Chapter 7 - The RKA planet

After what seems like hours of driving, the army vehicle finally stops in front of a large compound. We are escorted inside, where several other people join us, all apparently recruited for the same mysterious mission. We are directed to a large auditorium.

Once inside, we sit, waiting with some apprehension. On the stage, Colonel Kai enters. He looks imposing, his presence exuding unquestionable authority. The murmur of the room instantly silences when he speaks.

"Welcome, everyone," he begins, his voice echoing in the auditorium. "You have been chosen for a mission of the utmost importance and, as you know, extremely well paid. Your mission is to travel to the planet Rka and collect samples of three specific plants: the heaven plant, the corpse with six horns, and the poisonous one of the twilight."

A murmur of disbelief runs through the audience. A mission to another planet? The gravity of the task begins to settle in us. The colonel raises his hand to restore silence.

"I understand that this may seem surreal, but these plants are crucial for vital research. The samples you bring back could potentially save millions of lives. However, there are essential rules to follow once on Rka."

He pauses, looking at us one by one to make sure we understand the seriousness of the situation. "First, on this planet, the more beautiful it is, the more dangerous it is. Don't be fooled by the appearance of plants or creatures. Beauty often hides deadly traps."

I feel a chill run through the assembly. The colonel continues, imperturbable. "Second, never show that you are afraid. Fear is the hallmark of prey. On Rka, predators detect fear and use it to stalk their victims. Always be on guard and maintain your calm, no matter the situation."

I sit up instinctively, trying to hide my nervousness. The colonel then approaches the edge of the dais, his piercing gaze scanning the room. "Finally, be wary of what surrounds you. Rka is a living planet, where everything can become a threat. Plants, soil, even the air, can be hostile. Always remain vigilant."

The silence is total. The importance of the colonel's words weighs heavily on our shoulders. He continues: "You will be equipped with the necessary equipment and trained quickly before your departure. Each team will have an expert botanist and an experienced guide to maximize your chances of success. Never forget these rules, because they will be key to your survival. "

The colonel pauses, letting us digest his words. "Questions ?"

A hand rises timidly.

-Colonel, how long should the mission last?

-The time needed to collect the samples, he answers, but we estimate that it will take about two Earth weeks. Prepare for an extended stay.

With that, the Colonel steps down from the dais, indicating that we will now be divided into teams and given our equipment. As we stand to follow instructions, I glance at my new companions, Marc, Ambrose, and Darcy. Our eyes meet, and despite the palpable fear, there is a glimmer of determination in their eyes. We are ready, at least as much as possible, for what awaits us on Rka.
