Chapter 4 - First Mission

Previous Chapter

"I didn't realize that practicing magic would be this complex even though magic does exist in this world and can be cast," he murmured, rubbing his forehead.

Of course, using magic isn't as simple as turning your palm. It requires a deep understanding of magic in this world and, more importantly, control over Mana in every use of magic.

Chapter Start

A few moments later, Andrian went to look for some fruit that he could take to eat and save some for his food stock. He was also thinking about how he could use magic in this world, considering that with this magic, it would be very easy for him to do things easily and efficiently.

According to the System's explanation, before he can use magic, he must first be able to access his Mana.

To access his Mana, there are several methods he can use. A simple example is meditating and focusing his mind to feel the energy within his body.

For now, it's better for him to focus on finding something he can eat. He will think about how to access his Mana later, after he gets some fruit or plants that he can eat and store.

Fortunately, this forest is very vast and food such as fruit is abundant here. However, Andrian also has to be careful in choosing the fruit he will eat.

He knows that not all the fruit in this forest is edible. Some might be poisonous and unfit for consumption because they have harmful effects.

Therefore, every time he picks fruit or plants in this forest, he will check them later after collecting everything at his hut.

-

After gathering enough, Andrian decided to return to his initial hut while carrying plenty of food such as fruits, vegetables, and plants. He also remembered to collect water from the river, which he would boil later in his hut to use as a drinking water supply. His current water supply was empty, and since yesterday, he had only been able to drink water from the river without boiling it first.

After arriving at his hut, Andrian began sorting the fruit he had collected earlier. There were some familiar fruits, similar to those in his previous world, such as apples, melons, and watermelons. However, there were also fruits and plants he did not recognize. This might be a bit dangerous because he didn't know whether the unfamiliar fruits were poisonous or not.

Therefore, Andrian planned to carefully test these unknown fruits and plants.

To test whether a fruit or plant is poisonous, there are several methods he could use.

First, Color and Shape: Plants or fruits with bright colors (red, bright yellow, or orange) often serve as a warning to animals (and humans) that they might be poisonous. However, there are also fruits with such bright colors that are not poisonous.

Second, Latex: Many poisonous plants exude white latex when their stems or leaves are broken.

Third, Strong Odor: Plants with a very strong or unpleasant smell are usually poisonous.

Therefore, Andrian began by performing these three checks before conducting further tests.

From the many fruits and plants he collected and tested, he identified only a few as poisonous and unsuitable for consumption. The rest he still couldn't identify because further testing was needed to determine the exact results.

Therefore, he started conducting further tests. First, the Touch Test. Andrian applied a part of the plant to his skin for a few minutes to see if there was any allergic reaction. If there was no reaction, he could proceed to the next stage, the Lip Test.

He placed a small part of the fruit or plant on his lips for a few minutes to test for any reaction. If there was still no reaction, he could move on to the next stage, the Chewing Test.

He chewed a small part of the plant but did not swallow it. He waited a few minutes to see if there was any reaction. If there was a reaction, the fruit or plant was poisonous. However, if there was no reaction, he could proceed to the final stage, the Swallow Test.

If there was still no negative reaction, he would try swallowing a small part of the fruit or plant and wait a few hours to ensure there were no side effects before eating it in larger quantities.

As a result, most of the fruits and plants he collected from the forest turned out to be consumable. Some of the plants could even be used as cooking spices because of their distinctive flavors.

"Maybe I'm very lucky this time because most of the fruits and plants I picked from the forest had no negative or poisonous effects," Andrian thought.

He also gained new information after conducting the tests; he now began to understand and recognize which fruits and plants to choose for eating and which to avoid.

There might still be many more fruits or plants in this forest that he hasn't discovered yet and doesn't know if they are poisonous or have negative effects, but he can search for them in the future to find out.

At that very moment, a notification from the System chimed.

A mission! Andrian was surprised by this because it was his first mission since the System first appeared.

Looking at the mission description he had to work on, Andrian thought he could do this because he also had the knowledge to make the mentioned tools.

The reward for this mission was also very appealing because not only did he get an Upgrade Point, but he also received a useful skill, the 'Blacksmith' skill. Andrian knew that this skill would be very useful, and if he could upgrade this skill to the master level, he could create various tools with the available materials.

Moreover, it turned out that there was also a bonus reward in every mission that would be given to him if he met the criteria stated in the description.

