Kareena's countenance softened. He may have been an 18 year old boy but seeing him like this, he was no different to an innocent little boy who always looked up to his big sister.
She smiled exposing her pearly whites, "Eighteen and you're still a cry baby."
"I'm not crying!" He replied all too quickly and looked away to get rid of the evidence. "And it's Ashton. It sounds cooler...."
She rolled her eyes and decided to taunt him with a curious question, "So, how long are you staying..... Asher?"
"Asht-" he glared only to receive a smirk from her. "I'll be leaving on Sunday. I've got a bunch of assignments due on Monday. By the way, you heard about the President's son?"
"Mm."
"Is there a chance you guys will take the case?" he asked, his eyes full of awe as he remembered the cool footage of the man he saw early on.
"By us, do you mean the agency or our team?"
"Your team."
"We have no control over the cases the agency assigns to us. But to answer your question, no, we don't handle cases like that. Besides, Homeland is already on it. They'll handle it within themselves", she said, very assured.
"So what type of cases do you guys take?"
"We-", she caught herself quick enough to realize the answer she was just about to give. He blinked innocently at her when she smirked. "Nice try."
"I almost had you!" He punched the air in frustration.
"May is a bad influence on you", she shook her head.
"Ugh!" He groaned, his face pulled in annoyance and she only smiled. His annoyance was soon replaced with a frown. "I'll be right back."
The tired girl kicked off her heels and relaxed on the sofa. Her eyes followed along to the movie playing and she soon recognized it especially when the black and yellow sports car transformed into a giant mute robot. "Is this Transformers?"
"Yeah!" He shouted back from wherever he was.
"Asher!" She whined.
"I thought you would get the hint when I said I'm making chicken." He came back in the room with an ice pack.
"Is it that bad?" She received it and placed it on the bump on her forehead.
"It's hard to ignore", he replied. "What happened to you?"
"Christopher happened", she leaned back in the seat and let out a tired sigh.
"He HIT YOU?!"
"No, but he did do something stupid", she answered only to receive a scary questioning gaze. She waved her hand in dismissal. "Nothing for you to worry about. He hasn't called you, has he?"
"No, I never gave him my number." Kareena's brows went up at this. "I never liked him", he shrugged before adding more seriously. "He's now trending for begging you to take him back in front of the restaurant while security carried him out and cussing out the customers! You should get a restraining order."
"He's what?" She sat up from shock. That was trending? This man..!!
"I think I can find the video", Asher retrieved his phone from his pocket to show her. She leaned in to watch when-
Beep! Beep! Beep!
An alarming beeping sound went off from her phone. Even with the movie playing in the background, the beeping echoed like it was the only sound in the room.
"Are you going away?" He asked, his eyes on Kareena's phone that had stopped beeping.
Kareena put away the ice pack, picked up her shoes and her bag. After a long day at work and Christopher adding to the stresses, she had hoped the day would end with her having a relaxing evening. But now, her other job sought her attention.
Asher had asked her the same question he did whenever she was called in but this time around, she could not help but grow nervous. Why? She did not know.
So she gave a simple, "We'll see."
