Chapter 6: Green eyes
"Thanks so much for taking me on a tour", Kaitlyn said in appreciation.
"Don't bother".
"Uh...", Kaitlyn was going to say something but was cut off by Ava's shout.
"Hey!"
Kyle turned to the direction of the shout. He heaved a sigh and turned to her direction, ignoring Kaitlyn completely.
"Keep it down Ava, you're always yelling".
Something unseen, swept past Kaitlyn's face at the sight of Ava.
"I know right? I came to fetch you. It's time to go home".
"Yeah, I'll go get my things". He left.
Ava looked at the girl in front of her. 'Must be the transfer girl', she thought.
"Hi", she heard the girl say.
Ava looked at her. She was a beauty. Bright blue eyes, small cute lips, a pretty nose and an alluring smile. She looked pretty and friendly. However, Ava didn't see her as one. No matter how good her impression was at first sight, it wasn't good enough to please Ava. Ava wondered what was wrong with her.
"Hi", Ava replied.
"I'm Kaitlyn Hart. You can call me Kaitlyn".
"Ava. Ava Bateman. Welcome to CC", She said smiling.
"Thanks". As if having wrapped her head around something, she let out a gasp and cupped her mouth with her hands.
"You're Ava Bateman? That Ava Bateman?"
Ava chuckled. "Which one do you know?"
"The one with the National honor. Can I get an autograph?"
"Seriously? Ok. Sure".
Kaitlyn took out her notebook and handed it to Ava to give her, her autograph.
Ava room the book to sign. She didn't notice the change of expression on Kaitlyn's face.
"Here", she said handing over the notebook to Kaitlyn who received it as if it was the most treasured antique in the world.
"Ava", that deep male voice sounded catching the attention of the duo.
"You done?"
"Yeah. Let's go".
"Sure. Bye Kaitlyn"
"Yeah bye. Bye Green eyes".
The duo stopped in their tracks simultaneously. They looked at each other and burst out laughing. Kaitlyn was caught off guard.
"Kaitlyn, it's Kyle. That's his name", Ava said.
" But I like the green eyes though ".
This made the trio burst into another wave of amusement, peals of laughter renting the air.
"Ok then, let's go home. You can join us Kaitlyn", Ava said wrapping her slender but sturdy arms around Kyle's and Kaitlyn's neck. Kaitlyn looked at Kyle but he was looking at Ava with an arched brow. This made Kaitlyn's tummy churn with a flame of anger.
"Say yes Mister Compton".
"Mister Compton? Ava?"
"It's fine. I'll get you Papas fries", she said with a wink.
Papas fries was Kyle's best brand of fries. This was because it was spicy and also had a dish of veggies sauce to accompany it.
Kaitlyn couldn't help the warm friendly bickering that was going in between them. She was about to slide off of Ava's arm but Ava got her steady.
"Hey Kaitie, you'll be going with us, ok?"
" Oh...ok then. Thanks".
The trio walked to the bike park where their motorbikes were parked.
"Hey Kaitie, let's ride together", Ava offered.
"Al...", Kaitlyn trailed off as she was interrupted by Kyle.
"Let her ride with me instead", he said. Kaitlyn was going to jump for joy secretly but was bound to be stumped when she heard his next words.
"It'll be a load for you". "Ok then, let's go".
Ava mounted on her bike with her radiating smile, oblivious of the dreadful glare targeted at her.
"Here", Kyle said as he handed Kaitlyn the helmet. "You should thank her later, I hate being close to strangers".
"Then, I'd rather not ride with you guys".
"Better ",came the cold reply from him. Kaitlyn paled at a lightening speed. She least expected that. That wasn't how she drew the picture in her head.
"Oh no... I can't believe this is going on. Kyle...", Ava said giving her bestie a look. She wasn't so pleased with Kaitlyn, but she wasn't a person to treat a good person harshly. Kaitlyn was quite nice so, she wanted to make her feel happy as a newbie at CC and also, to retain her 'queen' image.
Kyle heaved a sigh and mounted his bike. "Get on", was the cold command.
Kaitlyn hurriedly got on her bike, afraid that he would change his mind.
"Catch me if you can", Ava yelled and zoomed off.
Kyle smirked as he ignited his engine and soon was on the road.
Unknown to them, their school entertainment board already prepared a spicy dish for them the next day.
The trio were having a good ride home, with Ava in the lead and Kyle behind her. Sometimes Kyle took the lead while smirking at a fuming Ava behind. This was always their daily routine. A race back home. Kaitlyn wasn't so pleased as she watched the duo play around. She hated Ava the most in all of this. For making her join them on their trip back home. She felt like a third wheel and obviously that was what she was. This was all that bitch's plan! , Kaitlyn screamed in her mind.
A musical ringtone rang out, disrupting the playful race between the two. Ava slowed down to pick up the call, as it was her mom.
"Hey mom",
"Ava, please can you come home real quick? I just got a burn on my arm", the tearful voice of Mrs Clara Bateman filled her ears.
"The hell!", Ava yelled.
"Ava, I'm in pain".
"Yeah mom, I'm coming. Hang in there".
"Something came up at home?", Kyle asked the moment she hung up.
"Yes. Mom got her arm roasted".
"Bad", he mouthed.
"Too bad I won't be taking you home too Kaitlyn ", Ava said.
"It's fine. Your mom needs you", she said smiling inwardly. That was just a way of telling her to get the hell out. Heaven was even helping her.
"Alright then, see you tomorrow".
She zoomed off in the direction that led to her house.
The ride to Kaitlyn's place was so silent that she could hear her heartbeat. She was afraid that he would hear it too.
"You guys are quite close", she said, trying to strike up a conversation.
"Yeah", came the curt reply.
"You guys aren't a pair. Why?"
"Do you want a ride home or do you want to know about Ava and I?", Kyle asked feeling a tad pissed.
"My bad. I crossed the boundaries".
Ava got home as fast as she could and raced to the elevator. She lived in a block of flats of twenty-five floors with her parents and their unit was situated on the fifteenth floor. She couldn't believe that she still lived with her parents at her age but that was happy since she had to cut a lot of costs.
Ava inputed the password on the door lock giving her pass into the house.
"Mom?", she called as her eyes scanned the living room. Ther was no reply.
Dread filled her as she walked to the kitchen but there was no one there.
"Mom?", she called again. But there was no reply. She heard the sound of laughter coming from a certain room. The laughter was horrifying which clenched Ava's heart. She grabbed her hairpin that was used to stick her hair.
And she walked... slowly...and stealthily. She grabbed the doorknob and bent it open.
