Jenny's eyes quickly lost their sparkle, and she too had died.
Kate was somewhat shattered, consumed by grief, clutching her mother's hand and just weeping, motionless, without making a sound.
The blow to Yang Yi's abdomen was quite heavy, and as time passed, the pain didn't diminish, but instead, seemed to be getting worse.
With great effort, Yang Yi pushed Kate and said through clenched teeth, "Go get what your mother talked about, and let's get out of here!"
Kate's eyes, dull with lack of understanding, turned to Yang Yi, and she asked incredulously, "Leave?"
Yang Yi was somewhat angry, and spoke urgently, "Don't you understand the meaning of escape, idiot! We have to leave here fast, the police will be here soon, and so will the killer. Right now, it's important to save our lives."
Kate stood up, but she continued to gaze blankly at her mother, who was now motionless.
Yang Yi sighed and, gritting his teeth, said, "Support me, go get the stuff, check the bedroom, hurry!"
Under Yang Yi's commanding tone, Kate helped him up, and they both entered Jenny's bedroom.
Once in the bedroom, Yang Yi could confirm that Jenny had endured a long period of torture here. The reason why Jenny lay on the sofa in the living room was that the killer had used her to attract attention, making it easier to strike.
If it hadn't been for Kate, the killer would have succeeded. Although Yang Yi had a gun and actually fired a shot, he couldn't stop the killer. Fortunately, Kate was a formidable fighter, otherwise, he would have died.
No, he would have been dead already.
There were several bloodstains on the bed, but no signs of struggle, and Jenny's phone had been tossed aside.
Yang Yi picked up Jenny's phone, checked it, and saw there were more than a dozen missed calls, including the ones from Kate and a number from a stranger.
"Whose number is this?"
"Kadipur."
"Alright, grab what your mother mentioned, and let's go, make it quick! Move fast! Hurry!"
Yang Yi shouted sternly, stuffing Jenny's phone into his pocket.
Finally, Kate opened a hidden compartment, took out a bank card, and then Yang Yi said, gasping for breath, "Let's get out of here fast, help me, my stomach hurts so much!"
With Kate's assistance, Yang Yi left the room. There was no one outside, and despite the sound of gunfire, no one came out to check.
Yang Yi tucked the gun into his clothes and said urgently, "Let's go downstairs, call Kadipur, do it fast."
Kate, unable to help it, looked back at her mother one last time. Yang Yi pulled her along, whispering, "Someone will come for her, we have to leave quickly."
They went downstairs and got into Kate's car. During this time, they encountered no attacks. After helping Yang Yi into the car, Kate spoke softly, "You hit that killer."
Yang Yi nodded, panting, "Yes, I hit him, but he only got injured, and not seriously. I think I shot him in the waist."
When Yang Yi fired the gun, his reaction was extremely quick. He pulled the trigger almost reflexively. Despite the killer being right in front of him, almost face-to-face, the shot went awry, which made Yang Yi feel incredibly guilty and scared.
Pulling the trigger took much more effort than Yang Yi had anticipated, and the direction his handgun pointed wasn't even correct, but he still involuntarily fired.
Yang Yi had always been a clever person, and it wouldn't be wrong to consider him a genius, that's how he saw himself.
Smart people have the weakness of being proud. Yang Yi thought everything could be solved with brains and violence wasn't necessary. Let others handle the messy fights while he would just take on the role of a commander.
This had long been Yang Yi's way of thinking and habit, and lately, that's exactly what he had seen John Jones doing.
But today, reality had taught Yang Yi a lesson.
Violence can't solve problems, but violence can solve you.
No matter how talented you are, a brainless killer needs only a wire to finish you off, not to mention these killers didn't seem stupid at all.
They're as clever as you but have countless ways to kill you. That's the difference.
For the first time, Yang Yi desperately wanted to make himself stronger. At the very least, he needed to learn how to use a gun. At least, he had to be able to outfight Kate.
At least when someone wanted him dead, he wanted to be the one who survived, not the other way around.
Yang Yi's attitude toward enhancing his own capabilities wasn't urgent before, but now it had become intensely strong. Stepping into the world of spies meant entering a life-and-death game, whether commercial spies or any other kind of spies, a spy is a spy, and a single slip could cost someone their life.
Ideas rapidly flashed through his mind, and after confirming that he must become more formidable and must at least master the most basic skills of a spy, Yang Yi put those thoughts aside. His decision was made, leaving only the question of how to implement it in the future.
