Chapter 12 - 12

A cold winter sets in and then everything was covered in pure white snow. What was supposed to be a joyful season turned into a disaster when news spread that the Northern border wall has finally fallen. Felix's guess was right, among the refugees that came, there were spys. The information of the unit was exposed and so they attacked when food was scarse and only a few men where there.

Although we somehow were able to hold off, it didn't change the fact that the wall was broken and soon the all out war will happen. Everyone was on edge and I heard the Emperor still haven't recovered yet.

It's cold today. I really like how I can see my own breadth when I talk now. Recently I have been so busy taking care of the house as my husband is busy with preparation for war. It seems there too many work to do at the palace. The rations for the soldiers, the tax collection were too much for the poor that the farmers aren't able produce well plus it's winter so our once glorious Empire was reduced to a poor state.

I came out today again and I saw many homeless people again. Under the cold winter snow they scrouched down by the street hugging themselves to warm up. The Church was full with too many injured soldiers coming in from the Northern side. My bar is open for the poor at night and so Jared had been working hard to provide food for them.

When I went into my office, Jared came in a bit hesitant. He's hiding something.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"My Lady, i don't know how to tell you..."

"Is it something important?"

"Yes... I think it's very important..."

The boy still looked nervous and was sweating. What does he know?

I asked him to sit down and relax first. Then he began a crazy tale he had heard a few days back.

" My lady... A few days back I was serving the customers as I usually do and then at the private table there were two hooded figure. I couldn't really see their faces but I could tell they were dangerous. While I went to serve i overheard their conversation. My lady this is what I heard, "The time is coming. On the night of the full moon we will visit the Emperor's chambers. The Viscount will let us stay with him for a while so we must be quick." "

I gasp as I heard. This is an assassination attempt. But a Viscount is involved which means there's a traitor among the nobles. First thing first, " Did they know that you were listening?"

"No i don't think so I quickly got out of there. Did I do the right thing my lady?"

This kid he must've been afraid. I patted his head, " You did good. From now on don't got to anyone else but me and if something like this happens again try to be cautious."

This is vital information, one i must tell my husband. I guess our divorce can wait.

As I went inside his office he wasn't in his usual chair behind the table. I turned my eyes on the couch and there he was. Laying with his back and a hand on over his head. His hair flows down the couch and ran on the floor. As I got a closer i could see his face.

His face, devoid of any marks like a crystal clear pearl under the moonlight, anyone would jumped on him. He has dark circles under his eyes. How much has he been working that such dark circles would show up.

Indeed my husband was handsome. I tried to pick up the documents laying around him. However it seems that my small movements made a loud sound. He immediately got up and grabbed my hand. It hurts again. Seeing that it's just me he relaxed.

"What are you doing here?" He said as he let go of my hand.

"Your Grace, I've news.... Bad ones."
