Chapter 18 - Chapter 17 I'm Just a Genius That's All

All three of them were watching John Jones tensely, and after John Jones had been looking at Daniel's computer for a long time, he finally let out a sigh of relief and nodded, "It's what we were looking for."

Daniel finally took his finger out of his mouth, where he'd been biting it, revealing a satisfied smile.

Yang Yi also let out a breath. While his role in his first mission had been the simplest, he had nonetheless saved this operation, which was undeniably a delightful and proud achievement.

Delaying Wayne Rushford for fifteen minutes seemed easy, but in reality, it was very difficult.

Wayne Rushford was the chairman of a big company; managing to talk in his office for fifteen minutes was already tough, let alone at the elevator entrance of the company building. To these successful people, who were rich, powerful, and busy, giving fifteen seconds to an unfamiliar and unimportant stranger was incredibly generous.

Yet, Yang Yi had managed to delay Wayne Rushford for fifteen minutes at the elevator entrance, so this was actually a remarkable achievement.

John Jones looked at Daniel and then smiled, "Copy all the data about the financial department, also the acquisition plans, then destroy the files on the computer, in a way that they cannot be recovered."

Daniel nodded, picked up his computer, and headed straight for a room.

Watching Daniel leave, John Jones took off his floral-patterned glasses, then looked at Yang Yi with a serious expression and said, "How did you do it? What exactly did you say? Recount everything to me in detail."

This was like a debriefing. Yang Yi needed to describe in detail everything he said and did, so that John Jones could analyze whether there were any loose ends that could catch them out or if there was anything more they needed to do to cover any potential leaks.

Therefore, Yang Yi recounted everything he had said and done, ensuring not a single word was amiss; he could even mimic Wayne Rushford's tone and gestures.

During the debriefing, also known as scenario recreation, Kate would also have to recount her experiences, but this time it was unnecessary, as Yang Yi had spoken for her.

Watching Yang Yi vividly reenact the scene, John Jones was somewhat taken aback.

"You… remembered it all?"

"Yes, I remembered it all, with absolutely no mistakes. I've said I have a good memory."

John Jones swallowed, then nodded and spoke in a low voice, "Quite daring remarks, but nothing that leaves us exposed. However, I want to know how you recognized Wayne?"

"I've seen his picture."

"And how did you know he had just attended the Hannover International Machine Tool Exhibition?"

"Uh, Wells and Ryan gather intelligence on the Aigertoni Company daily. They mentioned that Wayne Rushford went to Germany, and his purpose there was to negotiate with a company, with the company's headquarters in Hannover. I remember Aigertoni Company has a controlling stake in a machine tool company, which participated in the exhibition. On the eve of the official opening of the exposition, there was a cocktail party, so, I thought he might attend the party."

John Jones frowned and said, "So, you just assumed Wayne Rushford also attended that cocktail party?"

"Yes, it was logical that he might attend, so I mentioned it because, other than that, I had no reason to connect with him—I could only try."

John Jones nodded and then, intrigued, said, "You thought of all this after seeing Wayne Rushford?"

"Yes."

"Did you look up any information?"

"No, there was no time. I just remembered the news I had seen in the past few days and summarized the previous leads. Then I realized it was my only option, and so I spoke that way."

John Jones took a deep breath, then nodded and said, "You remembered all that information just by listening to us mention it once."

"Yes."

John Jones hesitated for a moment, then addressed Yang Yi, "Just how good is your memory?"

Yang Yi confidently said, "Extremely good, to a degree you wouldn't understand."

John Jones looked around, then quickly stood up, returned to his bedroom, and not long after, came out with a ledger, which he placed in front of Yang Yi. He said gravely, "Read the first page as quickly as you can, then recite it to me in full."

Yang Yi took the ledger which was nearly covered with numbers, skimmed it quickly, then closed the ledger and smiled, "Done."

John Jones looked at his watch, his face showing surprise as he said, "Sixteen seconds, are you sure you finished reading it?"

Yang Yi, somewhat proud, said, "Not only did I finish reading it, I also memorized it. Now let me prove it to you."

Yang Yi began to recite, not missing a single digit, and he even recited the punctuation marks, but that was simply to show off.

