Chapter 14 - Streets Of The Campania

"Get tired, easily? Why?"

"Your twin should be ashamed for not teaching his little sister the basics of handling Elemental Energy and using Magecraft. Shame on him. Anyways, to answer you, since you don't have a limiter, your Elemental Energy output doesn't know when to stop."

"Thus, in the long run, not only are you a beacon for the hungry things out there but you would be drained of your powers easily," explained Matt, walking over to the bedside to grab the cloak.

"Put this on, we are heading out to a nearby place for breakfast. Earlier I mentioned that the cloak has some special uses, one of 'em is to hide your Elemental Energy levels and Aura."

"I will have to teach you over time but that'll do for now," instructed the bunny man as he wore his coat and shoes.

Layla nodded and did as she was told. As she moved past the bunny, the Dragoon yanked the surprised rabbit's collar, forcing him to meet her eyes.

"I learned Magecraft and my Elemental Powers by myself because my parents are dead and my twin wasn't around to defend me. And for the record, I'm the older twin," growled Layla through clenched teeth.

The Loplin swallowed a huge lump in his throat and nodded. The Dragoon then smiled and let go of his collar, going on with her merry way.

"I swear… She is either going to kill me or I need to wear armor in my sleep soon…" complained Matt as he tailed her.

"Wait, does that mean that the fight moves you performed on me are not from your brother?" asked the Loplin.

"I never said that my twin was the one who trained me... I just happened to learn street fighting while he got the proper training from the Royal Guard. Besides, my kingdom doesn't like it when females learn how to fight."

"Then how'd you managed to learn or even conjure up your scythe?"

"Same way as I conjure up my fake tail. With practice and sneaking into the barracks to see hot men working out..."

"Layla!"

As the two walked through the streets, the Dragoon soon curbed her laughter as she could not help but see how awful the streets were. Felidaes with tattered clothes and broken bodies were all sleeping or dead by the roadsides.

Half-drunk glass bottles strewn everywhere and rats were picking on the dead flesh. Fights were happening almost after every block and screams could be heard from the alleyways.

But the worst was yet to come as the two stumbled upon a wall plastered with posters, absolutely hating on the Dragoons.

From having wanted posters on the Dragoons to a flyer that promoted prostitution for Dragoon ladies, Layla instantly felt sick as she could not stop reading the papers. Her eyes could not help but read every single poster on the board.

She nearly hurled when she saw a familiar face being forced into submission as the poster spoke about live auctions to sell off Dragoon females. Matt regretted stopping at the place as the poor girl started to shiver.

"I apologize… I shouldn't have stopped here… Come on now, let's go somewhere more peaceful and…" comforted the Loplin as he tried to drag away the shaking Dragoon.

To his surprise, Layla knocked away his arm and went over to the board.

"And run away from the horrors? How long can you keep me sheltered from the truth? I didn't leave my home to continue living in that hidey-hole I had, I left to explore the world…"

"Yes, but the world is so much better than this hellhole. And not everyone thinks that your kind should be portrayed this way…"

"My twin is on this. He is wanted by this place's Royal Guard."

The Loplin cursed as he tried his best to get Layla away from the board. However, since his words weren't reaching her, Matt did the only thing he could. He wrapped his arms around the Dragoon to stop her from looking.

Layla was shocked but she didn't resist it. Despite everything, she knew that she needed to accept the fact that the world wasn't as kind as she thought it would be. And that she had been living under a rock for a whole life.

After a few Ticks, Matt slowly pulled away from the embrace to give a small peck on Layla's forehead.

"I don't blame you for what your kind has done to the other kingdoms. Hell, you weren't even born back then nor did you even do the heinous crimes."

"You are just a little Dragoon trying to explore the world and have some fun, not bear the burden that your ancestors have left behind. Their actions do not define who you are right now, you hear me?"
