Chapter 31 - The Rising Haven on Deimos

Jaxon, Maya, and their team advanced quickly through the partially corrupted warehouses, their weapons ready to disable the controlled workers without causing severe harm. With every step, the synchronized and dehumanized movements of the workers under the entity's influence heightened the tension.

Maya, focused, checked her scanner.

— The influence signals are stronger to the west. The entity must have some kind of anchor point there.

Jaxon nodded, his gaze scanning the surroundings.

— Then that's where we need to go. Prepare for heavy resistance.

Meanwhile, aboard the ship, Paula monitored the tactical readings provided by Nate. Though still fragmented, the AI had managed to extrapolate the entity's control patterns.

— Paula, — Nate said, his voice more mechanical than usual, — I'm detecting an unusual concentration of energy in the western section of the warehouses. This could be a direct emanation from the entity.

Paula turned to the standby reinforcements aboard the ship.

— Get ready to deploy. If Jaxon can't neutralize that anchor point, we'll have to step in.

In the warehouses, Maya crouched near an abandoned terminal, her fingers dancing across the keyboard.

— I'm trying to access the system to disable the security locks on the western doors. If the entity's there, it's blocking us from getting in easily.

Jaxon and Liam covered the area while she worked. Controlled workers were regrouping at the far end of the room, their coordinated movements betraying malicious intent.

— Maya, hurry, — Jaxon murmured, finger on the trigger.

— Almost there… and done! — Maya called out as the doors creaked open with a metallic groan.

The team rushed into the next section, where a pulsating light shone at the center of the warehouse. The flickering entity, larger than ever, appeared to be weaving threads of energy from the corrupted workers. It slowly turned, as if perceiving their arrival.

— You will not stop the inevitable, — a cold, synthetic voice echoed in their minds.

Elias, who had stayed behind to monitor the technical equipment, shouted over the communicator:

— Jaxon, don't let it weave those connections! Each thread strengthens its hold.

— Understood, — Jaxon replied, raising his weapon. — Team, focus fire on those threads!

The team's precise shots severed the energy connections, creating flashes of light and disembodied cries that echoed throughout the warehouse. But each destroyed thread triggered an immediate retaliation from the entity. Waves of energy rippled outward, disorienting the team and slowing their movements.

Maya quickly placed a small emitter on the ground and adjusted its settings.

— Jaxon, I need a minute to activate a targeted pulse!

— We've got you covered! — Jaxon replied, firing in bursts to keep the workers at bay.

Aboard the ship, Nate frantically analyzed the data.

— Paula, the entity's energy structure shows vulnerabilities around its central core. If the team can reach it, they could disable its anchor point.

Paula nodded, her expression resolute.

— Contact Jaxon. They must target that core at all costs.

In the warehouse, the flickering entity began to move, its glow intensifying. Controlled workers charged at the team, forcing Jaxon and Liam into hand-to-hand combat. Nina administered antidote injectors to fallen workers, restoring their autonomy.

— Maya, hurry up! — Jaxon shouted as he pushed back an attacker.

— Pulse is ready! — she yelled, slamming the detonator.

A powerful electromagnetic wave spread through the room, severing the entity's connections and freeing most of the workers. But while weakened, the entity was not destroyed.

— It's now or never, — Jaxon declared. — Liam, cover me. Maya, stay with Nina and secure the injured.

Jaxon charged toward the entity's core, dodging bursts of energy swirling around it. Reaching the center, he planted a hastily designed annihilation device from Elias.

— Nate, activate it! — Jaxon shouted.

— Device armed, — Nate replied calmly. — Evacuate immediately.

The team retreated quickly toward the entrance, carrying the injured as the entity convulsed, its energy rapidly disintegrating. A silent explosion filled the warehouse, and the entity vanished in a burst of light.

Back on the ship, the team collapsed in exhaustion, the weight of their mission still heavy despite their victory. As Nate analyzed the remaining data, Paula, Jaxon, and Aria gathered in the command room to discuss their next steps.

— We destroyed its anchor here, — Paula said, looking at the hologram of the now-silent warehouses. — But the entity isn't completely eradicated. If we want to defeat it, we need to be better prepared.

Aria straightened her shoulders and spoke firmly.

— The first thing we need to do is reorganize. The workers and soldiers need a refuge, and if we're going to move forward, we must build a solid base here on Deimos's surface.

Jaxon frowned, considering the idea.

— A sort of temporary village? Using the existing buildings as shelters?

Aria nodded.

— Exactly. There are enough viable structures here to house the workers and soldiers, and we can reinforce them to protect against further attacks. This will also give the workers a clear purpose. They can help fortify this place while we plan our next move.

— And you? — Jaxon asked. — What will you do?

Aria crossed her arms, her voice carrying newfound authority.

— I'll lead this village. I know these people. They need leadership, discipline, and hope. If we remain scattered, the entity will gain ground. If we unite, we stand a chance.

Paula agreed.

— We can divide our efforts. While Aria establishes this base, we'll analyze the data further and prepare for our next mission. The soldiers and workers will need time to recover in a safe environment.

Maya, who had been silent until now, added:

— There are also unused resources in the warehouses. With some work, we could set up a central generator and restore part of the energy systems. That would strengthen our defenses.

Jaxon turned to Nate, whose hologram flickered slightly.

— Nate, can you coordinate the fortification plans with Aria? If we're doing this, it needs to be effective and fast.

— Affirmative, — Nate replied. — The surface buildings have an architecture compatible with rapid modifications. I will map the weak points and suggest defensive placements.

A plan quickly took shape. Jaxon and Paula would organize the soldiers to secure the area, while Aria coordinated the workers to begin construction. Maya, Elias, and Nate would work together to restore critical infrastructure, including power and communications.

A few hours later, under Deimos's pale sky, the first signs of reconstruction began to appear. The workers, though tired, labored with newfound determination, while the soldiers set up guard posts around the buildings. Abandoned structures were swiftly transformed into dormitories, supply zones, and workshops.

Aria, standing on an improvised platform, addressed the gathered crowd.

— I know many of you have lost hope in recent days. But here, now, we have a chance to rebuild. This village we're creating isn't just a refuge. It's a declaration. We are not defeated. We will not be broken. We survived this threat, and we will fight it to the end.

Her words were met with quiet but sincere applause. The spirits of the team, as well as those of the workers and soldiers, seemed revitalized.

Later that evening, Jaxon stood on a high vantage point, watching the workers and soldiers settle into their new quarters. He felt a presence beside him and turned to see Paula.

— Not bad for a day, — she said with a faint smile.

— Not bad at all, — Jaxon replied, nodding. — Maybe we can actually hold out here, at least for a while.

Paula looked toward the village below, where flickering lights began piercing the darkness.

— With any luck, this moment will be enough for us to find our next step. And this time, we'll be ready.

Under Deimos's silent sky, a fragile hope was born in the heart of this fledgling village. But everyone knew it was only a reprieve before the next battle.
