Chereads / Distich Wolves Book 2 / Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

Back at James and Blair's house, James handed the phone to Ben defeated. "Well," Ben roared. "She didn't tell me where she is," he said quietly. "This is stupid, she's been gone two weeks," Ben yelled, Jen closed her eyes. "Ben, yelling isn't going to help," she told him softly. James walked over to the back windows that Blair loved to look out, "Who's Aileen?" Ben asked walking up behind him. "A girl in the pack," James told him. Ben pushed James' shoulder, "Is that who the fight was about?" Ben pushed. James pushed Ben back, "I dealt with it," James barked back. "Boys, this isn't helping Blair," Maggie chimed in. "What did you hear in the background?" Duncan asked. "A male voice calling her name, it wasn't anyone I recognized. He got her something with cheese," James answered, annoyed at the questioning. "Now that her phone is back on, why don't you track it?" Jen asked. James grabbed his phone off the counter and looked at the find my phone app and tapped Blair's phone, "It's off again," he told her. "But it should've pinged somewhere," Jen pushed. James looked again, "I don't," James looked at the map confused. "It'll ping to the nearest tower and then we can look at the packs around there," Jen explained rolling her eyes and grabbing the phone. "Do you have a map of the pack territories?" She asked. "Yeah, in my office," James replied leading them down the hall. "So, it looks like she near three packs, Blood Moon, Desert Moon, and," Jen said and paused. "Who?" Ben asked. Jen looked up from James' desk, "Red Creek," she stated knowing. "She's at Red Creek, Ben get your best warriors," James ordered as he and Ben tore down the hall. "Wait, boys," Maggie called. "Alpha's stop," Duncan yelled, causing James and Ben to stop and turn back. "You can't just go headfirst into the Red Creek territory, guns blazing," Duncan told them. "Tim's been after her for years," Ben replied. "Right and they haven't done anything to her. For all she knows she's been there happily for two weeks, so they're lying to her. If we strike now all the surrounding packs will believe the lies as well. We need to formulate a plan and get the other packs on our side, before we go in there," Duncan explained. Ben and James looked at each other defeated, they knew Duncan was right, but they didn't want him to be. They knew unless the alarm bells were raised by Blair, they couldn't make their case, Blair had to say she is being kept there against her will, or no one would help them.

After lunch Andy and Blair walked back to Andy's house, as they walked and talked Blair was becoming more and more comfortable with Andy and the pack. Everyone seemed so nice, with waves and "How are you?" As they walked back. As they reached the house, "I think I'll lay down before dinner," Blair said. "Of course," Andy replied with a smile. Blair started up the stairs, using the banister to guide her, "Blair," Andy said. Blair stopped on the third step and looked down at him, "I know this might be too much to ask, since your brother is so worried. The summer solstice is tomorrow is ending with a full moon this year, so we are throwing a huge celebration. I was wondering if you'd consider staying and accompanying me as my guest?" Andrew asked. Blair smiled, "I'd love too," Blair answered. Without thinking Andrew placed his hand on Blair's, "Thank you," he replied smiling back. They stayed like that for a moment, before they realized they were just standing there staring, "I'll come get you when dinner is ready," Andy said clearing his throat. "Thank you," Blair said and hurried up to the guest room she was in. Blair felt conflicted, she was angry with James, but she didn't understand why Ben thought she had been missing for two weeks. Blair remembered she wanted her ceremony at the gazebo outside so everyone could be there. They must've moved it inside because of the rain, but why did Ben say it wasn't raining? Was she starting to have feelings for Andrew? She shouldn't be, she was claimed and marked, it was impossible. Blair thought about turning her phone back on to call Jen, but she would just say the same thing as Ben. Blair decided to call Beth and see what she had to say. "Hello? Blair?" Beth said frantically. "Hey," Blair replied hesitantly. "Are you ok?" Beth asked. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little confused," Blair answered with a pause. "Beth, are you near Ben or James?" Blair asked. "No, why? What's going on? Do you need them?" She asked. "No, I just," Blair paused again. "I'm really confused, Ben said I've been missing for two weeks," Blair began but Beth interrupted. "You went missing the night of your ceremony, which was June first, it was a Friday," Beth explained. "Yes," Blair answered. "It's now Tuesday June twentieth," Beth told her trying to get her to connect the dots. Blair thought about it, Andrew said the summer solstice was the day after tomorrow, that would be the twenty first. "Beth, what happened to me for two weeks?" Blair asked. "I don't know, but we are all worried," Beth answered. "Blair dinner's ready," Andy's voice rang out behind the door. "I'll be right there," Blair called back. "Blair?" Beth called frantic. "It's dinner, I have to go," Blair began. "No Blair don't hang up," Beth yelled. "I'll call you later, I'm fine," Blair assured her. "No Blair you don't know," Beth began but the phone went dead.

