Ambulance leaves the scene. Officers tell the neighbors that there is nothing to see, and send them back to their homes. The situation calms down. Sheriff Stabler go to the witness's house, right next to the Johansen house. The officer is accompanied by rookie cop Butter, a big guy of nearly six feet and few brains who makes up for his shortcomings with hard work, and in that situation with unexpectedly fine penmanship to take down every word of the witness.
"Of course, sheriff, I repeat" says the middle-aged man, beer belly, and incipient baldness. "About an hour ago I started preparing dinner while my wife set the table. My little boy went out to play with his new basketball, and accidentally broke Mr. Johansen's window"
