CHAPTER 4
Maria got up early in the morning, pack her brown hair up into a messy bun, added a little bit of makeup on her face. Wore her work clothes and then left for work.
Driving down the busy road, she drove to a stop at a red traffic light. While waiting for the light to turn green, she looked at her face in the rearview mirror, checking to see if her make up was still intact.
Then the traffic light turned green and the cars began to move at a steady place. She got to the front of the City's police department and parked at the parking lot.
Her destination was heading to the Sergeant Peters office to drop the report that she managed to acquire from the research that she did.
She greeted the two people at the desk with a smile on her face. She almost walked bumped into Anna who had a look of relief on her face when she saw her.
"Oh my God, Maria I thought that you weren't going to come to work today, I am happy that you are here. Also I have some cases to give to you..." Maria cut her off before she could finish.
"Anna can this wait, I need to report something to Sergeant Peters."
"Sergeant Peters?" Anna eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "What could you possible want to give to him?"
"Something important, I will talk to you later," she said walking running down the hall, leaving Anna more confused than before.
Maria knocked on the door to Peters office, a 'come in' could be heard from the other side. Maria opened up the door, and closed it behind her, she walked towards Mr Peters desk and placed the report that was documented and binded in a file on it.
Mr Peters, a man that is in his forties, looked at the file arching an eyebrow at Maria, wondering what could be inside the file.
"What is this?" He asked pointing to the file in question.
"Sir it's a report that I made about the death of Jeffery Stein."
"Your fiancee?" He asked folding his hands underneath his chin.
"Yes sir." She said abashed.
"What's in it?"
"Sir I did my research and discovered that the bite mark on Jefferey's shoulder, was deeper than what most wild animals would have done."
"And what wild animals are we talking about here?"
"Sir we are talking about, Bears, tigers, and lions here. The bite force of a bear isn't as deep as the one on Jefferey's neck and shoulder region."
"So what do you think must have killed him?" Mr Peters questioned sarcastically, Maria ignored it the sarcasm.
"Sir, I believe that it's a creature that is far beyond what majority of human beings are able to understand and see. I am of the belief that it was a werewolf that killed him."
There was silence, the silence was almost deafening. Then Mr Peters let out a laugh that cut through the silence.
"Wait. Hold on a minute? You want me to believe that you did your whole research just to discover that a fantasy creature exist? This has to one of the most funniest things I ha e ever in my life heard." He bursted out into a loud cackle.
Maria felt a blush creep up to her cheeks, due to embarrassment but she wasn't planning on stepping back.
"Sir, I can assure that my findings are one hundred percent accurate."
"Uh-huh, now you want me to believe that werewolves exist. So what else exist huh? Vampires? Faires? Elves?"
Maria didn't speak again, her voice failed her. She should have known that this was a bad idea telling him.
His face took a serious look, one of concern this time around. "Look, Maria I know that your fiancee's death affected you badly but you can't just believe all this fable that you got from the internet."
"Sir if you won't believe me, I would take my business to the Chief."
"She won't even answer you," he scoffed. "She would literally chase you away and call you a delusional person."
"At least she won't laugh at me." Maria took her file and head for the office of the Chief of the police department. She also told her the same thing, while adding that she needs to focus on her job, not flimsy things like this.
Maria wanted to obey them, she really did. But however she was more obliged to listen to her gut instinct more than the voices/advices of her superiors.
She sat down on the chair of her office. Her mind has been made up, the only mistake she made was telling those two things like this.
There was a knock on the door, and in came Anna, Maria took a good look at her and realize that she had dyed her hair. it was orange color that actually suits her.
"So... How did it go?" She asked taking a seat on the visitors chair.
"It didn't go well." Maria answered honestly.
"Bummer. But what exactly was the thing about, you can tell me. Maybe I can help," she said enthusiastically.
Maria leaned in a bit closer, and said:, "if I tell you this, promise me that you wouldn't laugh?"
"I promise that I won't laugh."
"I believe that Jefferey's death was caused by some random wild animal."
"What do you think caused his death?"
"A Werewolf."
Anna looked at Maria, then let out a sigh. "Maria, please don't tell this is what you told Sergeant Peters?"
"Yes and laughed at me when I said it."
"Cause it sounds ridiculous, what even made you come to this conclusion?"
Maria opened her mouth about to talk, then she closed it again. She was tired of talking, if they don't want to believe her, then she might as well not talk anymore.
"You know what forget it," she said waving her hand dismissively.
"Look, I know that you are going through a lot right now, but I promise you that time would most definitely heal all these wounds. In the next few months things would get better, ok." Anna stood up and head for the door, opening it and stepping outside leaving Maria to her thoughts.
Irrespective of whatever it was that they were saying, Maria had already made up her mind and she was going to act on.
So that night she got herself ready, with protective clothing a flashlight, and her phone. She headed to the woods, that was heavily barricaded with barb wires and a huge sign that had 'Keep Off' written on it.
Her attention was on how to get past the barb wires, luckily she learnt how to pass through things when she was still training in the Police Academy, so it was going to be an easy task. It wasn't.
Trying to get through very sharp and pointy wires that could cause an injury on you, was a very terrible idea, her clothes were getting ripped to shreds and it looked like she was almost stuck.
However a miracle happened and she managed to fall down to the ground with a loud thud, which had a feeling alerted whatever it was that was going to kill her.
She stood up and dusted herself, turning on her flashlight, she slowly made her way to the silent and eerily forest. Trying her best not to make any noise.
There didn't seem to be anything for miles up ahead, just trees and shrubs.
She decided to go deeper into the forest, walking further from any form of civilization, anything that happens to her would remain there without anybody discovering her body.
But it was a risk–howbeit a stupid one–she was willing to take, for the sake of her investigation.
Then as if on cue, a low sounding came from behind her, making her stop in her tracks. The feeling in the atmosphere became one instilled with fear.
She slowly saw herself turning around and was faced with something that even she knows that can't face. She should have just obeyed her superiors.