The most important thing now was how to survive, and getting stronger was something to consider only after surviving.
Yang Yi picked up Jenny's phone and dialed Kadipur's number.
The call connected quickly, and then Kadipur said urgently, "Jenny, why didn't you answer the phone? Hide quickly, there's been an incident! Is that you, Jenny?"
Kadipur's tone was very urgent, but it soon switched to one of alertness.
After pondering for a moment, Yang Yi said in a low voice, "I'm Ross, Jenny is dead, and I'm now with Kate. We're in great danger, someone is trying to kill us, kill all of us. Where are you? It's best if we're together now."
Kadipur was silent for a moment, then he said softly, "Put Kate on the phone."
Yang Yi handed the phone to Kate. She took the phone, and before speaking, she started crying, then chokingly said, "My mother is dead, Kadipur, someone killed her. We even ran into the killer, Ross got hurt..."
Yang Yi snatched the phone back immediately, and then he said in a stern voice, "Where are you?"
"Near Paddington train station."
"Wait for us, we'll talk after we meet."
Yang Yi hung up the phone, then he said solemnly, "There is a mole among us. It can't be you, it can't be me, your parents are already dead, so that leaves four people: Kadipur, Daniel, Ryan, Wells."
Kate took a deep breath and then said in a trembling voice, "Who could it be? Who could it be!"
Yang Yi said coldly, "The one who survives will be the most suspicious, so right now, you, me, and Kadipur are all under heavy suspicion."
"Me?"
Kate appeared incredibly incredulous and also very angry.
Yang Yi rubbed his belly, a look of pain on his face, and said, "I mean the suspicion is the greatest, but I know I'm not the mole, and I believe you're not either. We can't get in touch with the other three, only Kadipur, so how can I know who among the remaining three is the mole?"
"Why isn't Kadipur the mole?"
Yang Yi took a breath; his stomach still hurt, and even speaking caused a pain there, so his words always carried a painful tremor.
"Kadipur's job is just a taxi driver, and because he drives well and is familiar with London's geography, that's why Mr. Jones selected him as a permanent member, taking on the role of a legman, right?"
"Yes."
"That's right, there are many taxi drivers in London, and Kadipur doesn't have any other skills. In the singers' home, he is a legman who can make a lot of money, but outside of the singers' home, he is nothing. He couldn't possibly achieve better prospects on his own skills elsewhere, so as long as Kadipur isn't stupid, he would not betray his organization."
After sighing, Yang Yi said softly, "So the mole should be one of the remaining three, either Ryan or Wells, who are professional business spies and have very strong individual capabilities. Leaving the singers' home, they might get better development, or even set up their own spy team. And Daniel is a hacker, rumored to be very skilled, right?"
"Extremely skilled."
"That's right, Daniel would live well no matter what, so he also is suspected of being the mole. But it's just suspicion because I think it's improbable for Daniel, who doesn't even want to speak to others, to be the mole."
Kate was silent for a moment and then said softly, "So, what do we do next?"
"Do you know where they all live?"
"No, but Kadipur does."
"Then the rest is easy. We'll find Kadipur first, have him take us to the other three. No one can be contacted now, they might already be dead, so among those three people, whoever is alive is the mole. If all three are dead, then Kadipur is the mole. This reasoning isn't very scientific, but I think the result explains everything."
Kate nodded, then she looked at Yang Yi and said in a low voice, "Then why are we okay? And Kadipur, you think he isn't the mole, but why are we okay then?"
Yang Yi gave a bitter smile and said, "Think about what we did today? We've been running around outside all day, and Kadipur is a taxi driver, he was also running around the streets, so we weren't at home and that's why we narrowly escaped. The reasoning is so obvious..."
Yang Yi habitually wanted to snark at Kate, but he immediately realized that his relationship with her had changed significantly, so he quickly continued, "Now, the most important thing is to switch cars. If the killer can accurately find everyone's homes, then he definitely knows about your car, staying in this car means we're in great danger."
Having said that, Yang Yi looked behind him, then he said softly, "The person who killed your mother, he saw you making the call, he saw you sending the text, so he was at home waiting for us to walk into a trap, but he miscalculated because he didn't expect us to go together and that we had a gun. But why didn't he wait at Mr. Jones's place to kill you and instead waited at your mother's? No, there's something wrong here, let me think, let me think…"
