Chapter 39 - 2nd floor

Aiden and his companions delved deeper into the bowels of the dungeon, their senses on high alert, ready to react at the slightest sign of danger. The corridors grew narrower, more winding, as if the dungeon itself was trying to mislead them, to trap them.

Suddenly, around a bend, they emerged into a vast circular room. In the center stood an imposing creature, half-man, half-bull, armed with a massive double-edged axe. Its red eyes glowed with malevolent intelligence, and its hooves scraped the stone floor, eager for a fight.

"A minotaur!" Kai breathed, a mixture of fascination and fear in his voice. "A powerful and cunning creature, not to be underestimated."

Aiden nodded, already analyzing the situation. The minotaur was sizing them up, seeming to gauge their worth as opponents. It was clear that it would not be as easy to defeat as the stone goblins.

"We attack together," Aiden ordered. "Ethan, use your gravity to destabilize it. Mina, summon your creatures to harass it. Kai, focus your lightning on its hand, try to make it drop its weapon. I'll take care of fighting it hand-to-hand." He had started thinking a lot about effective team strategies since their last fight, and he was happy to be able to test it here.

His friends nodded, getting into position. Aiden could sense their determination, their trust in each other. They were a team, united and complementary, the fights bringing them closer together.

The minotaur charged, a bestial bellow bursting from its throat. Its axe cleaved the air, a promise of death and devastation.

But they were ready. Ethan projected his power, weighing down the monster's movements, making it slower, more clumsy. Mina summoned a swarm of spectral crows that swooped down on the minotaur's eyes, blinding and disorienting it. Kai unleashed a barrage of lightning, targeting the hand, making its grip tremble.

And Aiden, buoyed by his new power, rushed to meet his opponent. His movements were fluid, precise, each dodge, each blow calculated to exploit the monster's weaknesses.

For long minutes, they exchanged blows. The minotaur was powerful, its axe devastating, but little by little, it weakened, worn down by the combined assaults of four people.

And when an opening presented itself, Aiden seized it. With a prodigious leap, he propelled himself onto the monster's back, clinging to its horns. Before the minotaur could react, he sank his claws into its neck, tearing the flesh until he reached the spinal cord.

With a final howl of agony, the minotaur collapsed, its life pouring onto the stone floor in a scarlet pool.

Aiden straightened up, panting but triumphant. His friends joined him, the exhilaration of victory shining in their eyes, not even paying attention to how he had killed the monster.

"We make one hell of a team!" Ethan exclaimed, clapping Aiden on the back. "Nothing can resist us!"

But their joy was short-lived. Already, a deep rumble was rising from the depths of the dungeon, making the walls tremble. A rumble that soon turned into a chorus of bestial howls, an infernal racket.

"What is that?" Mina worried, peering into the darkness of the corridor.

The answer was not long in coming. A tide of creatures emerged from the gloom, surging towards them like a tidal wave of claws and fangs. Goblins, young orcs, indescribable creatures, all united in a destructive fury.

"Scatter!" Aiden shouted, realizing they couldn't hold out against such a horde. "Everyone on their own, lure them and eliminate them in small groups!"

It was a desperate strategy, but they had no choice. In an instant, they separated, each drawing a part of the horde in their wake.

Aiden ran, plunging into a maze of corridors, a pack of monsters on his heels. His heart was pounding, adrenaline pulsing through his veins like liquid fire.

And as he ran, something inside him broke free. His dhampir nature, his thirst for blood, long contained, exploded with devastating force. It was as if a dam had given way in his mind, unleashing a torrent of rage and hunger, drawn by the fight.

He spun around, a bestial growl rising from his throat. His eyes gleamed scarlet, his fangs glinting in the gloom. He was no longer Aiden the student. He was Aiden the predator, the monster thirsting for carnage.

The creatures skidded to a halt, surprised by this turnaround. But already, Aiden was upon them, a whirlwind of claws and fangs, each blow a bringer of brutal death.

He slashed, bit, tore, losing himself in a bloody frenzy. Bodies piled up around him, blood sprayed, splattering the walls. It was a terrible and magnificent spectacle, a symphony of raw violence.

Little by little, using his rage with more control, Aiden began to experiment, combining his new attributes with the techniques learned in class. He was trying to control this bestial side. His claw strikes turned into precise combos, his dodges into fluid movements. He was learning, adapting, trying to combine his learned techniques with the bestial strength he possessed.

And when the last monster fell, reduced to bloody shreds, Aiden stood amid the carnage, panting but strangely serene. He had tasted his true power, brushed his potential. And despite the horror of the scene, he couldn't deny the dark exhilaration that filled him.

"I managed to keep some awareness while my bestial side was out," he said to himself, a slight sense of pride.

Slowly, he retraced his steps, following the trail of his companions. He found them at the entrance to a new room, exhausted but victorious as well. Together, they crossed the threshold, ready to face the ultimate challenge of this level.

But as they entered the room, one thing became clear: it was empty. No final monster, no glittering treasure. Just a simple pedestal, on which rested a message carved in stone.

"Congratulations, adventurers. You have triumphed over the trials of the second level. Don't expect more, this is only level two."

Aiden ran his fingertips over the words, a shiver running down his spine.

As they left the room, taking the path back to the surface, Aiden couldn't help but feel a mixture of excitement and apprehension.
