Yuki's eyes snapped open at the sudden cry of a baby she was holding. She almost startled, remembering she didn't have a baby of her own. She was about to stand up while still holding the baby, but then she realized she was only sitting on top of a high wall, leaning against Deiji, her roommate. Unable to stand up, she just blinked her eyes.
She saw a nightmare she'd never imagined happening in real life: a horde of zombies trying to reach them. With that, a flashback came to her mind, scenarios of how they ended up in that situation.
Suddenly, Glenn turned to her. "Let's go there," he said, pointing to the farthest part of the forest.
Only then did Yuki notice the people also climbing down from the opposite wall and walking towards the direction Glenn pointed to.
Yuki remembered the day her husband drove his car to take her to Sitio De Villasarza. There was a strange white and tall barrier around the sitio made of iron. People were already walking towards that direction, thinking there was a way for them to escape from zombies.
Yuki nodded and woke up her companions. She felt reassured knowing they had another man with them to protect them, especially now that they had a baby with them.
"Why?" Deiji quickly asked Yuki, as if she forgot that they were surrounded by zombies.
"Let's go there," she said, repeating Glenn's words earlier and pointing to the direction people were going.
"What's there? Why are they going there? Aren't we going to be rescued?" Michelle asked quickly and anxiously, still scared from the events. Everyone fell silent after Michelle's questions. None of them knew what was happening, and they had no news from outside Sitio De Villasarza.
"We don't have signals. We can't ask for help," Glenn calmly explained, which made Michelle cry even more.
"I think it's planned. It's fucking well planned. They used a high paying job and cheap supplies and low rent, electricity, and water bills to lure us here," Deiji said through gritted teeth, visibly angry with each word she uttered.
Deiji glanced at the zombies below them before turning away. "So we need to go there?" she asked again, looking at each of her companions.
They all looked at the baby as it suddenly cried loudly.
"Let's go. They're all gathering because of the baby's noise," Glenn said firmly, and then jumped and crossed to the other side of the wall.
He helped each of them down, especially the women. Michael envied Glenn. Compared to him, Glenn looked strong and sturdy. Meanwhile, he was just a gamer who sat all day.
After they all climbed down, they started walking towards the obstacle they needed to cross to get out and escape from the zombies. Little did they know that one of the people who crossed from the other side of the wall was bitten.
They had been walking for hours, but they were still not where they wanted to be. They had no food, no proper sleep, and not even a drop of water since last night. Their bodies were weak as they continued to walk along with the other people from the opposite wall.
"My feet hurt," Michelle complained.
"I'm hungry," Deiji suddenly complained, which made Yuki, Michelle, and Michael smile. They knew how much Deiji loved to eat. She was indeed a glutton, as their dorm mates called her. Yet no matter how much she ate, she never gained weight.
The baby cried loudly again in Yuki's arms. She estimated the baby to be around 4-5 months old, as she had two children of her own. This time, the baby's cry was louder and seemed relentless. They had no choice but to stop to check on the baby and rest for a while.
"Baby's hungry," Yuki said suddenly.
"I told you. These times are really hunger-inducing," Deiji joked to her friends. She wanted to lighten the mood for everyone, even though she herself wanted to leave that hell.
"The baby, it's normal for them to get hungry every now and then. For you, it's not normal," Yuki retorted to Deiji, who just shrugged it off.
"Oh!" They were all surprised when Glenn handed Yuki a chocolate with the label burnburone.
"I had a date last night. I brought flowers and chocolates for her. Isn't that what you girls like?" Glenn suddenly explained to his companions, who gave him puzzled looks.
Yuki took the chocolates and licked it slightly before giving it to the baby to quiet it down. She knew it was not good for the baby, especially since its stomach was empty, but they needed to quiet the baby for now.
"How sweet," Michael teased his classmate.
"Uh, where is she now?" he asked again.
"She was caught. I was just a minute earlier than the four of you who climbed the wall. And I didn't get a chance to save her. She was bitten before I could react. I was such a coward," Glenn explained sadly to them.
They all fell silent at the awkwardness of their conversation. Glenn lost someone, and they lost everyone from the dorm.
"Ahhhhhhhh!" Everyone stopped walking and looked back at the source of the scream.
Their anxiety returned when they heard the familiar scream and cry. Glenn stepped forward to clearly see the cause. He saw a girl biting someone's neck. A zombie. He whispered to himself.
"Run!" He shouted, and they found themselves running again to save their lives.
"What happened?" Deiji asked Glenn as they continued running together.
Michelle and Michael were in front, still holding each other's hand. While Deiji and Glenn were on Yuki's side to protect her as she held the baby.
"How?" Yuki also asked, but Glenn couldn't answer yet because even he was puzzled unless there's also someone who crossed infected.
But Glenn was still wondering why it didn't turn earlier, like what happened to the guy who died last night. Maybe it depends on how your body reacts to the virus before it reaches your brain.
"There!" Michelle pointed ahead.
Finally, they saw the very tall white barrier made of iron. It was easy to climb because there were footholds and handholds.
They hastened their pace because the shouting and screaming were getting louder and more numerous.
"Stop!" They reached the fence they wanted to climb, but they were stunned to silence by Deiji's loud scream.
They looked at Deiji and saw her stepping back. She looked around at the people who were planning to climb the metal fence.
They were all shocked to see everyone holding onto the metal trembling.
"Fuck!" Michael exclaimed and stepped back. If anything, he and Michelle would be the first to go.