When Yang Yi finished, John Jones's expression was quite a sight, while Kate's was rather unpleasant, seemingly disdainful yet unable to hide her jealousy.

So Yang Yi was even more proud as he said in the most normal tone possible, "Done reciting, and there's no mistake. I've always thought that to be a successful spy, a clever brain is far more important than developed limbs."

John Jones exhaled, nodded, and said, "Yes, the brain is more important than the limbs."

Kate finally couldn't help but snort.

John Jones thought for a moment, then, addressing Yang Yi, said, "Do you have hyperthymesia?"

Yang Yi immediately replied, "No, definitely not. Hyperthymesia is a pathological phenomenon, classified as involuntary memory. People with hyperthymesia can't control what they remember, and although they have strong memory capacity, their ability for logical thinking and association is limited because their brains can't autonomously decide what to remember. They remember all the trivial details of life, filling their head with useless information. I just remember the important things I need to, so I am not a hyperthymesia patient, I'm simply a genius."

John Jones nodded again and said with gravity, "Then you really are a genius."

Yang Yi smiled smugly, and then said to John Jones, "Can I ask a question? I want to know how Ryan and Wells got into the chairman's office and how they stole the intelligence."

John Jones shook his head and said softly, "That's about their personal skills. I can't tell you what skills they have unless they choose to tell you themselves."

Yang Yi was slightly disappointed, but he quickly got over it.

"It seems like using you as a driver really is a waste. Your skill isn't driving, but intelligence analysis. You possess a clever and rational mind. From now on, you will work as my assistant, and I will teach you how to become a qualified brain. Of course, if you want to learn more, no problem, I will teach you because a brain definitely needs to know at least what his hands and feet can do and how much strain they can withstand."

Yang Yi was overjoyed and said in surprise, "Really?"

John Jones nodded and said, "Of course it's true. You've shown exceptional talent, so naturally I should put you in the right position."

Kate suddenly said, "What about me then? What am I going to do in the future?"

"You? You'll still be a driver. From now on, just do the support work well on your own."

Kate was extremely indignant. She opened her mouth to speak but ended up saying nothing, yet Yang Yi could not help but ask with a puzzled face, "Which is more important, limbs or brains? A person can probably live without legs, but what happens without a brain?"

Kate looked up, glared fiercely at Yang Yi, and said, "I'll break your legs and see if you can still live, alright?"

Yang Yi laughed heartily, while John Jones frowned and said, "Enough. As a man, you should have a gentleman's demeanor. Making fun of a beautiful lady is in any case an ungentlemanly act. And bragging about your own talent is a very superficial behavior."

Yang Yi fell silent, awkward, and Kate gave him a sarcastic smile. But just then, John Jones, with an expressionless face, said, "Ross is a newcomer, he still has much to learn. Kate, from now on you will be his assistant. You'll need to teach him some basic knowledge, but you must follow his orders."

Kate was stunned. She stood up and shouted loudly, "No! That's impossible!"

John Jones's expression remained unchanged as he said, "I do not want anyone on my team who refuses to follow orders."

Kate looked like she was about to explode. She looked at her father, then at Yang Yi, then back at her father before yelling, "Why are you helping a jerk like that? I'm your daughter! Are you out of your mind?"

John Jones spoke slowly, "If you were only my daughter, then I would never tolerate his provocation towards you, but you're going to be a spy on the team I lead, so I have to treat you from a spy's standpoint. Don't you know that as spies, the strong deserve respect?"

Seeing Kate still fuming, John Jones sighed and said, "Either you choose to be a normal girl, or else, you must do as I say."

Kate sat down, huffing, and Yang Yi also refrained from provocation, since after all Kate was John Jones's daughter.

Daniel came out, holding a USB flash drive, and as soon as John Jones received the flash drive, he stood up and said in a deep tone, "I'm going to meet the contact person. If nothing unexpected happens, we'll be back here tonight to split the money."

After finishing, John Jones straightened his clothes and walked out the door, and Daniel silently packed up his things and followed swiftly, leaving John Jones's house.

Only Yang Yi and Kate remained. They exchanged glances, both trying to mock the other with disdainful eyes, then almost simultaneously snorted and returned to their respective rooms.