Beth sat on the couch upset, "I'm sorry," she repeated. "It's not your fault," Jen said, her arms around Beth, rubbing her arms. "Did she say anything about why they want her?" James asked. "No, but she seemed to understand she's missing time. She asked me what happened to her for those two weeks," Beth explained. "So, for all we know, Red Creek could've actually saved her," Jen pleaded against the anger Ben and James were putting off. "Tim doesn't save people who don't serve a purpose," Ben snapped. "She said she would call me later and that she was fine," Beth relayed. "They are working overtime to make sure she doesn't feel threatened," Duncan advised, his pacing son. "Why?" James said stopping to look at his father. "Are you sure every member of the council including Simone, was killed?" Ben asked. "I was focused on Blair, I can't say for sure," James answered turning to look at him, rubbing the back of his head. "If there's even a chance Simone made it out, she's keeping Blair to lure me in," Ben told him. James headed for the door, "Where are you going?" Maggie asked. "I need to ask Erik if everyone was killed," he answered not looking at them. "I'll go with you," Ben said following. Duncan squeezed his wife's hand and followed the boys to James' car, where James peeled out heading towards Erik's house in town.

He didn't pay any attention to what time it was or think what Erik might be doing he just pounded on his door and waited. Erik had been running recon missions at night since Blair had gone missing, he was half asleep and still groggy when he answered the door to see two Alpha's and a former Alpha standing outside his door. "Come in," he said alarmed. "Can you confirm everyone including Simone died in that field," James asked. Erik thought for a minute, "No, I can't," he said, sounding beaten down. "So, it's possible Simone got away?" James interrogated. "No, I killed her myself. She's dead," Erik answered confidently. "Alright lad, we believe you. We are just tryin to get to the bottom of this mess," Duncan told him patting his shoulder. "She's in the Red Creek pack," James informed him, almost exhausted. "Why aren't we there, rescuing her?" Erik asked as James sat down. "They aren't holding her against her will," Ben answered sitting in an old blue armchair, opposite of a disheveled James. "I don't understand," Erik replied. "Aye boy, neither do we," Duncan told him. James rolled his bottom lip between his thumb and first finger, thinking. Blair's laugh echoed in his head. He was on the verge of tears and the other men could see that, "James, we should go home, and you should get some rest," Duncan urged, feeling helpless to do something for his son. "I can't sleep, she's out there with someone else," he stated a crack in his voice. James sniffled and stood clearing his throat, trying to bury the emotion he let slip out. "We need to talk to Elder Wallace and Elder Tomas, maybe they can figure out what's going on," James ordered and headed back out to his car. "Let me know if there's anything I can do," Erik told Ben and Duncan as they walked out, they nodded and got in the car. James drove them back to his house and didn't wait for them, he walked in and went straight to his room, and shut the door with a loud thud. Maggie jumped up and looked out the door as Ben and Duncan came in. Duncan shook his head, Maggie let out a beaten breath and looked at the ground. No one knew what to do or how to help, they felt worthless as they watched James go through this alone. They were at a loss to help, James let out an exhausted and heart wrenching howl. Maggie's mouth dropped open as she stared down the hall, pain all over her face, Jen closed her eyes wishing there was something she could do to reach her friend. Ben and Duncan hung their heads, not able to imagine the agony James was going through.
