Chapter 39 - OLD NEW MEMORIES

/"Looks like you two are the reason this infant thinks he can open his mouth and spout a whole lot of bullshit to me. I was going to teach him a lesson but it's only right I teach his guidance the same lesson for raising a bad seed. Don't you think so, sleepy pop and bearded mama?"\ Vox said then his friends chuckled.

Mosey first grimaced then stroked his full and proud beard a few times before grunting.

"Kove, did you understand any of that?" Mosey asked.

Kove shrugged.

"Like I said, I'm still learning and it gets harder to understand when it's spoken fluently." He said disappointedly.

"So nothing at all? Even a word would have been okay but nothing? Damn, that's a bummer" Mosey said and Kove sighed.

"Well, I think I heard something in there about a mother and father but I'm not sure about the context," Kove replied.

Meanwhile, Vox and his friends wondered why the two were discussing between themselves, instead of addressing them. They thought that Avery was an errand boy for those two which is why he didn't know how to speak Hepshi, but as for Mosey and Kove, they should… Right?

Almost all the guests in the Velvet Serpent knew how to speak Hephsi, but, because it wasn't the mother tongue for some of them, they preferred to speak in their mother tongue when in the establishment.

The comfort that brings makes them want to come back to the establishment over and over again, which is why Bell instructed the girls to learn the major different languages and she invested a lot of resources to make sure they could.

"Was he insulting our parents or something?" Mosey asked and Kove shrugged.

"That's unfortunate. The lack of context I mean. Insult or not, I ain't got a daddy or mommy, just a grumpy old shitbag who might have kicked the bucket by now, I hope, but who knows?" Mosey said then looked at Kenser on the floor.

"Hey bartender, you good?" He asked and she looked at him.

She nodded, a pained grimace on her face as she sat on the floor and removed the tiny pieces of glass from her cuts.

"Since you speak the bastard's tongue, tell him he has five seconds to get his man-loving fingers off Centshuu's jacket before I make his pleasurable night turn into one of pain and regret. Alright, do it" Mosey instructed

Kenser winced from the intense stinging pain she felt as she removed the last piece of glass from her wounds then she felt relief a second later when the burn from the alcohol subsided.

With that taken care of, Kenser, who normally wouldn't have relayed the entirety of Mosey's message because she wanted peace, looked at Vox and relayed everything.

After all, the one she wanted to protect was Avery so why not have the two beefy men beat each other up?

Vox looked at the short and burly man whose feet could barely touch the floor from the chair he was sitting on. He looked at Kove who seemed very mild-mannered and gentle— in other words, looked like a pushover. He looked at Shieve who fearfully threw his face away and acted like he didn't know his two friends and then he looked at an enraged Avery in his grasp and he laughed.

After a few seconds of laughing, Vox became serious and gave Avery another, but more powerful, slap.

Again, another memory flashed in Avery's head. This time it was of him hitting a human-sized bag, so hard that it swung back and then hit him back when he wasn't paying attention.

Avery was confused about what the memories were. They lacked important information like where or when they happened as both were just a very limited perimeter around him while the rest was darkness.

Vox chucked Avery at Mosey and Kove, both who weren't expecting the sudden attack. The force of the collision made them hit their backs against the counter after they managed to catch Avery.

That impact gave Avery yet another flash of locked memories.

In this one, he had his back against something solid but padded. He was panting, with bruises, blood, and sweat all over his face and his arms were on what seemed like ropes.

/"I've had it with all these punks and losers. This is what I and my boys get for being one of the Velvet Serpent's charitable guests, huh? After weeks of hunting and selling those fucking animal parts for the boss, we decide to come here to celebrate as tradition and this is what we get? Insults and alcohol poured on us"\ Vox said exasperatedly, his face palmed as he tapped his left foot in the alcohol, causing tiny splashes.

His actions had drawn attention from other people in the area and one of the service girls came over to find out what was happening.

Vox saw her through an opening in his fingers and while Mosey and Kove were recovering from the attack and also checking if Avery was okay, Vox grabbed the service girl's arm and pulled her to his side.

/"Huh?!"\ She said, shocked.

With a frown, Vox said /"Hephsi, you speak it right?"\

/"Oh, Umm, yes Sir"\ she replied, looking confused.

/"Good to hear that these three monkeys are the only ones who don't know how to speak the King's tongue. Anyway, what's your name?"\ Vox asked.

/"Makieth, sir"\ Makieth replied nervously.

Vox observed her from top to bottom and saw that she was quite pleasing to the eyes.
