Chapter 6 - The night of joy and grief

Everyone was overjoyed when their spouses, siblings, and friends who volunteered to go down to the ground floor returned with food.

"We just brought it. It's too dangerous in the cafeteria," everyone stopped at Glenn's words, but nodded and smiled.

Everyone was delighted at the abundance of food in front of them. Gratitude filled everyone's eyes.

"Is there any milk for the baby?" Yuki asked, catching Glenn's attention.

Everyone looked at each other as the baby kept crying non-stop. It seemed like it couldn't survive on just chocolate all day, especially just licking it.

Everyone felt sad and pitied the baby. They knew it couldn't eat solid food yet, only milk.

"Ta-da!" Deiji exclaimed as she slowly took out a small bag she saw in the cafeteria containing a bottle full of milk and three bottles of formula.

Everyone laughed and cheered at Deiji's little stunt. It seemed like Yuki felt relieved because she was feeling sorry for the baby.

She quickly prepared it using the mineral water brought by the men. Then she filled the bottle with milk to feed the baby.

Happiness returned to everyone as they enjoyed the abundance of food in front of them. They engaged in lively conversations, teasing, and joking with each other.

On the other hand, the chubby guy secretly looked for his friend while eating. Just a while ago, they were sitting together, but now he suddenly disappeared.

He stood up after finishing his meal and went to the men's restroom. He paused when he saw bloodstains on one of the CR doors. He peeked from below and was surprised to see familiar shoes. It was his friend, and he was sure of it.

He carefully and quietly entered the adjacent cubicle and silently sat on the bowl. He wanted to scare his friend.

Unexpectedly, he was the one who got surprised and frightened when he saw his friend trying to make the wound on his palm bleed. He carefully examined the wound and felt dismayed when he saw it looked like a human bite.

"Dave..." his friend said in a sad and weak voice, calling out his name.

"Roy!" Dave exclaimed in surprise and quickly hid his hand, then left the CR and faced his friend on the other side.

"Roy, what are you doing there?" Dave casually asked Roy as if nothing happened. As if his friend didn't discover anything from him.

Roy's heavy body hugged Dave as he cried.

"Sorry. Sorry!" Roy could only say sorry to his friend and cried.

Dave also cried and hugged his friend back.

"It's not your fault," Dave replied tearfully and let go of his friend.

"I promised to protect you." Roy cried again and hugged Dave tightly.

The two of them are childhood friends. Where one goes, the other follows. They can't be separated. When the zombie outbreak occurred, they were together chatting and hanging out at the court near their house. It was too late when they saw their respective families covered in blood and dead. Roy promised Dave to protect him since then because Roy knew Dave was clumsy and he needed to watch over and protect him. But in an instant, he suddenly realized that Roy failed to protect the only family left to him.

It turns out that Dave was bitten by a zombie earlier when they went down to the cafeteria without their colleagues noticing.

"Let's not tell them," Roy suggested, scared that Dave would be kicked out.

"It's dangerous, Roy. If they don't know, they won't be aware. I might hurt someone," Dave stated the fact and he was scared that he would hurt Roy too.

"You already made yourself bleed, Dave. The virus might come out," Roy insisted.

Roy couldn't do anything but agree because he understood his friend's feelings. Both of their families died, and he was the only one left by Roy's side, then he would leave him alone.

He cried again thinking that he would leave Roy alone in that hellish situation. Roy hugged him again to comfort him as he also cried out of grief.

Roy smiled at Dave and left first. He saw those groups who were the first people they came with before Yuki and the others popped up out of nowhere.

Yuki danced Zebby to put the baby to sleep after it finished drinking its milk, while Michelle slept on Michael's lap. Michael really spoiled her twin sister.

Glenn saw Deiji standing near the window they used to climb a while ago, crossing her arms. She seemed to be lost in thought.

"What were you thinking?" Glenn asked Deiji.

Deiji turned to the boy and rolled her eyes.

"You're nosy too, aren't you?" Deiji pretended to be annoyed with Glenn.

Glenn chuckled and leaned against the wall beside the window.

"You're like a sibling to me," Glenn replied briefly but sadly.

"Why?" the girl asked him curiously.

"She looks brave and strong. She also has that tomboy attitude towards boys. Same with you," Glenn kindly described Deiji's personality.

Deiji saw the light in the boy's eyes as he described his sister's personality. She noticed that he liked talking about her and showing off his sister.

"Where is she?" Deiji asked him, which made her feel sad.

"She's dead," Glenn said, avoiding eye contact to stop the tears threatening to escape his eyes, but Deiji noticed.

"You look strong also. But you're soft," Deiji teased him as she didn't like an awkward topic.

Glenn just smirked at her, thinking that this girl must be protected. He doesn't want to fail to protect Deiji too. Glenn saw her like his little sister, and he didn't want to fail again protecting the girl he treated like a sister to him.
