When Emily woke up, she opened her eyes slowly, feeling a tear slip across her face. She remained still as she heard Alex calling her name. Through the corner of her eye, she saw Alex sitting beside her bed, IV bags hanging above him. After a moment, she opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Taking a deep breath, she finally asked, "When?"
"About three years ago," Alex replied softly.
"What date?" Emily asked, still lying motionless, staring at the ceiling as tears continued to stream down her face.
"It's Christmas Eve. She had a heart attack. By the time the ambulance arrived at the hospital, it was too late," Alex said slowly. Hearing this, Emily closed her eyes again and let tears run free through her eyes.
