Chapter 34 - Dungeon [2]

The deep rumble echoing through the tunnel startled the group. Aiden felt his heart race, adrenaline surging through his veins. It was the sound of imminent danger, of a threat lurking in the darkness. Exactly what he had come for.

"Stay on your guard," he whispered to his companions, his voice barely louder than a breath. "We don't know what awaits us."

Ethan nodded, his fists clenched, ready to unleash his gravitational power at any moment. Mina and Kai instinctively drew closer, their respective elements crackling at their fingertips.

They moved cautiously, each step measured, each breath controlled. The tunnel's oozing walls seemed to close in around them, as if they were descending into the jaws of a monster.

Suddenly, as they rounded a bend, they emerged into a vast cavern. And there, at the center, stood the source of the rumbling.

It was a massive creature, half-man, half-beast, with dark green scaly skin and yellow eyes gleaming with malevolent intelligence. Sharp fangs protruded from its maw, and its hands ended in claws as sharp as daggers.

"A Troglodyte," Kai breathed, a note of fascination mixed with fear in his voice. "I've read descriptions of them in ancient books. They're formidable predators, as strong as they are cunning."

The monster had spotted them. With a roar that shook the walls, it charged, its claws slicing through the air.

Aiden didn't have time to think. His body reacted instinctively, his superhuman speed and strength propelling him to meet the creature.

Dodging a claw swipe that could have torn his head off, Aiden counter-attacked with a devastating punch, aiming for the monster's solar plexus.

The impact was brutal, echoing throughout the cavern. But the Troglodyte took the blow with a grunt before retaliating with a whip-like tail strike.

Aiden flew across the room, slamming hard into the wall. Stars exploded before his eyes, but he got up, refusing to yield.

Meanwhile, his friends had joined the fray. Ethan used his power to weigh down the monster's movements, slowing it down. Mina summoned a spectral eagle that swooped at the creature's eyes, trying to blind it. And Kai unleashed a storm of lightning, searing the opponent's scaly skin.

But despite their combined assaults, the Troglodyte held strong. Its endurance seemed limitless, fueled by a primordial rage.

Aiden gritted his teeth, frantically searching for a strategy. They couldn't afford a war of attrition; the monster would eventually overwhelm them.

That's when his gaze caught a stalactite, right above the creature. An idea took shape in his mind, as desperate as it was brilliant.

"Ethan!" he shouted. "The stalactite! Use your gravity to make it fall on him!"

His friend understood immediately. With a cry of effort, he focused his power on the rocky formation, tearing it from the ceiling.

At the same instant, Aiden leaped, seizing the monster's tail with both hands. With herculean strength, he pulled, unbalancing the creature.

The Troglodyte toppled backward, just as the stalactite came crashing down. The impact was deafening, raising a cloud of dust and debris.

For a moment, a deathly silence reigned in the cavern. Then, slowly, the dust settled, revealing the monster's broken body, crushed.

Aiden collapsed to his knees, panting, yet a triumphant smile stretched his lips.

Suddenly, a notification appeared before his eyes:

"Quest completed: Defeat the Troglodyte. Reward: 500 experience points."

Aiden felt a wave of euphoria wash over him. They had succeeded! And this reward, he felt, brought him one step closer to his ultimate goal.

His friends joined him, both exhausted and exhilarated. Together, they contemplated their victory, the monster's carcass like a macabre trophy.

"That was amazing!" Kai exclaimed, his eyes shining with excitement. "The way you used its own strength against it, Aiden... Masterful!"

Ethan gave him a friendly bump. "That was some serious teamwork. I could do this all day!"

Even Mina, usually so reserved, couldn't hide her enthusiasm. "We still have a lot to learn, but it's a promising start!"

Aiden nodded, savoring the moment. For the first time in a long while, he felt like he belonged. With his friends by his side, and power coursing through his veins, he felt capable of facing anything.

Aiden and his friends resumed their progress into the depths of the dungeon, buoyed by the euphoria of their victory against the Troglodyte.

But as they delved deeper, a disturbing noise began to make itself heard. It was a diffuse sound, like a distant rumble, punctuated by what sounded like dozens, no, hundreds of small, shrill cries.

"What is that?" Mina whispered, a note of apprehension in her voice, unconsciously drawing closer to Aiden.

Kai frowned, searching his encyclopedic memory of dungeon creatures.

"It sounds like a swarm. Probably goblins or kobolds. They're not very strong individually, but their numbers can quickly become problematic."

Aiden felt his heart race, torn between the excitement of a new challenge. "Stay together," he ordered. "And be prepared for anything."

They continued, all their senses on alert, following the growing noise that seemed to emanate from the walls themselves. The air grew heavier, laden with an acrid smell of sweat and disturbed earth.

Suddenly, as they rounded a corridor, they emerged into an immense cavern. And there, before their astonished eyes, swarmed a veritable tide of small, squat green creatures, armed with rudimentary spears and crude wooden shields. They were everywhere, on the walls, hanging from the ceiling, covering the ground in a seething, screeching mass.

"Goblins!" Kai exclaimed, his voice mixing fascination and apprehension.

The creatures spotted them immediately. Their cries redoubled in intensity, and in an instant, a howling green wave rushed towards them, brandishing their makeshift weapons.

Aiden and his friends instinctively fell into a combat formation, back to back, their powers crackling around them like a shield. But faced with this seething tide, Aiden couldn't suppress a shiver of apprehension.

They were numerous, so numerous. Like an unstoppable wave ready to engulf them. Could they hold, just the four of them, against this onslaught?

Aiden clenched his fists, feeling the power pulsing in his veins, responding to his call. He glanced at his companions, reading in their eyes the same determination, the same refusal to yield.

Then, with a sense of defiance, Aiden rushed to meet the horde, his friends on his heels. And the clash of the two forces shook the very foundations of the dungeon, resounding like the rumble of an underground storm.

The battle engaged, brutal and chaotic. And as Aiden let the dark delight of combat wash over him, little by little the four members of the group began to disperse, each fighting on their own.
