Chapter 22 - True Intentions Revealed

Paula and Maya moved swiftly through the wreckage, their breaths quick and shallow as they navigated the unstable terrain. The subterranean complex continued to crumble around them, but their focus remained unshaken—rescuing Elias was their top priority. The air was thick with dust and the acrid smell of burning circuits, making it difficult to see or breathe.

Paula paused, scanning the area for any signs of Elias. Her heart raced as she spotted a faint movement beneath a pile of twisted metal.

— There! — she shouted, rushing forward with Maya close behind.

Elias lay pinned under a heavy beam, his face pale but determined. He managed a weak smile as they approached.

— Took you long enough, — he joked, wincing in pain.

— Hang in there, — Paula replied, her voice steady. — We'll get you out.

Maya activated a portable hydraulic lift, sliding it carefully under the beam. With a whirr of machinery, the lift began to raise the metal, freeing Elias. Paula helped him to his feet, supporting his weight.

— Can you walk? — Maya asked, her eyes scanning the area for any additional threats.

— I think so, — Elias replied, leaning heavily on Paula. — Let's get out of here.

They moved as quickly as they could, the structure groaning ominously above them. The hallway leading out was partially blocked, but they squeezed through the narrow gap, finally emerging into a wider tunnel illuminated by emergency lights. The low, red glow cast eerie shadows on the walls, making the environment even more unsettling.

Their destination was a small, hidden alcove within the tunnels where they could regroup and plan their next move. As they drew nearer, the alcove came into view, a slight indentation in the rocky walls that provided a temporary refuge. Relief washed over them, but it was short-lived.

A sudden burst of movement caught Maya's eye. She spun around, her blaster ready. Several drones, smaller but more agile than the ones they had encountered inside, were closing in fast.

— Drones incoming! — she shouted.

Paula tightened her grip on Elias, pulling him towards the alcove.

— Get him to safety! I'll cover you! — Maya ordered.

Paula acknowledged, half-dragging, half-carrying Elias the remaining distance. Maya stood her ground, her blaster firing precise shots that took down two of the drones. But more kept coming. Paula pushed Elias into the alcove, turning back to help Maya.

Maya's blaster overheated, forcing her to switch to her sidearm. The drones were relentless, their movements erratic and hard to predict. Paula joined the fray, her own blaster cutting through the swarm. Together, they managed to clear a path and retreat into the alcove.

— We can't stay here long, — Maya panted, wiping sweat from her brow. — They'll keep coming.

— Agreed, — Paula replied, catching her breath. — We need to move and find a more secure location.

Meanwhile, Jaxon, Nina, and Liam pressed on towards the southern sector of the subterranean complex, their journey marked by silence and determination. The remote outpost within Deimos was their final hope for securing the remaining data needed to restore Nate.

The labyrinthine tunnels stretched out before them, a desolate maze of gray and black. The trio moved with purpose, their suits equipped with enhanced mobility systems that allowed them to navigate the complex terrain quickly. The tunnels were a haunting blend of narrow passages and vast, echoing chambers, illuminated by the occasional flicker of failing lights.

— How's everyone holding up? — Jaxon asked, breaking the silence.

— We're good, — Liam replied, his eyes scanning the dark passages.

Nina indicated her agreement, her medical bag secured tightly to her side. The outpost soon came into view, a small, fortified structure nestled within the maze. Jaxon checked his scanner, confirming their target.

— There it is, — he said. — Let's move.

They approached the outpost cautiously, aware that it could be guarded or booby-trapped. Liam took point, his blaster at the ready. The entrance was sealed, but Elias had provided them with access codes before they split up.

— I've got it, — Liam said, entering the codes into the keypad.

The door slid open with a hiss, revealing a dimly lit interior. They slipped inside, their eyes adjusting to the low light. The outpost was small but packed with advanced equipment, including the server they needed. The walls were lined with monitors and control panels, their screens flickering with streams of data.

— Nina, start the extraction, — Jaxon ordered. — Liam, cover us.

Nina quickly connected her device to the server, the interface lighting up as she initiated the data transfer. Jaxon and Liam stood guard, their senses heightened for any signs of danger. The hum of the servers filled the room, a constant reminder of the high stakes.

— How's it going? — Jaxon asked, glancing at Nina.

— Almost there, — she replied, her fingers flying over the keyboard.

The tension in the room was palpable as they waited. Finally, Nina gave a sign of satisfaction.

— Data secured. Let's get out of here.

They moved swiftly, exiting the outpost and making their way back through the labyrinthine tunnels. The mission was almost complete, but they knew the real challenge lay ahead—reuniting with Paula, Maya, and Elias, and fully restoring Nate.

As they trekked back, the silence of the complex felt both oppressive and liberating. Every step brought them closer to their goal, but also deeper into potential danger. The stark, monochromatic environment seemed to stretch on forever, a constant reminder of their isolation.

— Let's hope the others are safe, — Jaxon said, a note of concern in his voice.

---

As they prepared to move out, Elias suddenly produced a gun, pointing it at Paula and Maya. Shock and disbelief flashed across their faces.

— What are you doing? — Paula demanded, her voice barely more than a whisper.

— I'm sorry, — Elias said, his expression cold and detached. — But I can't let you leave. There's too much at stake.

Maya moved instinctively, placing herself between Paula and the gun.

— Elias, put the gun down, — she urged. — We can talk about this.

Elias shook his head, his grip tightening on the weapon.

— No, we can't, — he replied. — You don't understand. This isn't just about us. There are bigger forces at play, and I have orders to follow.

Paula and Maya exchanged a glance, the realization of betrayal sinking in. They had saved him, trusted him, and now he was turning on them.

In a swift, calculated move, Maya lunged at Elias, attempting to disarm him. A shot rang out, echoing through the tunnel. Paula felt a searing pain in her shoulder as she fell back, clutching the wound.

Maya wrestled with Elias, their struggle a desperate dance of survival. The gun clattered to the floor, and Maya managed to subdue Elias, pinning him down.

— Why, Elias? — she demanded, breathing heavily.

Elias looked up at her, his eyes filled with a strange mix of regret and determination.

— Because, — he whispered, — they woke me up last night and gave me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Maya's heart sank. She and Paula exchanged a glance, the same thought flashing through their minds: the mysterious entity, the flashing being, must have gotten to him. But how?

Paula, wincing in pain, staggered to her feet.
