After finishing his words, Locke paid no further attention to Daisy Goldberg and walked towards the door. Though she looked like a celestial being, he wasn't about to indulge her. If she followed him out, he'd reveal his discovery to her; if not, he'd consider it as if nothing had happened.
As Locke stepped out, he saw Detective Mona, David, Nathan, and a few others all wearing smirks, clearly prepared to witness his embarrassment. Suppressing the urge to flip them off, he gave them a cool glance, a mischievous smile playing on his lips, and headed to the other side of the corridor because he heard footsteps behind him.
Stopping about ten meters away from David and the others, Locke turned around and saw Daisy Goldberg striding towards him, her demeanor icy and oppressive.
Stopping three steps away from Locke, Daisy stood firm, staring coldly at him, somewhat resentful that she had conceded to this rookie cop. "You'd better not play any tricks, or you'll be receiving a call from your supervisor..."
Interrupting her again, Locke said, "You didn't install the camera inside the Russian nesting doll yourself, did you?"
"...," Daisy's proud expression faltered for a moment, somewhat cute in its sudden vulnerability. "What are you talking about?"
Locke glanced expressionlessly at David and the others, who were nervously watching them. He calmly continued, "There's a camera inside the nesting doll on the top shelf between the galaxy and pyramid ornaments..."
The camera was angled perfectly to overlook Daisy's position. He was hundred percent sure someone else had installed it.
Daisy's face turned serious instantly. She took a deep breath and turned to walk back to her office.
Locke cautioned, "You'd better not touch anything on the shelf..."
He knew she was going to verify it herself, but as a seasoned cleaner, how could he have been wrong?
Because once a cleaner was caught on camera, there was only one way to go: downhill.
So, whenever he entered a room, he would check for surveillance first. This habit was ingrained in his blood.
He had another talent: an unusually keen sensitivity to cameras, always able to spot them first.
Mona and David had realized something was amiss with Locke. Seeing Daisy leave, they hurried over.
"What happened, Locke?" Mona asked.
Locke was about to reply when Daisy came back out of her office. Her face dark, she said to Locke, "Officer, until I decide whether to report this or not, I don't want anyone else to know about it..."
"This matter concerns the reputation of Jeff Markie Law Firm. If necessary, I will personally contact Director Miller..."
Wow, she was dropping names.
Garrett Miller was the chief of LAPD's Western Division, directly in charge of the Wilshire District, which was Locke's boss's boss's boss.
But Locke wasn't intimidated. "Of course, that's your right. But may I ask when you'll be available to take the statement?"
Daisy gave Locke a deep look, instantly understanding his intention in revealing the camera incident: to get her to cooperate in recording the statement.
Feeling somewhat absurd, she hesitated for a moment and then replied, "I'll personally go to the Wilshire Police Station tomorrow..."
Locke nodded in satisfaction. "Thank you for your cooperation."
With that, he signaled to David and Mona that they could leave.
Soon, six officers escorted the poor divorcee to the elevator. Everyone knew what awaited him. The atmosphere was heavy with silence.
Mona and David didn't inquire further about what had happened between Locke and Daisy. Daisy's warning just now was also a hint for them not to pry.
"Beep..."
As Locke was about to enter the elevator, Mona's walkie-talkie suddenly buzzed. "Captain, received, okay..."
"Locke, David, wait a moment..."
Locke and Nathan stood guard outside Daisy's door, and a cordon had been set up outside the office.
Mona brought two cups of coffee over. She handed one to Locke and one to Nathan.
"Try the high-end coffee from the law firm..."
"Thanks..."
Mona casually asked, "Locke, how did you spot the camera?"
Since Daisy had already called the police, Locke naturally didn't conceal the fact that he had discovered the camera.
Taking a sip of coffee, Locke replied casually, "I'm a quarterback, my observation skills have always been good..."
Mona gave him a thumbs up. "Well done!"
Curious, Locke asked, "What's Miss Goldberg's background?"
Mona shrugged. "How would I know? Anyway, she's someone important, or else a case like this wouldn't have mobilized the detectives' team..."
Locke noticed David staring at him strangely, paused for a moment, and then immediately realized that as one of the partners of Hamm Law Firm, Marian might know about Daisy Goldberg's background.
But Locke had no intention of calling Marian to inquire about Daisy Goldberg's background. It wasn't his business, and he wouldn't bother.
He revealed the camera incident mainly to get Daisy Goldberg to cooperate in recording the statement.
Thinking of this, he couldn't help but smirk, a meaningful smile on his lips.
Soon, the detectives' team arrived. The leader was a middle-aged man with black hair, a serious expression, deep eyes, a hawk-like nose, and a mole on his right cheek.
Behind him was a young white woman, sturdy in build, with golden hair tied into a ponytail, looking very capable.
They were followed by members of the Evidence Division, carrying boxes of various sizes.
"Captain Tom..."
"Detective Sophia..."
"..."
Seeing that Tom Williams, the captain of the Detective Bureau's Homicide Division, had come in person, Mona's expression tightened a bit, and she greeted them proactively.
Captain Tom responded with a nod, his gaze sweeping over the office before stopping at the bookshelf on the opposite side.
Seeing Mona's gaze fixed on the Russian nesting dolls, he asked, "So, the camera is inside that Russian doll?"
He had only received a briefing that a camera had been found in the office of a certain important person, without being told its specific location.
Mona nodded. She stared at the nesting doll for a moment before noticing the camera hidden in its right eye.
"Very well hidden!"
Captain Tom commented, then turned his eagle
-like gaze to Locke, who was still dutifully guarding the door, and asked in a slightly questioning tone, "So, rookie, how did you find this camera?"
