly sat on the floor, making an effort to control the racing of my heart.

I am here with a different mission and not to get back with my ex.

I was waiting for Red to return to the powder room, and I started feeling worried when he didn't return after several minutes. He left me for almost one hour already, and even if I knew the maids would never use the powder room, I couldn't stop worrying if someone would find me.

And if what Red had said was true, none of the new maids recognized me, and I am sure if one of them saw me, she would think I was a burglar.

When I almost dozed off, the door suddenly swung open, and I saw Red's head peeking on the door.

"It is now safe to come out, Destiny." He said, and I hastily got up and came after him as he took the stairs and walked towards my dad's room.

He gradually opened the wooden door, and I held my breath as I got inside. My heart sank when I saw my dad's room. Everything changed, including the portrait on the wall.

He was peacefully sleeping on his immense bed with a white bed cover, and I wanted to come to his side and hug him, but I hated him for taking out my picture frame on top of his side table.

"What are you waiting for, Destiny?" Red asked, feeling annoyed, and I didn't know he was standing close to me.

"What if he will wake up?" I asked in a whisper.

"No, he won't wake up for at least six to eight hours," he answered, and I turned my head and stared at him.

"What have you done?" I asked, and his face darkened.

"I am just helping you; now move!" He answered in a loud voice, and I suddenly panicked, but my father didn't open his eyes nor move his limbs, and as I walked closer to him, I realized he was soundly sleeping.

I sat on the edge of the bed facing him, and a single tear escaped my eye as I stared at my dad. I couldn't stop my emotion. I missed my father, even if I hated him for choosing Carmen and Carie over me.

"You must hurry, Destiny. I still have to take you back home," Red said with a booming voice, not caring if he would wake up my father.

With trembling hands, I pluck a strand of hair from my father's head, and my body freezes when he groans. I quickly stood on the side of the bed as I stared at my dad's sleeping figure.

"Destiny," my legs quivered when I heard my father's voice calling my name, and my nervousness slowly subsided when he didn't open his eyes or move any part of his body. My dad was dreaming about me.

I didn't know if I should feel happy or sad since I didn't know what his dream was all about.

"What did you do to my dad?" I asked after we returned to Red's room.

"What do you mean?" Red answered me with a question.

"You said he had sleeping problems, but why was he sleeping soundly?" I asked.

"Why are you asking so many questions, Destiny? I already helped you; you have the sample now; you should be thankful and shut your mouth." Red responded with bitterness, and I wondered why he turned into this kind of man.

Red used to be so sweet and polite and never insulted me. Aside from that, he didn't quickly get angry with anything, but now, he always looked agitated and ready to pick a fight with me.

"Thank you, Red; you don't need to be a jerk." I snapped, and his face turned red.

"You should change now, and I am sorry, I can't drive you back to your place." He said, and my face fell.

"How am I supposed to get home at this hour, Red?" I asked, unable to believe he had suddenly cut off our deal.

"Who said you are going home tonight? You are right; it is late, and you should stay for the night." He answered, and my eyes turned so big as saucers as I looked at him, astounded by what he said.

"I will be sleeping in the guest room while you sleep here in my room." He said as he pivoted, but then he turned around and looked at me, shaking his head.

"It will not do; we must sleep in the same room to avoid complications. Don't worry, I will be sleeping on the sofa." Red added before I could say anything and rummaged into his closet.

"You can have a shower now and wear this," he added as he put his loose t-shirt over my shoulder before he spun around and collapsed on the sofa while I was left standing in the center of his room, trying to process everything.
