They were still locked in the dog kennel.
This kennel didn't resemble the ones Zheng Tan had seen at the cat meat restaurant, the one in front of him was clearly more high-end, looking like it was made for pet dogs.
Zheng Tan remembered that today, when he ran from the locust tree to the villagers' houses, he hadn't heard any noise, so this must have happened while he was looking for a phone. However, he had avoided some houses with dogs during his phone search, so whose kennel and dogs these were was a mystery.
He moved his ears, there were no sounds of other people around, nor the scent of strangers.

The door of the kennel wasn't locked, but there was a small latch in place, and the puppies wouldn't know how to open it, trapping them inside for who knows how long.
