"Don't get in my way, Conrad, I need to talk to her." Keegan's fangs were showing. This boy was no joke.
"Clam down!" I yelled.
Ricky was hiding his daughter behind him, "What is this, Keegan?"
Keegan sheeted, "Your daughter, scheming something that I clearly not to touch long ago!"
"I.. I don't understand." Stella whispered, and I knew she was in shock too.
"Shut your mouth!" Keegan was about to push me but I was not taking a step back.
"Calm down, Keegan!" I looked directly into his eyes. And as soon as his eyes meet mine, His body went back to a more normal condition, with no fangs showing.
He stared back at Stella with hatred. "What did you do to Kara!"
Stella was gasping. She must have realized something as she denied his words. "Keegan! That.. that's not me." Her voice was shuttered.
"She is under your care!" His voice echoed throughout the room.
"No! Keegan, you're wrong! It's not me. It's all Rebecca."
I turned my head back. "What is this Stella?"
She looked at me, with her panic expression. "I didn't do anything to her, Conrad."
Keegan shouted back, "That's fucking bullshit! You pushed her so she could die slowly."
He took a step back away from my grasp, and screamed from his lungs. He grabbed his hair as himself looked so disorientated.
Kara Machen. I didn't know what happened with her, but I know it was never easy for him if it's about her. I'd seen how much he cared for that girl, but I thought it stopped long ago. It should've stopped long ago.
Ten years ago, when her father was proven to provide the poison that killed our mother, It was the time that Keegan ran into drugs. She was the first reason my brother lost his sanity. He was on his episode crying over the end of whatever relationship he had with Kara, not to mention the grief over our mother.
"I need more explanation than this, Keegan. Your anger will not solve any more problems." I tried to calm him as his breath was still uneven, a reaction from his complicated heart.
"You know Conrad, the time her father was sentenced to death, I pleaded to save her life." He spoke, reminding me about that past case. "Father as our Alpha, agree to keep her alive and give her to you. And you promise me not to hurt her."
True. "I did, I told her to work under Stella. She's brilliant, and she told me she wanted to try working with the med team. I didn't get any complaints from her until now." It's not a secret anymore in our pack, how a Machen dedicated their family to the medical field from generation to generation.
"Why do you think she never complained, Conrad?" He asked me as his face turned toward where Stella stood. "You! Did you cut out the medical check up for her? Knowing she works in poisons and drug experiments?"
I saw how nervous Stela was, "I… Keegan, She said she didn't need it. She said she could handle the check up by herself."
Keegan laughed in a sarcastic way, "Do you think i'm stupid? Really Stella? Then how about the arrangement in the house, where you told her to put the poisonous herbs in the open space like that, so you can pray that she will accidently touch them in the wrong way, making her fall to her own death."
Stella widened her eyes, and I hope what Keegan said was just a misunderstanding. This woman never once made a problem before. "Stella," I called out. "Did you neglect her health?"
She shook her head, "No Conrad, Kara said she was okay with the arrangement. It was Rebecca. She said that girl will be fine."
Goddess, so it's true. "Don't try to blame someone, Stella. You're about to be my mate. You know what that means."
What a vicious scheme they did. This woman was supposed to be the future Luna from our pack. And I don't appreciate her going against my word. "I told you to take care of her. I put her under your team so she can live a little, Stella. Not dying slowly."
Stella came towards me, grabbing my arms as her eyes pleaded. "No, Conrad. It's not. You have to ask Rebecca about that. She was the mastermind. I just.. I just.." her eyes were wandering around.
This was so disappointing. I took my arms away from her.
"No, Conrad.." She shook her head, and I saw a glimpse of tears in her eyes.
"You disobey my words." I said the point.
"Conrad.. " Ricky was there beside her daughter. "You know, we don't have to argue up to this stage over a slave. She was nothing anyways. She could die tomorrow and no one will care."
I eyed this clueless old man, "Do you think you're the one who made the decision here?"
Ricky lowered his eyes. Coward. He even couldn't stand up for his own daughter.
Stella grabbed my hand again, "But still Conrad, arguing over a slave is ridiculous in the first place."
"Don't worry, Stella." Keegan said as his voice was harsh. "I will submit the plea for formal investigation. Do you think I didn't check? There've been an annual fund for her health check up for years. I wonder where that fund is going?"
Keegan did really put his attention to this. He looked at me, and asked. "Don't you agree, my brother?"
I took the step away from Stella. "This has to be investigated thoroughly."
"Conrad.. Please.. It was Rebeca.." She begged.
"Let's see that fact under the investigation." Keegan tilted his chin up before turning back his shoulder and leaving the manor. But before he took the step away from the door, he looked back to me and said. "You can't protect your slave. I don't think I can protect mine either."
I knew who he was implying to. Eliana. I was about to chase him, but Stella held me back. "Conrad, I didn't do that." She pleaded once again.
I snapped her hands away, saying nothing and quickly left. Nothing that she said would change a single thing right now. The investigation would prove everything. I ran slightly to the front door, but Keegan was nowhere to be seen. He was gone already.
"Fuck this!" I screamed. If he hurt her hair even once, If he really did. I wondered what I could do to him.
Eliana..
