Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

A soft, sweet, melody of a tune escaped my lips as I sang gently. The wind was blowing carefully past my body as I sat in the courtyard. I sat on the edge of the fountain. My shoes were placed by my bag, and my bare feet were soaking up the water of the fountain. It felt divine. I always loved the water. I could not explain the way that it seemed to call me. I used my toe to splash a bit of water onto the other side of the fountain.

"Careful, you may fall in." Someone said,

I looked behind me to look at who had spoken to me. It was Trent. I sighed and looked at him with pity. I truly cannot believe he was acting this way. Part of my heart ached. I can't take it back. All I can do now is move forward with myself.

"You do not seem to know how to take no for an answer." I spoke.

"I don't hold that against you. I know your day has been rough. You just aren't thinking clearly." He said lightly.

I was silent as I heard him kick off his shoes and sit beside me at the fountain. We were shoulder to shoulder and for a split second I felt normal. I did not remember the weird dreams I had been having, and I was just me. I leaned my head on his shoulder.

I looked at Trent's feet as he also splashed water to the other side of the fountain.

"Sybil, I know you have been out of it lately, and I am sorry I haven't been there much." He said to me,

Oh Trent… those were the words that I needed to hear, but you are too late. A small sigh escaped my lips, and I could only look down at the water. I sighed again and closed my eyes tightly.

"I feel as if something is awakening inside me and I feel as if something is going to happen to me soon. For some reason, I know deep inside of me, and I won't be able to stop it." I whispered these words.

I looked up to see Trent looking at me with a sincere gaze. I knew he took my words for the truth. That is something I loved about him. He was there for me when I needed him to be. Then the magic was broken. I heard a group of footsteps and turned to see Trent's group of friends.

"Owen. Raizer. To what do I owe this horror?" I ask.

Owen glared at me until Trent stood up in front of me. Owen locked eyes with Trent and after a few moments he looked away. What was that about? I narrowed my eyes in confusion. What was going on? Trent spoke to me and told me he would have to go. He said our conversation wasn't over. I rolled my eyes. What was new? I used my hand to motion for him to go. What was the point?

They left me by the fountain. I still had a bit of time until my next class for the day. I groaned and used this hair tie to pull my hair up into a high messy bun.

"Need to cool off after tasting Hell, huh?" A voice called.

My eyes opened wide in surprise. My head snapped to the side as I searched for the owner of the voice. I groaned even more when I saw none other than Heath. I turned back towards my fountain.

"Can you not see I came to the fountain to wash you from my lips?" I said jokingly.

He laughed and jumped up on the rail beside me. He did not sit, instead he stood to balance himself. I was half tempted to push him in. I smiled at the thought of that occurring.

"I have nothing left for the day, how bout' we ditch this place?" He asked.

I rolled my eyes.

"I have my Myths and Legends course next, so I will pass. You should try it sometime. Y'know? The going to class idea." I said grinning.

"How about tonight. There is a party up on the hill of the old farmhouse. Should be lots of fun." He mentioned.

"I am not so sure about all of that… I am not much of a party scene type of girl." I spoke.

Then Heath did something that surprised me. He jumped into the fountain waters right in front of me. I turned my head to the side and put my hands up to cover me from the water! When I felt the water fall onto me, I could not help but to laugh.

"Are you insane?" I said laughing.

He laughed as well and looked down as he stood in front of me.

"You promise to come to the party, and I promise you I will be there." He spoke.

I bit the bottom of my lip and rolled my eyes.

"Fine but get out of the fountain you will make the water nasty." I spoke.

He smiled widely and jumped out of the fountain.

"Later Sybil." He called.

I watched as he left, and I was shaking my head the entire time. What is wrong with the entire male population these days?

After a much-needed time around the fountain, I found myself wandering into my Myths Class. The teacher seemed to take very good care of the room. The only dust was left in the corners of the room, but it only seemed to make the lessons we were learning more enjoyable. It brought every story to live in my eyes. My favorite part about the room was none of the chairs seemed to match. I settled in on this sofa in the very back. I pulled out my spiral journal and my black inked pen. This class was definitely a note-taking class.

More students seemed to pile in, but only ten students were allowed for this class. We had a few students that I did not bother getting to know, but I did know a few students. Kira and Allisha were the only two students I spoke to occasionally, as of lately. Kira sat right beside me, and Allisha plopped down in the seat across from Kira and myself. Allisha stared at the board just as Kira smiled softly at me.

I resumed looking at the board as the teacher walked into the room. He was a simple black man. His gray beard suited his skin very well. He was bald, but he made up for his lack of hair in his personality. He also wore a yellow and brown plaid shirt with brown pants.

"Alright, Class! Welcome back to another great class of learning more about the known, and the unknown." Mr. Louis said enthusiastically.

I kicked off my shoes and tucked them under my body as I sat on the sofa. I leaned on the edge of the sofa to prop myself up.

"Today, we will be learning about Sirens. Now does anyone know any interesting facts about them?" The teacher asked.

Mr. Louis called on a boy in the front.

"They're smoking hot!" He spoke.

Instead of yelling at the student, Mr. Louis simply laughed at his remark.

"Indeed, they are! They can also lure you to the bottom of the sea with their 'smoking hot' looks. In which case, they would tear you apart in a brutal way and you would never know what the sun looks like again." Mr. Louis said.

I looked over slightly when a small chuckle could be heard from Kira beside me. The teacher also seemed to hear this and looked over with his eyebrows raised.

"Miss Kira, you seem to be in a mood to share an interesting fact about Sirens." He instructed.

"Of course! That lovely looking siren was actually a large bird headed woman. However, the world seemed to imagine them in a better light when they could not seem to see the truth. Though, history seemed to forget this information. Now they are just malevolent creatures." She stated.

The teacher seemed to be listening to her words and nodded.

"That is great knowledge that you know, but also a very interesting viewpoint on how you seem to think the world is feeling." He spoke.

He began to write down the aspects and information that Kira spoke of when she was called on. I also began to take notes and I wrote down what the teacher wrote on the board. Then he set down the chalk piece, and then he turned to look at me.

"Miss Sybil! Seeing as your name is Siren related, do share what you know about Sirens." He spoke happily.

I bit my bottom lip. I hated when they called on me. Do you need me to write a paper? I got your back. I can ace a test if they ask me to, but do not call on me. I sighed softly. I only know the nerdy parts of history, and that's what information I gave them.

"In primitive times Sirens were birthed from the line of Achelous. In fact, they were often confused or even compared to river deities. Sirens were given their names based on their voices. The ones who lured men with simple words alone, they were known as Aglaophonos. There were also the Thelxiepeia ones who used their words to not enslave, but to persuade another. Lastly… Molpe were those who are commonly known as the modern-day sirens… They used their voice to lure men to their deaths." I spoke.

For some reason, I feel that there was a smile on my face. I forced myself to remain neutral. What the hell was wrong with me? I briefly saw that Kira and Allisha were looking at me. I took a small glance over and saw them studying me as well, but they seemed to also be smiling. I quickly averted my eyes from theirs.

"Very well said Sybil! Wow! That information was truly incredible." Mr. Louis spoke.

I found myself looking down at the floor. I was not used to speaking up in this class. I prefer to simply soak up the information that is given to me. I then seemed to find my mouth twitching up in a small smile. Perhaps I was secretly proud. I had branched out. Maybe things were taking a turn for the better.
