Deiji was surprised when she reached the top and saw her companions with their hands raised facing men holding different weapons pointed in their direction.
"Who are you? Where did you come from?" asked a man who Deiji estimated to be in his late 40s. His hair was thinning at the front.
"Why did you think of climbing up here?" another man, younger than the first, asked.
They couldn't answer the question, so they remained silent. But the men in front of them were persistent. Yuki stepped forward and spoke for their group.
"We're from a girls and boys dormitory not far from here. We escaped from zombies last night until we reached here on top of the wall," Yuki explained and pointed to where they came from.
"And we followed the people who were with us last night. But... There's someone who got bitten, and everyone ran away. We decided to come back here to find food for the baby," Yuki explained anxiously.
"Baby?" Another man from the other group asked.
Glenn showed the baby, who smiled at the other group.
The men gradually lowered their weapons.
"There's no food here," a old woman said flatly.
"But this building is big. If I'm not mistaken, it has five floors. It's impossible for there to be no food in this building," Deiji argued.
"We are currently standing on what you can see is a gym. This building is a small school for kindergarteners and nursery," explained an old woman.
"And I am the Principal," she continued and introduced herself to the five of them.
"Where is the cafeteria of this building?" Michelle asked.
In her mind, all schools have a canteen or cafeteria, big or small.
"It's on the ground floor," a woman holding the hand of a young girl who looked about 9 years old said.
"No food?" Michael asked.
"There's plenty," the Principal assured him.
"But why did Nanay say there's none?" Michael persisted, pointing to the old woman who said there's no food.
"There's plenty of food in the cafeteria. But there are zombies inside, so nobody's going down," the man who first questioned them earlier explained.
Glenn thought they would die of hunger if they didn't think of going down to get food.
Glenn removed the jacket around his neck and gave the baby to Yuki.
"We'll go down," Glenn bravely said to them.
They just looked away from him. Fear and sadness were evident in their eyes.
"If you don't eat, you'll still die," Deiji retorted.
"Maybe help is coming. We can wait," a man said.
"Yeah, going out there will only make our deaths come sooner," an old lady agreed.
"The question is, will someone help us? How will they help us if they don't even know we need help?" Glenn cornered them.
The people seemed to ponder because none of their cellphones had any signal.
"I'll get food anyway," Deiji said confidently and looked at the men in front of her.
Their eyes seemed to say 'shame on you. a woman like me will go out. you big men are too scared.'
Deiji succeeded, and a few raised their hands to join her.
"You guys stay here. We'll go down. We'll come back once everything's settled, and you can come down," Glenn instructed them firmly, seeming to be the leader of the large group.
"Yuki, you stay here," Deiji told Yuki and exchanged a glance with her friends Michael and Michelle.
"You'll eat now, baby," Deiji said to the baby, who just laughed at her.
The baby felt better now that his diaper was changed, cleaned of poop. Yuki used a cloth as a makeshift diaper from the lockers of the children studying here.
"What's his name, Ate?" the young girl asked Yuki.
Yuki couldn't answer because she didn't know the baby's name. It wasn't given to her.
"Zebby," Michelle suddenly interjected. Yuki, Michelle, and Michael exchanged glances.
"Hi, Zebby. I'm Darlene," the girl introduced herself to Zebby, even though Zebby couldn't understand her. She just played with the baby while waiting for her father and other companions.
On the other hand, the group of volunteers going down to the cafeteria carefully cleared out the zombies blocking the hallways. If there were zombies in a room, they closed it to prevent them from coming out.
"It's a good thing there aren't many here," Deiji commented, which her companions agreed with.
"How old are you?" Glenn asked Deiji's questioner. He thought the man was in his 20s, just like him, but a few years older.
"21, why?" she asked, giving him an attitude to turn him off and keep him from hitting on her.
Glenn secretly chuckled at Deiji's attitude towards the man who was clearly interested in her. Deiji did this to men to keep them away because her goal in life was to finish school.
They safely went down to the cafeteria and celebrated quietly.
"There's so much food. I'm so hungry," a chubby companion happily exclaimed.
"Hey! No cutting!" a man, presumably his friend, stopped him.
The two were running when suddenly three zombies appeared and surrounded them. Everyone panicked. The two were shocked. The chubby guy grabbed a chair and blocked one end while holding the chair facing the zombie near them.
His friend hid behind him because he couldn't run since one came from behind them that they didn't notice when they entered.
Others quickly rushed to help, led by Glenn and Deiji.
Glenn grabbed one zombie that two men were now holding and prevented it from biting him.
Glenn smashed its head on the floor tiles until its brains spilled out. The man who was attacked earlier was disgusted by what he did.
Deiji kicked the zombie in front of the chubby guy who was trying to get closer to her but couldn't because of the chair blocking its way. The zombie flew and fell down due to Deiji's strong kick, and she stabbed its head with a knife.
Meanwhile, another zombie was being beaten by other men. Glenn even helped them to finish it off.
"Let's just bring the food upstairs. It's dangerous here," a man suggested.
"Let's do that," Glenn agreed.
They each carried food. As Deiji said, 'the more, the better,' so they each carried the food assigned to them by Glenn.
"Deiji, you're in charge of the pizzas and sandwiches," the girl nodded.
"You two, take care of the drinks. Bring plenty if you don't want me to leave you behind," Glenn threatened the two who were racing earlier. They were scared, so they quickly followed him.
