Chapter 14 - The Glowing Axe

Arun would have brushed off the two-handed axe, as a simple old and rusted thing, if it weren't for his wound.

After defeating the Mama Goblin, he took the scroll and sat at one end to catch some breath. Taking out the old spearhead from his shoulder, he figured that he should probably make a healing potion. His wound was not very deep but could turn harmful if left unchecked. As he had everything he needed in the cave itself, he took out the pestle and got to work soon.

He started mixing and grinding the herbs together. And eventually came to a Grogo Nut. This particular ingredient was like a walnut. He needed the white flesh that was inside the thing to mix in the pestle. So he took the axe, from which he killed The Mama Goblin, to break the outer shell. He thought that he could use the handle of the axe, by slamming the butt of the handle on the ground.

So he sat down with the Nut before him. Took the ax, and brought it down on the nut. The outer shell broke quite easily, but at the same time, Arun got startled and let go of the axe. The edge of the blade of the axe started glowing in a purple shade. And at the same time, he could tell that almost 95% of his mana was consumed somehow. Which was a lot, considering he had recovered most of his mana when was entering the cave.

Wait, did that thing consume my mana?

Curious, he got up and checked the ax. While inspecting it, the glow from the edge vanished. And he couldnt really understand what happened there.

This axe was made of old maroon mahogany wood. It was a double-handed axe, quite heavy from his sword. The blade of the ax was rusted, with a thick layer of rusted chips forming on its metallic blade. He could tell that its edge was sharp. But he couldnt really tell whether this axe was worth something. As his mana was used to make the axe glow, he knew that it meant that this axe used mana just like a quiver. But what it could be?

The only thing that he could do at that moment was to wait for his mana to recover. Only then he could test what this axe was.

That night he had the chance to use the ax. After cooking some food and drinking two bottles of the healing potion, his mana reserves went back to their original state. And then he took the ax in his hands again, with his target being one of the pigs that the goblins caught that day. He tried sending mana to the axe, but for some reason it didnt work. It didnt take him long to figure out that one needs to tap the butt of the handle of the axe to activate the magic.

And when he did, the blade's edge of the axe started glowing purple. To see what kind of effect it would have, he tried making a small cut in the body of the pig. To his surprise, the axe was able to cut through the flesh as if were butter. This type of cut was not possible even if one were to use the sharpest blade on Earth. But before he could do further testing, he had got off the axe when he realized that his mana reserves were running low.

In the end, he realized that the axe had the ability to sharpen its blade to an ungodly level with the help of mana. It essentially becomes just like a light-emitting saber from a famous Sci-fi movie on Earth. It eats a lot of his mana, but it was all worth it considering what he was able to achieve with the blade.

Wait… I have killed many goblins today. And I took care of Mama Goblin as well.. I should have leveled up, right?

He remembered that he had muted his notification before, so it didnt come as a surprise to him that he had indeed leveled up, and he didnt get any notification.

What the fuck? I am level 7 now. How the hell is that possible?

But then he did the math. He remembers getting around 5 exp points for killing a single goblin. Today itself he had earned more than 60 exp points by just killing a midgets goblins. He didnt know what kind of exp would one get from those small pigs. As far as Mama Goblin is concerned, he believes that he got a lot of points from her.

Also, wasn't she very injured when she fought me? I wonder what could have injured her to such an extent…

Pushing his thoughts aside, he went on and opened his stat menu.

He realized that he needed Arcane or magic in order to use the axe and replenish his arrows. That is why he allocated 6 stat points to it. And then sprinkled the rest of the stat points to other stats according to his fighting style. By the end, he felt that he should have increased his strength by a little more. But figured as he usually tends to attack enemies from a distance, increasing strength didnt make sense to him.

Plus he figured that he was on the verge of another level up anyway. So it didnt matter to him. For a hunter like him, it wouldn't take long to level up again. At that time, he could increase his strength if he needed it.

After spending the night in the cave, the next day Arun woke up, full of vigor. He felt his wound and realized that it was almost healed. And if he were to take one more healing potion today, it would be fully healed by the time the sun comes on his head. The kind of healing speed that the potion had shown him had surprised him a lot. He still couldnt truly believe that all of this was possible.

While he ate breakfast, Arun stared at the pile of stuff that he would be taking from the cave. As he was looking around last night, he realized that the throne of the Mama Goblin was made from human bones. And sure enough, he also found various human things and clothes in one dark corner of the room. It seemed to him, that pig meat was not the only thing that these midgest consumed.

But going through all of the stuff, he came across many useful things. He found a lot of coins, which went straight to his inventory. He had found some leather sheathe for his sword and survival knife. Also, he found a pair of leather boots. They were not very comfortable but were more practical than the leather sandals that he was wearing.

Not only that he found some good attires in the pile as well. He did try every single one of them on, to see whether anything from the pile might boast up his stats. But that was certainly not the case.

After everything was done, Arun adorned a black cloak and clothes and started his journey once again….
