Charlotte began to tell me about the world around me, using this is an extension of learning new words from the outside. Although it took a while for me to fully understand, she told me about how the world we live in is actually technically two separate worlds. Firstly, the world where we are in now, the world that originally had now magic, nor beings like Charlotte, just simple humans. Then there's the second world that opened up to this world, where people like Charlotte come from. Vampires, demons, and a wide variety of demi-humans. Even the humans in that world possessed magic unlike the humans in this world.
Apparently, a war ensued between the worlds, but soon afterwards, they worlds came together by a group of individuals, essentially the mediators between the worlds. Nearly a hundred years have passed since then, leading to where we are now. Laws surrounding magic was enforced, leading to a more peaceful cohabitation between everyone.
"So then- why am I here?" I ask after seeing Charlotte finally stopping her story.
"Well you would think you were born in the other world, but you were actually born here."
"In the white room?"
"Hehe, no no. But you were taken in soon after your birth, so you were raised here... In a sense." Her words trailed off towards the end there, but I managed to pick up on it just fine.
"Why?"
"...Look, I'm not sure I'm meant to be telling you this. The information has been shut out from the public." Her words only make me all the more curious. Just what happened to me? My past.
"Please..." I ask one more time for her to continue. But I make the decision in my mind that if she says no, I'll just drop it.
"Hahh~ Alright. To put it simply... Y-your parents died after your birth." I fall silent upon hearing her words, not knowing where to go from here. I'd like to ask how, but I get the feeling that Charlotte doesn't want to elaborate any further as the look on her face has turned quite dark, even turning her head to the side, looking away from me.
"Like I said earlier, your father was a vampire, but your mother's origins are unknown. All we know is that you're a cross breed, a hybrid."
"A hybrid?" Yet another new word, and a word that has to do with me no less...
"Yes. They're exceedingly rare, only about 11 others like you were ever born."
"Like me?" As in there's 11 more people that has to wear masks to not kill?
"Well, not to your extent. Hybrids do pose quite a threat, but so far there have been no issues." In other words, I'm an exception? Is it because I killed those people in the white room? It's not that I wanted to do that!
"Shiro..." Charlotte places her hand on my shoulder as I feel the warmth from her hand slowly spread around my skin. "I know what you may be thinking, but I know it's not your fault. It's why you were put here; for people to study you. Your existence is the first of it's kind, which is why everyone's trying to be careful."
"Is that why those people come and take my limbs?"
"Yes. But do understand that your sacrifice has saved countless people." Her words come as a shock to me. I was saving people? Why am I only hearing this now?
"Th-then why did you take me from the white room if you knew I was saving people?"
"..." She falls silent at my question as she once again averts her eyes from me. But after about ten seconds, just as I was about to break the silence with another question, "I just- couldn't stand watching you suffer like that anymore..." She answers in a feeble voice, stuttering for a moment between her sentence. "Ever since I came here, and started hearing your cries and screams... It wasn't what I signed up for."
"Charlotte..."
"So I worked hard to rise into the positioned I'm in now. And after many failures, I finally managed to get you out. Although with some conditions..." Again her words fall silent towards the end, but I still manage to hear them just fine.
"Conditions?"
"We'll talk about that later, okay?" For the first time during all of this talk, she shoots me a reassuring smile before I feel her hand gently pat my head, but for some reason I feel like her smile just now isn't like her other ones... "I still can't get over how white your hair is, hehe." Looks as though she really does want to drop the talk now as she's now focusing on patting my head. I don't really mind it, if anything it feels quite nice having her do this to me as I end up leaning into her hand unconsciously. I could honestly fall asleep like this if I wasn't sitting up in bed like this.
