Chapter 16 - Chapter 18

The appearance of the system and resurgence of origin plunged the world into great chaos.

The mutated living had characteristics that ordinary people couldn't imagine.

They lacked all rationality and were ferocious, unafraid of death.

Due to mutation, they had special properties and thus hard to destroy. They also had the ability to infect humans, and on top of that, this ability was constantly evolving…

By the time humanity's top officials came back to their senses, the failed ones had already destroyed the communication lines around the country, so each region could only fight its own battles.

Hidden in the very center of a man-made survivor camp in the capital of the country was a research lab completely sealed off from the outside world.

All was silent around the lab, but if someone put their ear to the wall, they'd still be able to faintly discern the miserable shrieks from inside.

Those pained screams came from human beings and animals alike.

The screams emerged sporadically and sounded quite terrifying.

A middle-aged man stood in the lab expressionlessly.

A living male specimen was tied up in front of him. The middle-aged man watched as a colossus, an evolved version of a failed human having already become a Tier 2 creature was released and started nibbling on the human male specimens head.

Throughout this process, the man was injected with psychotropic drugs to ensure that he stayed conscious the entire time.

After a series of blood-curdling screams, the man was turned into a colossus and with a roar, it attacked the middle-aged man who simply materialized a sword and bisected the colossus as easy as cutting butter

"Still a failure… What exactly went wrong?" The headless body slowly fell down in front of the middle-aged man, but he frowned and didn't seem relaxed at all.

According to , the  child was a human who could still retain their rationality even after being infected, but what sounded so simple was actually extremely difficult to do.

In the beginning, failed ones had to eat all of a human's brain in order to infect the human's soul.

But a mere half a month later, the moon thralls' infectious powers had improved greatly, and they could turn humans with just an ordinary scratch.

"But even so, humans still die completely the instant they turn into a failed one…" The middle-aged rubbed his forehead, feeling some headache.

In just half a month before the appearance of the system, he had conducted at least hundreds of experiments, but not a single one succeeded.

Every time, the subjects would lose their consciousness before they were completely infected, and when they woke up next time, they would've already become mindless failed ones

As a top scientist in the world, he was afraid that he was already the person who knew the failed ones the best in the world.

Compared with the normal failed ones, the biggest characteristic of the mutated ones was their lethal infection ability and decrease in intelligence even after evolution

These two were symptoms from the same source—according to his research, it was precisely the failed ones upgraded mutation infection ability that made them unable to think, turning into mindless monsters that could only fight

"Sigh~~ just a little more time, I'm almost there."

A shadow knelt near the man as he went with his experiment

"Sir, we detected intruders in site CD2. Awaiting your orders" the shadow said

"CD2....all specimen left there are merely dregs, it's useless wasting manpower there. Don't do anything and let them go, besides though the specimen left there aren't strong, the king might have already become a Tier 2 so I doubt they would survive "

" But my liege the crystal-" the shadow said

"I've already made my decision " the middle-aged man interupted

"As you wish my liege " said the figure as he disappeared in to the darkness returning the lab in silence

"Sigh don't disappoint me child " came a tired voice from the middle-aged man

Though the attacker was fast, however Zephyr's reaction speed was fast as if he'd anticipated the attack, and his guard was always up so in the face of the sudden attack he did not panic.

Taking a step back, he kicked forward with all his might. His foot struck the shadow's chest while he felt a sharp object cutting the clothes near his stomach.

However, surprisingly, the shadow was not sent flying after being hit and only retreated a couple of steps before disappearing in the darkness

"Lex I know it's you get out" Zephyr shouted, having identified his attacker in an instant

The shadow materialized in to a tall youth with short black hairs, dark eyes and ordinary appearance

"Oh isn't it our newcomer, what are you doing here" sounded the voice of Lex as he had a bored and lazy countenance looking as if their recent confrontation didn't take place

"I'm just exploring and you" Zephyr asked back, maintaining a cautious attitude despite his outwardly calm expression

"Well...just trying to find some medicine and stuff, after all, having too much is never a bad thing" said Lex with a spurious smile

However, just as Zephyr was about to reply, a series of earth-shaking roars came from the sky in the distance, accompanied by a terrifying energy fluctuation.

Whoosh!

A few moments later, under the shocked gazes of countless people, a group of five rushed towards the hospital in a frenzy.

At this moment, they looked extremely miserable, their entire body was covered with hideous scars, and blood was dripping down.

At the same time, behind the group of five was a group of failed ones and mutated creatures alike frantically chasing after them with intent to tear and devour their flesh

There were many of them, almost uncountable due to the foggy weather but one thing for sure was of the ferocity and presence they gave out that dissuaded the duo from even thinking of fighting and instead opted for a retreat to a better terrain.