Furthermore, he could get a bonus of 1 Upgrade Point and also a Passive Skill 'Observation', which might help to enhance his observational skills.

Andrian nodded and said to the System, "Thank you for informing me about this mission, System," with a smile.

The System replied, "[It is my duty as the System to assist the Host as much as possible.]"

Andrian nodded upon hearing the System's response, and he began to plan to carry out the mission right away.

But before that, he would fill his stomach first by eating the fruits he had picked earlier because he was feeling hungry, and he hadn't eaten since yesterday.

Once he felt sufficiently full, Andrian began to carry out his mission to create tools such as an Axe, Spear, Animal Trap, and Water/Food Container.

Before that, he would search for the necessary materials to make these tools in the forest. With the knife he had made earlier, Andrian began to search for the required materials.

Starting with wood, branches with the required specifications, stones to be shaped accordingly, and so on. After gathering all the necessary materials, Andrian began making the Axe first.

He selected a sturdy wooden stick and a sharp stone as the main materials for the axe.

Carefully, he shaped the axe head by heating the stone over the fire and forming it into a suitable shape to be used as a cutting tool.

Then, once the axe head was well-formed, Andrian attached it to the end of the smoothed and reinforced wooden stick. With diligence and caution, he completed the making of the axe, ensuring that the axe head was securely and firmly attached.

After finishing making the axe, Andrian checked the strength and sharpness of the tool by testing it on some small pieces of wood. Satisfied with the result, he proceeded to make the next tool according to the specified specifications.

Next, Andrian made a spear with the materials he had gathered and prepared. First, he shaped the Spear Shaft. Andrian cut the wood into a length that matched the desired length for the spear shaft. Then, he smoothed the shaft by removing its bark and smoothing its surface for comfort during use.

Next, he made the Spear Tip. Andrian chose suitable material for the sharp spear tip. Since he used stone, he had to select a hard and sharp stone. Since he had prepared the material and it was also new even though he hadn't shaped it yet, he didn't need to bother finding the material again. Then he began shaping the stone by striking and carving it with another stone until he obtained a sharp and pointed shape. Andrian ensured the spear tip was sharp enough to penetrate and touch the target effectively.

Next, he attached the spear tip to a shaft. Andrian used strong vines to tie his spear tip to the wooden shaft. He had to ensure the bond was strong and sturdy so that the spear tip would not come loose when used later.

And the last step, he tested and corrected his spear. After making the spear, Andrian tested its effectiveness by stabbing and throwing it at the appropriate target. He also made corrections to the shaft or spear tip to improve its performance.

After finishing making the spear and testing his new tool, Andrian was satisfied with the result.

He also didn't forget to care for and maintain his spear. Andrian always made sure to regularly maintain his spear, including caring for the spear tip to keep it sharp and checking the bond between the spear tip and shaft periodically.

Next, Andrian will make an animal trap. This time, he will make a Fish Trap using bamboo.

Andrian began by selecting several sturdy bamboo stalks. He carefully split the bamboo stalks lengthwise, creating narrow strips that he would weave together to form the trap.

Using his knowledge of trap making, Andrian crafted a Fish Trap design that would effectively catch fish. He weaved the bamboo strips together, forming a funnel-shaped trap with an entrance for fish to swim into but not out of.

Once the trap was woven together, Andrian secured the seams with strong vines and knots to ensure the trap would hold together underwater.

Finally, Andrian tested the Fish Trap by placing it in a nearby stream. He patiently waited, and soon enough, he had successfully caught several fish using his ingeniously crafted trap. Satisfied with the results, Andrian moved on to the next task.

And finally, Andrian made a container for water and food. He used natural materials that he could find and utilize in this forest.

First, he will make a Water Container from natural materials. Andrian can make a container for storing water from natural materials such as tree bark. Next, he cuts or shapes the materials according to the size and shape he desires, then he ties or sews the parts together to form the container.

Next is the Food Container from Natural Materials. Andrian can make a simple container for storing food from leaves or waterproof tree bark. The shape of the leaves or tree bark can be suitable for storing food, then he ties or sews the parts together to form a sturdy container.

And finally, all the tools he had to make were finished. He had also tested whether these tools he had made functioned properly. That meant his mission this time was successful, and he even completed the mission within one day.

And indeed, when he finished making the last tool and ensured it functioned normally, the System gave a notification indicating that the mission was completed.
