Chapter 25 - Hunters

Witnessing the kindness of both men, Jessie felt much calmer, and her walking pace slowed down as she supported Chris, who also started feeling better.

The only problem was that Chris's right foot was bleeding profusely, and his pants were completely soaked in blood. Anton looked at the injured man, whose face was pale, and it seemed that the wound was inflicted by a trap. However, he was suffering the consequences of excessive blood loss.

"I'm called Anton, so as a precaution, we should treat the wound on your leg first; otherwise, you might die from blood loss," Anton said, examining Chris, who still had a lot of adrenaline running through his body.

"Is he in such bad condition?" Jessie worried about Chris and asked directly.

"The situation with your friend is much more dangerous than it appears," Anton said, helping both of them get into the car.

"I'm Chris, but I'm not that bad," Chris said, maintaining a forced smile.

Rafael got into the back seat, holding a first aid kit, and without saying a word, he immediately began treating the wound on Chris's leg. Still outside, Anton closed the back door and asked the girl, "What's your name?"

"Jessie."

Anton nodded and signaled for her to get into the front passenger seat. He walked towards the driver's seat and asked, "How many are following you?"

"I don't know; there were three, as far as we know. We were on a trip with my friends, and suddenly the car's tires exploded due to spikes on the road. We thought it was a coincidence, but then we found out it was intentional," Jessie said, tears welling up as she recalled the recent events.

Anton closed his eyes slightly. It was obvious that, upon hearing these words, he imagined that the culprits behind these murders were hunters. Three men are hunting people instead of deer, and they might be responsible for the deaths a few kilometers away.

Looking towards the back seats, Anton saw Rafael taking care of Chris's wound. Chris seemed much more relaxed now and began feeling the real pain from his leg injury.

"They've dared too much, but both of you are safe now," Anton assured them.

Jessie nodded, looking at Chris's wound, feeling worse knowing that he had been trying to protect her all this time.

"Will he get better?" Rafael, with experience in treating wounds, quickly took care of stopping the bleeding, disinfecting the wound, stitching it, and finally bandaging it.

Anton didn't want to drive off until Rafael fully treated Chris, who seemed to be in worse condition than Jessie. So he waited patiently while Rafael finished.

Rafael, who was handling the wound, said, "You were lucky that you didn't hit an artery. You endured quite a bit, especially considering you could still move with this pain."

"Well, all we could do the whole time was run," Chris said with an optimistic expression, not wanting to think about anything else but surviving.

After Rafael finished the disinfection and started bandaging, he looked at Jessie, who was beginning to calm down, and asked, "How did you manage to escape?"

Considering all the current circumstances, it made sense that if no one helped them, these two people would probably die in worse circumstances.

Upon hearing this, Jessie, who had calmed down, looked around and murmured, "We were three before; Chris was the one who drew the attention of those bastards, and we managed to escape. But after regrouping, they found us again."

Anton now didn't want to ask more questions. Before asking further questions, he took out his cell phone and made a call. "Anton speaking. We found the possible culprits in the case I'm currently investigating."

"Understood, the lightkeepers will be at your location at a determined time. Can you tell what kind of danger you're facing?"

Anton responded while looking at both survivors, "Human, it doesn't seem like anything otherworldly is involved in this matter, but the number of victims is significant."

Ultimately, it's best to let the police handle matters that have nothing to do with him. Jessie was a bit confused hearing this. She didn't understand why Anton was speaking in Latin and only knew this language because she had watched movies about priests.

After hanging up the call, Anton prepared to leave. However, before he could step on the accelerator, a sudden change occurred, and a strong wind sounded from afar.

Anton, with his senses sharp, shouted, "Everyone, lower your heads!"

Crack!

At that moment, an arrow pierced through the car's window, but the force wasn't enough, and it stopped after penetrating a bit.

Jessie trembled in fear at the sight of the arrow, realizing that if it hadn't stopped in time, she might have died.

"What did I tell you about better armoring the car?" Anton asked, extending his hand for Jessie, who was frozen, to lower her head.

It seems that those deranged killers caught up with them.

"Get ready, Rafael, shoot to kill!"

These deranged killers exceeded his expectations. He never thought they would dare to shoot, and he was calm because this truck, at least, had level three armored windows. It wasn't the best, but it was very effective, and it wasn't possible for a human to have the strength to penetrate it with an arrow.

However, before Anton could step on the accelerator, another sound of a fast wind echoed in his ears.

Boom!

This time, they didn't attack the car window but directly targeted the tires.

"They're not normal..."

There were other attacks on different tires, but they all came from one direction. So, without feeling the slightest fear, he extended his hand and took his rifle.

As expected, the archer—no, the killer—didn't want to let them go at all.

Boom!

Jessie was trembling in fear, and the trauma these people had suffered from these hunters was overwhelming.

"Pass me the backpack under the seat," Anton said, preparing to get out.

"Tell me, and remember before answering, how many killers are there?"

Upon hearing this question, Jessie remembered the attacks they had suffered so far and said, "There are three; they should be three."

"Two..." Looking at the arrows that penetrated the glass, Anton felt that it was still a bit unsafe to trust those words. So, taking the backpack Jessie handed him, he took out a box of bullets.

Rafael took the shotgun and said, "We can handle it."

"Maybe there are four; it would be prudent to consider that there are at least five," Anton said, inserting a bullet into the rifle and reloading it.

The ammunition Anton was using at the moment was real, so it would be lethal for anyone shot with such caliber.

"All right, I also love hunting..."
