Chapter 28 - The Collapse

Paula and Elias moved cautiously through the dimly lit corridors of Rangar, their senses on high alert. Aria Shaw walked between them, her steps tentative as she adjusted to the newfound clarity after the removal of her mental block. They had one objective now: reunite with Jaxon and the rest of their team.

Paula noticed the tension in Aria's posture. She glanced at Elias, who nodded subtly in understanding. They needed to address any potential risks Aria might pose due to her recent ordeal.

— Aria, how are you holding up? — Paula asked, keeping her voice low to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

Aria took a deep breath, her eyes flickering with determination. — I'll be fine. We need to focus on stopping this threat.

They moved on, aware of the urgent timeline. Their path was clear until they reached a wide, open area where the sounds of approaching footsteps echoed ominously. Paula signaled for silence, and they hid behind a stack of crates.

A group of soldiers, led by a stern-faced lieutenant, marched into view. Paula recognized them as Aria's loyal followers. They seemed agitated, exchanging hurried whispers and scanning the surroundings with suspicion.

Paula's heart sank. She knew these soldiers were likely searching for Jaxon and the team, still under orders that now contradicted their mission. Aria stepped forward, her presence commanding immediate attention.

— Lieutenant, — Aria called out, her voice firm. — Stand down.

The soldiers stopped abruptly, confusion and recognition mixing on their faces. The lieutenant stepped forward, his expression hardening. — Commander Shaw, we received orders to secure the facility and eliminate any intruders.

— Those orders are void, — Aria replied, stepping closer. — We have a new mission now. We must stop the being controlling us and protect Rangar.

The lieutenant hesitated, his eyes narrowing. — Commander, with all due respect, how can we trust these new orders? We've been manipulated before.

Aria's expression softened, but there was a steel edge to her voice. — Because I am your commander, and I have regained my clarity. You must trust me now, as you did before.

The soldiers exchanged uncertain glances, but before they could respond, a shimmering figure materialized behind them. The being clignotant, its form flickering with eerie light, raised a hand, and a wave of energy pulsed outward.

The soldiers' eyes glazed over, their bodies stiffening. Paula and Elias watched in horror as the soldiers' expressions turned blank, their minds clearly overwhelmed by the being's influence.

Aria's eyes widened in realization. — No... it has already corrupted them.

The being turned its gaze towards Aria, Paula, and Elias, its eyes glowing with malevolent intent. It spoke, its voice echoing within their minds. — You cannot escape my control. Surrender now.

Elias stepped forward, his hand on his weapon. — We won't let you win.

The being's form flickered, its laughter echoing through the corridor. — You are but insects before my power.

Paula grabbed Aria's arm, pulling her back. — We need to find Jaxon and regroup. We can't fight it alone.

Aria nodded, her face pale but resolute. — Let's move.

They turned and sprinted down the corridor, the sounds of pursuit growing louder behind them. The soldiers, now under the being's control, chased them with mechanical precision.

Navigating through the twisting passageways, they finally reached a secure door. Elias quickly hacked the control panel, and the door slid open just as the controlled soldiers rounded the corner.

— Inside, now! — Elias shouted.

They dashed through the door, slamming it shut behind them. Elias locked it, buying them precious moments. Paula activated her communicator. — Jaxon, come in. We're pinned down near sector seven. We need backup.

Jaxon's voice crackled through the device. — We're on our way. Hold tight.

As they waited, the sounds of the soldiers' relentless attempts to break through the door grew louder. Aria leaned against the wall, her face etched with guilt.

— I should have known it would come to this, — she whispered.

Paula placed a hand on her shoulder. — It's not your fault. We'll get through this, together.

Suddenly, the ground beneath them shook violently, followed by a series of loud explosions. The walls trembled, and debris rained down from the ceiling. Paula's eyes widened in alarm.

— What was that? — Elias asked, his voice tense.

Aria's face paled further. — Explosives. They must have detonated in several habitation sectors.

Paula's heart sank. — We have to hurry. The city is collapsing. We need to get out of here!

Moments later, the door burst open, and Jaxon, Nate, and the rest of the team stormed in, weapons at the ready. They quickly subdued the controlled soldiers, securing the area.

— All the workers in the habitation sections have been evacuated to warehouses on the surface of Deimos, — Jaxon said, his face grim. — It's just us and a few soldiers left in Rangar.

Nate's holographic form flickered as he analyzed the situation. — The being can pass through walls. We need to keep moving.

Jaxon motioned for them to follow. — We need to return to our hidden room. It might be our best chance to regroup and plan.

The team moved swiftly through the crumbling corridors, finally reaching an unassuming panel in the wall. Jaxon pressed a hidden switch, and the panel slid open, revealing a concealed entrance.

— Inside, quickly, — Jaxon urged.

They filed into the hidden room, a well-fortified space equipped with advanced technology, durable supplies, and private boxes meticulously organized along the walls. The room was designed with reinforced steel panels, ensuring maximum protection against external threats. Shelves lined with various materials—tools, weapons, medical supplies, and rations—ensured the team could sustain themselves during prolonged sieges. Each private box bore the name of a team member, containing personal items and essential equipment customized to their needs. The room's center featured a large table with integrated holographic displays and control panels, creating a command center for strategic planning and data analysis.

Elias began accessing the room's systems. — I'll start downloading all data we have on the being's technology and weaponry. We need to understand what we're up against.

— I downloaded all current research onto a hard disk, says Nate, but some of the data was stored on systems that were not connected to the network. Those needed to be downloaded directly from the laboratory. Someone would have to go there and connect me to the disks inside the laboratory.

Jaxon looked at the team, a steely resolve in his eyes. — We need to split up. Two of us will go to the laboratory to connect Nate to those disks, and the rest will head to the surface and secure the ship.

Paula nodded. — Jaxon, you and Maya go to the lab. We'll head to the surface and prepare the ship for departure.

— Good, — Jaxon agreed. — Stay safe, everyone.

The team quickly gathered their gear and set off on their respective missions, aware of the dangers that lay ahead. As Jaxon and Maya moved towards the lab, they could hear the distant sounds of structural collapses and the haunting echoes of the being's influence. Meanwhile, Aria, Paula, Elias, Liam, and Nina headed to the surface, ready to secure Jaxon's ship and prepare for the next phase of their mission.
