Chapter 29 - Chapter 28

Ron now understood why the shopkeeper was so careful about everything. He saw similar care everywhere else in the market too, this burglar had made a name for herself in this region going around stealing all kinds of stuff. It seemed to him that the burglar was just having fun and taunting the guards. But it was interesting that no one was able to catch the thief and now they had to paste posters in the towns. Usually, that was done only to warn the public about some dangerous criminal. Ron and Fiona finished their trip and went back to the forest, where they had set camp.

It was night now and the camp area was bubbling with life, after he had started doing good in the training sessions and had started to learn how to use his powers, the camp atmosphere which used to irritate him before seemed nice. He felt like he was a part of the group a little, some of them even called out his name and waved as they went by, or maybe it was just because he was with Fiona. There weren't too many girls here, and after being away from their hometown now the boys were getting braver and trying to talk to Fiona all the time, Fiona was really pretty and her personality when she wasn't sad was magnetic always attracting others towards her. This troubled Ron a lot, Every time some guy came up to her and started talking to her, he would just pray with all his heart that she didn't start liking him. Ron had started doing special exercises early in the morning or when everyone was busy to put on some more muscles, in case Fiona liked men like that.

"I need to go help prepare the dinner, it's my turn today, see you later," said Fiona and left.

Ron nodded and watched her go, he then remembered he also had to go clean up his mother's tent, so he hurried off too. Isanna's tent was the biggest since she needed to hold meetings all the time, it had another room where she slept, and you could find Vanessa in the outer meeting area often. No one was supposed to go inside her room, Ron however after checking that Vanessa wasn't there entered, and he wanted to talk to her.

Isanna was going over some scrolls on her bad, she had her armor off and also her commander personality which she kept on like a guard and felt comfortable like that. But it, as expected, slipped in front of her kids, that was probably a factor too why Ron hadn't yet started training with her battalion, but she couldn't think like that always, it was important Ron had experience and she wasn't going to be in his way.

"How did the meeting go, what was it about anyway?" Ron asked coming in.

"We finally received a letter from Derek, " she said looking up and standing. Before she might not have told him or maybe not everything but she was going to start including him more, even though he was bound to tell Fiona everything but she could be trusted.

"Did it say anything about Fiona?" asked Ron at once. Isanna had sent a letter ahead before they had left asking for more information about the mission and she had mentioned Fiona in that.

"No, he didn't read my letter, said he was too busy and knew what it would be about that jerk, we'll just have to talk to him about it when we'll meet him," she answered.

"Then what did the letter say?" asked Ron.

"That's what the meeting was about, he wants me to send the men to the South Tower, and meet him somewhere else alone," said Isanna.

"Where?" asked Ron.

"Some weirds place a little west of the Tower, about half a day away," she said.

"Then who will command the men at the border what if something happens," asked Ron.

"Yes, that's what I am worried about, we still don't know why we are going there, the worst possibility is it's because of some matter with the halfbreeds, and if that's the case I need to be at the border, but Derek wouldn't make a stupid mistake like that, still I'll leave Vanessa in command till then," she said.

"You should take Vanessa with you, most of them can take care of themselves they are very experienced and the best of the best," said Ron.

"Don't worry about me, I'll move quickly alone, it's been a while since I have been on a good mission alone, and I am hoping to see some good action," she said.

"What about me and Fiona, we needed to see Derek?" asked Ron.

"Yes, I am afraid that will have to wait, though I will try my best to talk to him myself if we get time to talk, till then, as you know, since you are both amateurs, yes I know, you aren't exactly but still, I am doing the same with the other cadets, I can't let you join the action, whatever and whenever it might be," she said.

"But I work at the North Tower, there can be action there too anytime," he said.

"North border is much safer than South, and you need to keep an eye on Fiona too don't you?" she said. Ron didn't want to take Fiona to a fight yet, she wasn't ready at all.

"You will stay back with the other cadets, and don't be disappointed, once they assess the situation, they might call you as reinforcements," she said.

Ron did his chores in the tent and left to find Fiona. The camp was much darker now, they didn't have too many lamps lit, just in case they were visible from the city, Ron reached the food tent where dinner was being served, he didn't find her there at once, but there was a small crowd there so he quickly ate something in a hurry and went to the back of the tent where the food was made, she wasn't there either, then he thought she might have gone to the back of the camp, to get water, there was a small river there. So he left the camp and entered the dark forest. He took out one arrow from his bag and with his power heated the metal tip by vibrating the metal on it, it glowed red soon enough, Ron was more confident now in using his power, he didn't like using too much mana before, he didn't like the feeling of exhaustion that filled his very bones when he started using lots of it, he also used to be afraid of mana exhaustion, the others used to scare him by telling him stories of what happened to people who used too much mana, and that with his skinny body, he probably had very little, he knew they were exaggerating but the fear was there in his heart always. Now however he was ready and wanted to see things like how much could he make the tip glow, could he burn the metal, he had never heard of metal burning, but what color the flames must be, he thought.
