Chapter 8 - Jilt

Jilt — suddenly reject or abandon (a lover)

As I wrapped up my shift one evening, Joy approached me with a hopeful gleam in her eyes. She was scheduled for a night shift, but her boyfriend, Porphy was unexpectedly in town, and she was desperate to see him.

"Miyah, please," Joy pleaded, her voice tinged with excitement. "I know I'm supposed to work tonight, but Porphy surprised me by coming into town, and I just can't pass up the chance to see him. Can you cover for me, please?"

I could see the longing in Joy's eyes, and I couldn't help but feel a surge of empathy. After all, love was a rare and precious thing, and I knew how much Porphy meant to her.

"Of course, Joy," I replied with a reassuring smile. "Go and enjoy your time with Porphy. I'll take care of your shift. Just let me know if you need anything."

Relief washed over Joy's face as she enveloped me in a tight hug. "Thank you, Miyah! You're the best!"

As Joy hurried off to reunite with Porphy, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of loneliness. While I was happy for Joy and her blossoming romance, I couldn't shake the feeling of longing for a love of my own. But for now, I pushed aside my own desires and focused on being there for my friend when she needed me the most.

As the night wore on and the hospital settled into a quiet rhythm, I seized the opportunity to seek out Dr. Avery. With a sense of determination, I made my way towards his office, intent on finally addressing the tension that had been brewing between us.

As I approached his door, ready to knock and demand answers, it swung open unexpectedly, revealing Dr. Torres emerging from within. Her appearance was tacky, her hair was dishevelled while she tried to fasten the top three buttons of her shirt which has apparently been undone. I couldn't help but notice the exposed cleavage and the smirk playing on her lips as she made eye contact with me before striding past without a word.

A surge of anger and confusion coursed through me as I watched her walk away, leaving me standing there in stunned silence. What was going on between Dr. Torres and Dr. Avery? And why did the bitch look like she just won a freaking lottery?

As I stormed into Dr. Avery's office, my frustration and confusion reached a boiling point. I couldn't shake the feeling of being constantly ignored and dismissed by him, and I was determined to finally get some answers.

"Dr. Avery," I began, my voice trembling with emotion, "what's been going on between us? Why have you been avoiding me? Every time I try to talk to you, you shut me out. I deserve an explanation."

In the dimly lit room, Dr. Avery's expression remained unreadable as he regarded me, his eyes betraying no emotion. "Sometimes, no response is also a response," he said calmly, his words carrying a weight that hung in the air.

The pang of hurt pierced through me at his words, the weight of his silence sinking in deeper. "But why?" I pressed, my voice barely above a whisper, betraying the hurt and confusion swirling inside me. "What have I done to deserve this?" My words hung in the air, pleading for an explanation, for any shred of understanding in the midst of the overwhelming silence that enveloped us.

"There are things you don't know."

Before I could respond, he dropped the bombshell that shattered my world into a million pieces. "Dr. Torres is my fiancée," he confessed, his voice barely audible. "We're getting married next weekend. Whatever happened between you and I was a huge mistake. You're my student, and I intend to keep things that way. Leave my office now, Ms. Anderson."

The words hung in the air like a heavy weight, crushing me with their implications. Dr. Torres, the woman I had clashed with, the woman whose presence seemed to cast a shadow over everything, was not just a colleague—she was Dr. Avery's fiancée.

As the reality of his confession sank in, I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. All this time, while I had been struggling with my feelings for him, he had been engaged to someone else. The realization left me reeling, my heart shattered into a million irreparable pieces.

Tears blurred my vision as I turned and left Dr. Avery's office, the weight of his words weighing me down like a leaden anchor.
